Notes: We report continuous-wave (cw), quasi-cw and Q-switched laser oscillation of Yb3+,Tm3+-doped YLiF4 at 1.5 and 2.3 μm. Maximum cw output powers of 300 mW at 1.5 μm and 450 mW at 2.3 μm have been obtained. Quasi-cw excitation revealed 20 mJ pulses at 1.5 μm. The cw pumped 1.5 μm laser was passively Q-switched using a U:CaF2 crystal as saturable absorber with a repetition rate of 65 kHz and a pulsewidth of 800 ns. An average output power of 19 mW was achieved. The dynamics of the system was simulated using a rate equation model. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We report efficient room-temperature continuous-wave intracavity frequency doubling of an upconversion-pumped Er(1%):YLiF4 laser at 850 nm. A titanium–sapphire laser was used for excitation of the 4S3/2→4I13/2 transition in erbium. The maximum laser output power at 850 nm was 1200 mW. Intracavity frequency doubling the fundamental wave utilizing lithium triborate as nonlinear crystal yielded a maximum second-harmonic output power of 540 mW at 425 nm. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The β-amyloid precursor protein (β-APP) has been hypothesized to play an important role in the establishment of synaptic connections. Icv injections of anti-βAPP antibodies into rat brains produced no appreciable effect on subsequent learning of a passive avoidance task whereas memory assessed 1 day later in a retention test was impaired in anti-β-APP– but not control-IgG–injected animals. This suggests a possible involvement of β-APPs in cognitive functions. In order to evaluate the properties of the proteolytic Aβ-fragment accumulating in Alzheimer's disease brains, four different neuronal cell types were exposed to Aβ1–42 for 24 hours. All cells degenerated in response to Aβ, yet chromosomal condensation and internucleosomal DNA fragmentation, typical for apoptosis, occurred in only three of the cell types tested. These findings suggest that β-APPs may play an important role in cognitive processes and additionally, that their alternative proteolytic product Aβ may be differentially toxic to neuronal cell types, inducing cell death either by necrosis or by apoptosis.

Notes: Abstract: The adsorption of a single ideal polymer chain on energetically heterogeneous and rough surfaces is investigated using a variational procedure introduced by Garel and Orland (Phys. Rev. B 55, 226 (1997)). The mean polymer size is calculated perpendicular and parallel to the surface and is compared to the Gaussian conformation and to the results for polymers at flat and energetically homogeneous surfaces. The disorder-induced enhancement of adsorption is confirmed and is shown to be much more significant for a heterogeneous interaction strength than for spatial roughness. This difference also applies to the localization transition, where the polymer size becomes independent of the chain length. The localization criterion can be quantified, depending on an effective interaction strength and the length of the polymer chain.

Notes: Abstract Detailed spectra of the excited-state absorption and the stimulated-emission cross-sections of Er3+ -doped Y3Al5O12, YAlO3, LiYF4, and KYF4 crystals are analyzed in the infrared wavelength regions from 700 to 2100 nm. The spectra were measured with a pump and probe technique employing a double modulation scheme. For Er (2%): Y3Al5O12 also the stimulated emission at 3 µm and the reabsorption due to excited-state absorption from the lower laser level are investigated.

Notes: 4 F3/2 excited state of the Nd3+ ion in Y3Al5O12, YAlO3, and Y2O3 were measured in a continuous wave pump- and probe experiment in a wide spectral range from 850 nm (780 nm for Y3Al5O12) to 1500 nm. The cross sections were determined from a comparison with the emission spectra and the simultaneously measured ground state absorption bleaching. The strongest excited state absorption transitions were found in the 1220–1400 nm spectral region due to transitions to the 2G9/2 and 4G7/2 levels. The spectral positions of the measured transitions are in good agreement with the theoretically expected transitions calculated from the known Stark-level splittings.

Notes: Abstract The spectroscopic properties of the new potential laser material Cr4+:LiAlO2 are presented. LiAlO2 exhibits tetrahedrally coordinated lattice sites only. Doping the crystal with chromium only as well as additional codoping with magnesium yields the incorporation of Cr4+ on the Al site. The Cr4+ emission extends from 1.1 to 1.7µm. In the case of doping just with chromium, the lifetime is single exponential in the whole temperature range between 12 and 550 K with a room-temperature lifetime of 29µs and a low-temperature lifetime of 95µs, which are the longest lifetimes observed until now for Cr4+ systems. Codoping with magnesium yields an additional Cr4+ center, which is clearly observed both in the decay dynamics and in the low-temperature emission spectrum.

Notes: 3+ ions in CaWO4, LaSc3(BO3)4, and YLiF4 crystals are presented. The spectra were measured by a continuous-wave pump and probe technique. It is shown that ESA is a negligible loss mechanism in cw lasers emitting at 1.06 μm. In contrast, the effective emission cross sections in Nd:CaWO4 and Nd:LaSc3(BO3)4 around 1.35 μm are considerably diminished.

Notes: Abstract. Second-harmonic generation was z-cut observed Gd1-xYxCa4O(BO3)3 (Gd1-xYxCOB) and the dependence of the phase-matching wavelength on the mixing ratio x has been investigated. The dependence on both temperature and angle tuning was examined as well. We found the suitable composition for noncritical frequency doubling at 930 nm, which is the lasing wavelength of Nd:YAlO3 on the 4F3/2?4I9/2 transition.
