Notes: A high-resolution laser spectroscopy system for refractory elements with an argon-ion- sputtering atomic beam source was constructed, and it has been demonstrated that the sputtering method is extremely useful as an atomic beam source for high-resolution laser spectroscopy to measure hyperfine structures and isotope shifts for refractory elements, such as Hf, Ta, and W. This source produced intense neutral atomic beams of more than 1010 atoms/s for these elements, and the yield was easily controlled by adjusting the argon-ion current and the acceleration voltage. Resonance linewidths were 32, 66, and 48 MHz for Hf, Ta, and W, respectively, which are sufficient to measure the hyperfine structures and the isotope shifts in optical transitions. With this system, the signal-to-noise ratio reached more than 106. In addition, the temperature of the sputtered atoms found was rather low compared to the kinetic energy given to the atoms.

Notes: In order to clarify the spawning pattern of Japaneses sardine (Sardinops melanostictus) during the spawning period, changes in ovarian histology, frequency distributions of oocyte diameter and plasma levels of oestradiol-17β (E2) and 17a,20β-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (17a,20β-diOH-P) were examined in female fish captured in the region off Kyushu and Shikoku in Japan. With the development of the ovary, the gonadosomatic index (GSI) increased gradually and the size of oocytes became larger. When the GSI exceeded 13, the translucent hydrated eggs began to dominate and ovulation subsequently occurred. After ovulation, GSI decreased to less than 3. Post-ovulatory follicles were found only in the lower GSI ranges and atretic oocytes were always observed in the ovary. Plasma E2 levels increased along with ovarian development but decreased after completion of yolk accumulation. On the other hand, 17a,20β-diOH-P showed the highest level just before and after ovulation. Ovarian histology and hormonal profiles suggest that the sardine spawns repeatedly during the spawning period. Based on the concentration of 17a,20β-diOH-P, the female Japanese sardine was estimated to ovulate before the middle of the night.

Notes: Summary We describe a case of plasma cell leukemia associated with myelofibrosis. A 60-year-old woman was admitted due to lumbago and monoclonal hypergammaglobulinemia. Peripheral blood showed about 40% of plasma-cell-like cells. A bone marrow aspiration was dry tap. The patient was diagnosed as having plasma cell leukemia with myelofibrosis by bone marrow biopsy. Plasma cell leukemia as well as myelofibrosis improved with combination chemotherapy using vincristine, pirarubicin, and dexamethasone. However, when plasma cell leukemia became resistant to chemotherapies, myelofibrosis also reappeared. This case strongly suggests the pathogenetic relationship between plasma cell leukemia and myelofibrosis.

Notes: Summary The presence of HCMV-infected cells inhibits the killing of mouse tumor cells by adherent PEC in an antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity (ADCC) test system. The effect of HCMV-infected cells on ADCC is mediated by the binding of IgG to the Fc receptors of infected cells.

Notes: Abstract The reaction was studied experimentally at 60 MeV. Angular dependences of the cross sections and the analyzing powers for the quasi-free scattering resembled those for freed-p scattering. The experimental results were compared with a Born approximation calculation on the basis of the three-body scattering theory by Alt, Grassberger, and Sandhas.

Notes: Summary To analyze persistent infection by human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) in vivo, specimens obtained from various sources and autopsied organs were examined for the presence of HCMV DNA, mRNA transcripts and antigens by polymerase chain reaction, in situ hybridization and immunostaining. The HCMV genome was detected in lung, liver, kidney, and blood vessels at an average positive rate of 15%. The highest PCR-positive rate was observed with cervical smears. Subsequent examination of uterus tissues from patients with myoma revealed HCMV transcripts and antigens in glandular epithelial cells, leukocytes, endothelial cells, and others, indicating productive HCMV infection of cervical tissue.

Notes: Summary The chemical modification of powdered beech wood by reaction with cyanuric chloride (2,4,6-trichloro-s-triazine) is discussed in terms of the reaction time and temperature, as well as the concentration of the aqueous sodium hydroxide solutions used in the preparation of alkali-treated wood powders. The influence of the surface structure of wood on the receptivity of alkali-treated wood powders to this reagent is also discussed. The amount of cyanuric chloride taken up by the wood powder treated with the highest concentration of aqueous sodium hydroxide (18% NaOH) is about 0.8 mmol/g. This exceeds the theoretical amount of cyanuric chloride which can be reacted with the primary surface in the void model previously proposed. the extent of cross-linking at longer reaction times is minimal in case of the treatment of wood with 0.8% sodium hydroxide. On the other hand, the hydrolysis of C−Cl bonds of the second and third chlorine on the s-triazine ring and/or the internal cross-linking reactions are accelerated by increases in the concentration of sodium hydroxide. However, these reactions (the hydrolysis of C−Cl bonds and the internal cross-linking) are independent of the change in the structure of wood caused by the mercerizing alkalinity.

Notes: Abstract The tidal current data observed off Hamada on San'in coast have shown the diurnal tidal currents to be larger than the semidiurnal ones by a factor of 5–8, although the ratio (K1+O1)/(M2+S2) for the tidal heights at Hamada is 1.3. Furthermore, the diurnal currents are found to be more remarkable on the shelf slope than on the shelf. We consider such diurnal current features as being due to the vortical mode waves, and show that the broad shelf and steep shelf slope off San'in coast allow 1st-mode interior shelf waves (ISWs) at a diurnal-period. Using a simple shelf model, it is shown that ISWs occur in response to the seaward component of diurnal tidal oscillations on the shelf and their propagation originates from the western entrance of the Tsushima Straits.

Notes: Abstract The possibility that plant growth regulators may relate to a cyclic 3′:5′ adenosine monophosphate (cAMP)-dependent protein kinase through the control of cAMP level in the conidial germination process of Neurospora crassa was examined using a cAPM-dependent protein kinase mutant (cpk mutant) which is thought to be cAMP-independent because of defect in the regulatory subunit of cAMP-dependent protein kinase. IAA, 2,4-D and GA3 promoted conidial germination and elongation of young hyphae in the mutant as well as in the wild-type. The result suggests that the effects of auxin and gibberellin on germination and hyphal elongation are not mediated by cAMP.
