Notes: The small-angle neutron scattering from G. P. zones in aged Al–Mg alloys has been measured by the difference in intensity between the scattering before and after an anneal at 100°C sufficiently long for dissolving the zones. No zones have been found by this method in Al–7% Mg alloys. The scattering by zones found in Al–11.5% Mg alloys has been analysed with the help of a radial pair-correlation function written in the form of a sum of Gaussian distribution functions. Best fitting is obtained with a rather smooth function. The mean size of the zones has been determined: mean diameter of about 70 Å for an alloy aged one year at room temperature, and 110 Å, for an alloy aged the first three months at 40°C and then nine months at room temperature. The corresponding mean distance between the zones is found to be equal to about 130 and 200 Å, respectively. The concentration in Mg of the zones has been found to be of the order of magnitude of 20 to 25%.

Notes: Al–Zn alloys of various concentrations in the final pre-precipitation stage have been studied with X-ray and neutron techniques. Reasonable agreement in absolute integrated intensities and in the characteristic parameters of the scattering pattern has been obtained. By optimizing the resolution in the neutron experiments an ordering parameter and new information on pre-precipitation-size and size distribution could be deduced from the scattering data.

Notes: Residual pectin methylesterase activity (60% of initial activity) was present in cherry fruit stored 12 mo in brine. The specific activity of pectin methylesterase increased during the first 4 mo (195% of initial specific activity) but remained relatively stable thereafter. Methanol concentration increased (+144.5%) indicating that pectic substances underwent continuous demethylation during 12 mo storage. Pectin deesterification was probably of enzymatic origin since notable chemical deesterification occurred only at a pH lower than that found in fruit during storage. Residual pectin methylesterase activity introduces the possibility of improving fruit texture by manipulating physico-chemical conditions prior to blanching and candying.

Notes: Abstract Cross-sections and analyzing powers data obtained by inelastic scattering of 800 MeV polarized protons from severals-d shell nuclei have been analyzed using the Dirac coupled-channel (CC) formalism putting emphasis in the precise determination of higher order deformation in these nuclei. The superiority of the Dirac formalism compared to the classical Schrödinger CC calculations in the analysis of these data was once more clearly established. The higher order deformations obtained through these calculations are compared to those obtained using the classical Schrödinger equation.

Notes: Abstract The final state $$D_s + l + \bar v_l + \cdots $$ occurring inZ 0-decay is analyzed, and backgrounds to the decay chain $$(i) Z^0 \to B_s + \cdots ,(ii) B_s \to D_s + l + \bar v_l + \cdots $$ are estimated. A resonance description is used to model the dominant source of background, and a numerical study yields estimates for the background-to-signal ratio of several per cent as input parameters are varied.

Notes: Abstract The sequential break-up of 156 MeV6Li projectiles colliding with208Pb has been investigated in the very forward angular hemisphere in order to explore the role of the Coulomb and nuclear interaction in inducing projectile break-up processes. The experiments use the Karlsruhe spectrograph “Little John” with a newly developed technique to detect efficiently break-up pairs ofα-particles and deuterons emitted with small relative energies and within a small opening angle. The observed differential cross section for the projectile excitation6Li→6Li* (I=3i +) has been analysed (together with forward elastic scattering) by a coupled channel approach, and various sensitivities to the nuclear potential and other ingredients have been studied. We conclude, that in the angular region below half the grazing angle the excitation is completely due to the Coulomb force. This feature is a basis for an application of the disintegration approach for studies of radiative capture cross section of astrophysical interest.
