Notes: This paper reports an automatic instrument developed for characterization of optical waveguides. A specially designed waveguide excitation unit offers a flexible platform for measurement of optical waveguide characteristics like number of propagating modes, mode field intensity distribution, the refractive index profiles, waveguide geometry, attenuation, and dispersion. Further, the availability of attachments like filters, polarizers, chopper, intensity profiler, and CCD camera make the instrument flexible enough for a variety of other experiments also. The instrument is PC controlled and assisted by user friendly menu-driven software. A large number of waveguides have been analyzed using the setup. These results are also presented in the paper. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The corrosion behaviour of an indigenous cast alloy of Ag-Sn-Cu, developed for crown and bridge prostheses, was studied in artificial saliva, with and without the addition of 0·1 m lactic acid, using a potentiostatic technique, and compared with that of the standard cast alloy of Ag-Pd (Ney 76). The values of different parameters such as corrosion potential and corrosion current density were determined for the indigenous alloy of Ag-Sn-Cu and the Ag-Pd alloy. The rate of corrosion of the indigenous alloy was found to be relatively higher than that of the Ag-Pd alloy up to an applied potential of + 400 mV. However, while the indigenous alloy showed a distinct tendency for passivation below + 200 mV at the current level of 0·5 mA/cm2 in the artificial saliva (pH 5·7) at 37 °C, no such tendency for passivation was shown by the Ag-Pd alloy even up to + 400 mV. The tendency for passivation by the indigenous Ag-Sn-Cu alloy, however, was not shown in the artificial saliva in the presence of 0·1 m lactic acid (pH. 2·7) at 37 °C. Minor variation was observed in the corrosion behaviour of the indigenous Ag-Sn-Cu alloys of different grades prepared by alloying elements of varying purity.

Notes: A. virus causing mosaic and leaf deformation of Physalis minima has been identified as an isolate of cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) on the basis of its transmission by aphids in a non-persistent manner, polyhedral particles of 29 nm diameter, molecular weight of coat protein subunits us 24-5 kDa. serological relationship with a CMV isolate and a tripartite single-stranded RNA genome with a subgenomic RNA4- Furthermore. cDNA representing coat protein gene was synthesized and cloned. Complete nucleotide sequences (890 nt) were obtained which showed a coat protein gene open reading frame of 657 residues. THE nucleotide sequences provided the 218 amino ACID sequences of the coat protein. Nucleotide as well as amino acid sequences revealed more than 90% identity with the CMV subgroup I strains.

Notes: The numerical evaluation of certain integral transforms is required for the interpretation of some geophysical exploration data. Digital linear filter operators are widely used for carrying out such numerical integration. It is known that the method of Wiener–Hopf minimization of the error can be used to design very efficient, short digital linear filter operators for this purpose. We have found that, with appropriate modifications, this method can also be used to design longer filters. Two filters for the Hankel J0 transform (61-point and 120-point operators), and two for the Hankel J1 transform (47-point and 140-point operators) have been designed. For these transforms, the new filters give much lower errors compared to all other known filters of comparable, or somewhat longer, size. The new filter operators and some results of comparative performance tests with known integral transforms are presented. These filters would find widespread application in many numerical evaluation problems in geophysics.

Notes: The transformations of phyllosilicates and the changes in potassium (K) balances caused by long-term cropping have been examined in soil from the 153-year-old Broadbalk experiment. Samples taken between 1856 and 1987 and kept in archive were fractionated for particle size and analysed for changes in mineralogy by X-ray diffraction and changes in total K of the coarser and fine fractions. These were compared with K balances made from records of cropping and fertilizer application. No change in mica due to cropping and K-depletion could be detected. Deep ploughing after 1925 mixed chlorite from the subsoil into the surface soil, but this had weathered by 1987. Potassium balances did not agree with measured changes in total K presumably because of unquantified uptake of K from the subsoil and poorly quantified K leaching.

Notes: Fungal allergens have been found to be one of the most prevalent aeroallergens in India. Knowledge of shared/unique components among different fungi is necessary for proper diagnosis and treatment of patients allergic to fungi. In the present study, crude extracts (CE) of 11 common fungi (Alternaria alternata, Aspergillus flavus, Asp. fumigatus, Asp. niger, Asp. tamarii, Asp. versicolor, Cladosporium herbarum, Curvularia lunata, Mucor hiemalis, Penicillium citrinum, and Fusarium solani) were characterized by isoelectric focusing (IEF), SDS-PAGE, and immunoblot. On IEF (pI 3–9), the number of protein bands was found to be greatest (46) in M. hiemalis extract. SDS-PAGE exhibited a varied number of bands, generally 18–40, with mol. mass ranging from 14 to 100 kDa. IgG-specific immunoprint using rabbit anti-F. solani CF antibodies demonstrated a mol. mass distribution of shared antigenic proteins of 14–100 kDa in most of the fungi. Shared allergenicity was observed in a number of allergenic proteins in fungal extracts with mol. mass ranging between 14 and 70 kDa on IgE-specific immunoblot using pooled sera of patients allergic to Fusarium. A 45-kDa protein was found to be common among these fungi on immunoblot with patients as well as with rabbit antibodies. F. solani CF extract contained more antigenic/allergenic proteins than F. solani CE. It was concluded that F. solani CF shared several antigenic/allergenic components with CE of other common fungi. This fact needs to be taken into account when fungal extracts are used in diagnosis and immunotherapy of allergic patients.

Notes: Abstract  The influence of lead acetate (50 mg per kg body weight) on the 131iodine (131I) biokinetics (uptake and retention) in rat thyroid and serum levels of triiodothyronine (T3) as well as thyroxine (T4) was evaluated as a function of time and in combination with lithium treatment. The 2-h and 24-h uptake of 131I in the thyroid was stimulated significantly by lead treatment. The 24-h uptake showed a maximum stimulation after 4 months of lead treatment. Lithium supplementation, however, showed the opposite effect by reducing the iodine uptake, whereby the maximum decrease was noticed after 2 months of treatment. Further, simultaneous lead and lithium treatment resulted in an even more pronounced increase of 2-h 131I uptake with a maximum after 3 months. However, the 24-h uptake after 3 months and 4 months of treatment did not differ significantly from the lead treated reference groups. The thyroidal biological half-life of 131I (Tbiol) was found to have clearly increased following the lead/lithium treatment. Interestingly, the combined lead/lithium treatment applied for 4 months caused a further growth of Tbiol, thus reflecting an increased retention of 131I. A maximum increase of Tbiol was seen after 2 months of combined treatment. A progressive decline of the circulating T3 and T4 levels following lead or lithium treatment was noticed and was more pronounced after combined treatment.

Notes: Abstract Microrhizomes of Zingiber officinale were successfully produced from tissue culture derived shoots by transferring them to liquid MS medium supplemented with 1 mg/l BAP, 2 mg/l calcium pantothenate, 0.2 mg/l GA3 and 0.05 mg/l NAA for shoot proliferation. After 4 weeks of incubation, the medium was replaced with microrhizome induction medium, consisting of MS salts supplemented with 8 mg/l BAP and 75 g/l sucrose. Microrhizome formation started after 20 d of incubation in stationary cultures at 25+1 ° in the dark. Microrhizomes with 1–4 buds and weighing 73.8 to 459 mg each were harvested after 50–60 d. After storage for 2 months in moist sand at room temperature, 80% of the microrhizomes sprouted producing roots and shoots.

Notes: Abstract The morphogenetic potential of node, internode and leaf explants of Brahmi [Bacopa monniera (L.) Wettst.] was investigated to develop reliable protocols for shoot regeneration and somatic embryogenesis. The explants were excised from shoots raised from axillary buds of nodal explants cultured on Murashige and Skoog (MS) basal medium. Presence of 6-benzylaminopurine (BA) or kinetin influenced the degree of callus formation, from which a large number of shoot buds regenerated. Leaf explants gave the largest number of shoot buds followed by node and internode explants. BA was superior to kinetin; BA at 1.5 – 2.0 mg/l appeared to be optimum for inducing the maximum number of shoot buds. MS + 0.1 mg/l BA + 0.2 mg/l indole-3-acetic acid was the most suitable for shoot elongation. Elongated shoots were rooted on full- or half-strength MS medium with or without 0.5 – 1.0 mg/l indole-3-butyric acid or 0.5 – 1.0 mg/l α-naphthaleneacetic acid. The rooted plants were successfully established in soil. Calli derived from nodal explants cultured on MS medium containing 0.5 mg/l 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), when subcultured on MS medium containing 0.1 or 0.5 mg/l BA or 0.2 mg/l 2,4-D + 0.1 or 0.5 mg/l kinetin, developed somatic embryos. The somatic embryos germinated either on the same media or on MS basal medium, and the resulting plantlets were successfully transplanted to soil.
