    Notes: Abstract T Tauri stars are young stars usually surrounded by dusty disks similar to the one from which we believe our own Solar System formed. Most T Tauri stars exhibit a broad emission or absorption band between 7.5 and 13.5µm which is attributed to silicate grains in the circumstellar environment. We imaged three spatially resolved T Tauri binaries through a set of broadband filters which include the spectral region occupied by the silicate band. Two of these objects (T Tauri and Haro 6–10) are “infrared companion” systems in which one component is optically much fainter but contributes strongly in the infrared. Both infrared companions exhibit a deep silicate absorption which is not present in their primaries, indicating that they suffer very strong local extinction which may be due to an edge-on circumstellar disk or to a dense shell. We also took low resolution spectra of the silicate feature of two unresolved T Tauris to look for narrow features in the silicate band which would indicate the presence of specific minerals such as olivine. We observed GK Tau, for which Cohen and Witteborn (1985) reported a narrow emission feature at 9.7µm, but do not find evidence for this feature, and conclude that it is either time-dependent or an artifact of absorption by telluric ozone.

    Notes: Abstract Recently collected data for radon levels in houses in Devon and Cornwall are compared with geological and geochemical information. The region is underlain by granites intruded into folded sedimentary rocks. The highest incidence of affected houses is on granites. The granites are characterised by moderate uranium concentrations, a deep weathering profile and uranium in mineral phase which is easily weathered. However, while the uranium may be removed, radium, the immediate precursor of radon, can remain in situ. Radon is emanated easily from the host rock, and high values of radon in ground and surface waters and soil gases have been detected. The granite areas are also characterised by high values of uranium in stream sediments and waters. In contrast, other zones of high uranium in stream sediment samples do not necessarily exhibit high house radon concentrations, especially when underlain by relatively impermeable rocks. Permeable ground can give rise to high incidences, of affected houses despite having uranium levels close to the crustal abundance. It is concluded that the most efficient method of identifying zones of high radon potential is the soil gas radon survey.

    Notes: Abstract Knowledge elicitation is accepted as being one of the most problematic areas in the creation of a knowledge-based system. A large amount of research has already concentrated on finding more efficient and effective techniques for eliciting knowledge from an individual expert. However, little attention has been given to the involvement of more than one source of expertise in knowledge-based system development. This paper is based on the authors' practical experience gained when developing a knowledge-based system for the conceptual design of bridges. It shows that the use of more than one expert throughout the knowledge elicitation process can improve both the efficiency of the approach and the quality of the knowledge acquired.

    Notes: Abstract We discuss preliminary results of an 11.7 μm imaging survey of ultracompact H II regions from the Wood and Churchwell radio survey. We find that that the morphologies of ionized gas and warm dust are often significantly different, indicating that an H II region classification scheme should be based on more than radio data.

    Notes: Abstract The compounds Fe3−x Mn x Si exhibit a complex magnetic behavior for 0.6⩽x⩽1.75 involving ferromagnetic ordering followed by a reordering at lower temperature. Measurements of the thermal expansion α and the specific heat C p show only a weak anomaly at the Curie temperature, T C, whereas a large, relatively sharp peak occurs at the magnetic reordering temperature, T R. Thermal expansion measurements for the Fe2.2Mn0.8Si compound made about T R are indicative of long-range ordering that can be suppressed in an applied field of ∼0.4T. Magnetization measurements show that low fields, 1–2 mT, strongly influence the bulk magnetization. Irreversible magnetization behavior, similar to that in spin-glass systems, is displayed.
