    Notes: Abstract Hydrocarbons, native sulfur, Mississippi Valley-type (MVT) deposits, and sulfuric acid karst in the Delaware Basin, southeastern New Mexico, and west Texas, USA, are all genetically related through a series of sulfur redox reactions. The relationship began with hydrocarbons in the basin that reacted with sulfate ions from evaporite rock to produce isotopically light (δ 34S = -22 to -12) H2S and bioepigenetic limestone (castiles). This light H2S was then oxidized at the redox interface to produce economic native sulfur deposits (δ 34S = -15 to +9) in the castiles, paleokarst, and along graben-boundary faults. This isotopically light H2S also migrated from the basin into its margins to accumulate in structural (anticlinal) and stratigraphic (Yates siltstone) traps, where it formed MVT deposits within the zone of reduction (δ 34S = -15 to +7). Later in time, in th zone of oxidation, this H2S reacted with oxygenated water to produce sulfuric acid, which dissolved the caves (e.g., Carlsbad Cavern and Lechuguilla Cave, Guadalupe Mountains). Massive gypsum blocks on the floors of the caves (δ 34S = -25 to +4) were formed as a result of this reaction. The H2S also produced istopically light cave sulfur (δ 34S = -24 to -15), which is now slowly oxidizing to gypsum in the presence of vadose drip water.

    Notes: Abstract Calcite/opal deposits (COD) at Yucca Mountain were studied with respect to their regional and field geology, petrology and petrography, chemistry and isotopic geochemistry, and fluid inclusions. They were also compared with true pedogenic deposits (TPD), groundwater spring deposits (GSD), and calcite vein deposits (CVD) in the subsurface. Some of the data are equivocal and can support either a hypogene or pedogenic origin for these deposits. However, Sr-, C-, and O-isotope, fluid inclusion, and other data favor a hypogene interpretation. A hypothesis that may account for all currently available data is that the COD precipitated from warm, CO2-rich water that episodically upwelled along faults during the Pleistocene, and which, upon reaching the surface, flowed downslope within existing alluvial, colluvial, eluvial, or soil deposits. Being formed near, or on, the topographic surface, the COD acquired characteristics of pedogenic deposits. This subject relates to the suitability of Yucca Mountain as a high-level nuclear waste site.

    Notes: Abstract Type 3 laryngotracheo-oesophageal clefts are rare congenital anomalies with a high mortality. In the past, transport of such infants to tertiary centres for surgical correction has proved extremely difficult, with the child's ventilatory status often deteriorating to such an extent that ultimate surgical intervention has not proved possible. We describe two cases of successful inter-hospital transfer of infants with type 3 laryngotracheo-oesophageal clefts using the laryngeal mask airway.

It remains to be proven whether thin-section white-CSF volume sequences or gadolinium-enhanced volume studies can replace CT myelography.

    Notes: Abstract The kingdom Chromista contains eukaryotic organisms with tubular mastigonemes on the leading flagellum of their bi-flagellated stages, and plastids within a chloroplast endoplasmic reticulum (CER). The complex series of events leading to the formation of the CER is hypothesized to have occurred only once. Thus, all organisms with plastid-CER connections are believed to be monophyletic and derived from a single secondary endosymbiotic event. Analyses of sequence data from the 16s rRNA gene from three of the four Chromista pigmented classes indicate that these algae are not monophyletic. The validity of the kingdom Chromista and the number of secondary plastid endosymbioses are questioned.

    Notes: Abstract The single channel and whole-cell properties of an inward, rectifying potassium current in cultured embryonic chick hepatocytes were studied at 20°C. In cell-attached patches, channels open upon membrane hyperpolarization and are present in about 90% of cellattached patches. With 145 mm potassium in the pipette, inward current has a slope conductance of 80 pS. The conductance is not a linear function of the external potassium concentration. Current saturates at high external potassium and has a Michaelis-Menten affinity constant of 275 mm potassium. Substitution of gluconate for chloride in the external solution has no significant effect on conductance, and the reversal potential shifts approximately 18 mV with a change in external potassium from 72.5 to 145 mm indicating potassium selectivity. Channel openings are characterized by multiple brief closures during a burst. The channel is inhibited by external cesium in a concentration-dependent manner. Block is characterized by an increased frequency of transient closures. Whole-cell dialysis with 145 mm CsCl of cells bathed in 145 mm KCl reveals time-independent inward currents that reverse at 0 mV in response to 200 msecvoltage steps. Although voltage ramps evoke currents that are 75% potassium dependent and cesium sensitive, the mean chord conductance (425 pS) indicates that less than five channels are open at any instant. We suggest that the inwardly rectifying potassium channel is partially inactivated in the dialysed hepatocyte.
