Notes: The generalized integral equation for the electric potential governed by a quasi-harmonic equation can be derived via a variational formulation. For surface current distributions it is not always a Fredholm integral equation of the second kind. Numerical solutions of the general heterogeneous problem can be obtained with the “reciprocal averaging technique”, where the solution is obtained a second time after exchange of source and field points.

Notes: A Fredholm integral equation of the first kind with respect to the surface charge density is presented via a weighted residual formulation in the standard isotropic problem. The surface charge densities are numerically obtained by solving the well-known Fredholm integral equation of the second kind, where the new equation can be regarded as a constraint. The accuracy of boundary element solutions is examined in connection with the violation of such a constraint and the “modified reciprocal averaging techniques” are proposed.

Notes: Complete analytical expressions are developed for the first and second derivatives of the Newtonian gravitational potential in arbitrary directions due to the homogeneous revolutional compartment with a polygonal vertical section by applying the Gaussian divergence theorem in the cylindrical coordinate system. Elementary solutions presented can easily be translated into magnetic anomalies caused by a uniformly magnetized body. The divergence approach in the polar coordinate system is also described, and gravity attractions in the radial direction are presented in closed form associated with a homogeneous cap compartment. The explicit solutions are tested against well-known formulae for a cylinder, cone, infinite plate, and sphere.

Notes: We developed a low-temperature growth technique for polycrystalline silicon (poly-Si). When Si is deposited on glass substrates at 450 °C, it crystallizes as thickness increases, but 10-nm-thick layers of Si are mainly amorphous. Use of a ZnS buffer layer with 〈111〉 preferred orientation facilities crystallization of Si during the initial growth stages. The preferred orientation of poly-Si on glass substrates is 〈110〉, while that of poly-Si on the ZnS buffer layer is 〈111〉. This is probably due to local epitaxial growth on polycrystalline ZnS grains with 〈111〉 preferred orientation. Raman spectroscopy showed that the ZnS buffer layer significantly improved the crystallinity of 25-nm-thick Si layers.

Notes: Summary We investigated the breakpoints of thebcr gene in 46 Ph1-positive CML cases by Southern blot analysis ofbcr rearrangement, and in 17 CML cases by a combination of Southern blot analysis and RT-PCR. By Southern blot, the breakpoint was not identified on M-bcr in three CML cases, of which one case showed the P210-typebcr/abl transcript and two cases showed the ALL-type (P190-type)bcr/abl transcript with or without P210 transcript. Later two cases showed unique hematological profiles such as thrombocytosis, mild myelofibrosis, and relative resistance to alkylating agents. Therefore, the present study suggests that expression of the P190-type transcript may affect clinical and hematological findings in CML.

Notes: Summary D-Cysteinolic acid (1) analogues with an S-C-C-N skeleton showed increased platelet anti-aggregant activity in the following order: 2-aminoethanesulfonic acids, thiazolidines, 2-aminoethanethiols and 2-aminoethyl disulfides. Methyl substitutions at the 2-position potentiated the activity. Of these analogues, bis [(R)-2-aminopropyl] disulfide was the most potent inhibitor of platelet aggregation, with about 600-fold the activity of (1).

Notes: Summary The fertilization ratio of mouse ova in vitro decreased when glucose concentration in the medium was lowered. However, the addition of phloretin-2′-β-D-glucose (phloridzin), known as a glucose uptake inhibitor, restored the fertilization ratio back to the control level. The glucose moiety of the phloridzin seemed to be responsible for this effect.

Notes: Summary In order to study the sperm-egg recognition mechanism of the surface of the plasma membrane, zonae were removed from mouse eggs by exposure to acidic conditions. Sperm binding to denuded eggs was then observed in the presence of various sugars. Among several carbohydrates tested, only glucosamine (GlcN) was found to increase the number of sperm bound to eggs while inhibiting sperm-egg fusion. The inhibition was reversible; when denuded eggs were transferred to a GlcN free medium, a high rate of polyspermy was observed.
