    Notizen: Abstract Variation of theT c as a function of composition for the C15 materials of the systems Hf−V and Zr−V was investigated. Samples in the as cast and annealed conditions were examined by x-ray and optical metallography. None of the samples was found to be of single phase. For the Hf−V system,T c increases to a constant value of about 9 K for the compositions between 36 and 60 at. %V. A slight increase ofT c between 60 and 70 at. %V and a degradation inT c above 80 at. %V were observed. As cast materials show the maximumT c value of 9.4 K. Deviations from stoichiometry and heat treatments produce considerable changes in the microstructures but have little effect onT c . A slight enhancement ofT c for the alloy containing 80 at. %V is explained by the pressure on V2Hf due to V phase by the differential thermal contraction. For the Zr−V system, maximumT c value of 8–6 K was observed for alloys having 20–66 at. %V in as cast condition. Heat treatments cause the lowering ofT c . Results indicate that the preparation of ZrV2 superconducting material will need more careful control than would be necessary for HfV2.

    Notizen: Abstract The compounds Fe3−x Mn x Si exhibit a complex magnetic behavior for 0.6⩽x⩽1.75 involving ferromagnetic ordering followed by a reordering at lower temperature. Measurements of the thermal expansion α and the specific heat C p show only a weak anomaly at the Curie temperature, T C, whereas a large, relatively sharp peak occurs at the magnetic reordering temperature, T R. Thermal expansion measurements for the Fe2.2Mn0.8Si compound made about T R are indicative of long-range ordering that can be suppressed in an applied field of ∼0.4T. Magnetization measurements show that low fields, 1–2 mT, strongly influence the bulk magnetization. Irreversible magnetization behavior, similar to that in spin-glass systems, is displayed.

    Notizen: Abstract Micro-Raman spectra were collected from an MS (maximum strength) grade Mg–PSZ sample. Both the Mg–PSZ sample and the laser polarization were rotated and the resulting spectra examined. Quantitative analyses of these spectra showed significant variation arising from the effect of grain orientation with respect to the laser polarization direction. The minimum collection volume necessary for reproducible spectra was assessed.

    Notizen: Abstract A study of the low-field critical current densities (computed from magnetization data) which can be achieved by heat-treating for 1 h Nb-Zr alloys deformed various amounts, has shown that a peak critical current density is always reached after annealing at around 750°C. The magnitude of this peak depends upon the amount of deformation, but is not increased by deforming beyond 80%. Superconducting transition temperatures are also reported. The microstructure was unusual in that deformation was very unevenly distributed and there was little tendency for the dislocations to cross-slip or to form a cellular structure. Precipitation ofΒ Zr occurred in regions of high deformation only, so that equilibrium was not achieved below 80% deformation. The measured superconducting properties are explained in terms of this microstructure, withΒ Zr as the dominant flux pinning agent.
