Notes: Binary blends of a lamellar poly(styrene-b-isoprene) diblock copolymer and homopolystyrenes of various molecular weights self-assembled into highly ordered morphologies upon solvent evaporation. The equilibrium blend morphologies were studied by transmission electron microscopy and small angle x-ray scattering. The type of ordered morphology (lamellae, the ordered bicontinuous double diamond morphology, cylinders on a hexagonal lattice, and spheres on a cubic lattice) observed in each blend was generally dictated by the overall polystyrene volume fraction in the blend, i.e., the homopolymer concentration. The blend morphology also depended on the homopolymer molecular weight at a single fixed composition. The intermaterial dividing surface between the polystyrene and the polyisoprene microdomains was characterized by the interfacial mean curvature (H) and the average area per copolymer junction (σj). H and σj increased as the homopolymer concentration increased and/or as the homopolymer molecular weight decreased. These trends were generally obeyed both between and within ordered morphology types. The size of the microdomains was readily controlled by the homopolymer molecular weight.

Notes: The development of an electrostatic energy analyzer to be used with the 2-MeV heavy ion beam probe on the TEXT-Upgrade tokamak has presented several very interesting voltage breakdown phenomena. In order to maintain a 400-kV potential on large surface area plates (46.2 cm×152 cm) various configurations of support dielectrics, voltage feedthrough, plate materials, and plate geometry have been evaluated. Experimental evaluation of several designs and the resulting modifications leading to a working analyzer will be presented. This work was supported by the U.S. Department of Energy.

Notes: An energy analyzer based on the Proca and Green parallel-plate design is being developed for use with the 2 MeV heavy ion beam probe on TEXT. In a departure from the conventional configuration, guard ring electrodes will not be used. Instead, a shaped top plate will provide for comparable, or improved, uniformity of the analyzer electric field region. To quantify this effect, and to characterize the electrostatic field, numerical solution methods have been utilized. Simulations have included effects of top plate shape, wire screens, vacuum chamber design, and dielectric support structures. The modeling has permitted us to design an analyzer electrode structure that is an integral part of a uniquely shaped vacuum vessel. The design electric field is 20 kV/cm with less than 1% error in uniformity within the parallel plate region. To examine the electric field structure experimentally, a quarter-scale prototype analyzer has been constructed and tested. The electric field characteristics are examined by varying the path of a heavy ion beam through the analyzer and examining the resulting analyzer performance. A simulated vacuum wall can be positioned to examine the effects of different vessel configurations and to determine the sensitivity of the analyzer to this boundary condition. The experimental results show excellent agreement with the numerically predicted fields and confirm the validity of the shaped top plate electrode concept.

Notes: The new heavy ion beam probe diagnostic system on TEXT is presently operational at reduced energy. Thallium and cesium ion beams with energy up to 590 keV have been obtained using a single injection beamline and an energy analyzer that can be operated with low-energy beams only (≤590 keV). At full energy (up to 2 MeV) two injection beamlines and two energy analyzers (presently under construction) will allow access to 90% of the plasma cross section. Stable 2-MeV test beams with currents up to 10 μA have been obtained but not injected into the tokamak. The capacitive liner feedback control system allowed stable operations with ripple less than 100 V. Results of initial operations and preliminary measurements of density fluctuations are presented. This work is supported by the U. S. Department of Energy.

Notes: The effects of magnetic alignment, heat treatment, and substrate interactions on the microstructural development and properties of YBa2Cu3O7−x (Y123) thick films were studied. Aligned films were formed by vacuum filtrating a particulate suspension in a 7 T applied field. These films and nonaligned control films were fired on either platinum (Pt) foil or magnesium oxide (MgO) substrates to various maximum temperatures between 930 and 1040 °C. Optical microscopy revealed large differences in microstructural development between the various films. Aligned Y123 films fired on Pt foil exhibited the best microstructural properties. Via plasma emission spectroscopy and secondary ion mass spectroscopy, approximately 0.1 wt % Pt was found distributed throughout the films fired on platinum, while negligible amounts of Mg were detected in the films fired on MgO substrates. Differential thermal analysis revealed that, in the presence of Pt, the peritectic temperature (1030 °C for pure Y123 in O2) is reduced 70 °C, thereby opening a substantial thermal processing window for partial melt assisted growth of textured Y123. SQUID measurements of magnetic hysteresis and Tc provided quantitative evidence that, relative to the films fired on MgO, those fired on Pt exhibited enhanced texture development [ΔM(Happ(parallel)c axis)/ΔM(Happ⊥c axis)=2.6 at 5 K, 1 T] and properties (Bean model Jc,m=5×104 A/cm2 at 5 K, 4 T) without degradation of the Tc characteristics.

Notes: We have examined static properties of step and continuously graded single and multiple quantum well InGaAs/InP lasers grown by atmospheric pressure metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy. Systematic changes in the band gap of InGaAsP waveguide layers have resulted in lasers with low threshold current (〈10 mA), high quantum efficiency (26% per facet) and power output (∼70 mW), and the effective loss of 2–5 cm−1. We show that the changes in threshold current in short lasers can be explained by a switch from the n=1 to n=2 level. The level switching results in a very flat and wide (〉1000 A(ring)) gain profile.

Notes: A magnetic microrheometer has been built, which can be used to study the rheological properties of materials that are available in small volumes and have distinct phases. The instrument performs creep tests (displacement in response to an imposed force), using magnetic microspheres of diameter 7 μm and larger. Displacement histories of the spheres are video-recorded and analyzed, with high resolution, using computer vision methods. In this article, results are presented for the magnetic force calibration and for a test using a Newtonian fluid to evaluate the performance of the instrument. A comprehensive analysis of the different sources of error in measuring Newtonian fluid viscosities was performed, resulting in quantitative delineation of the accuracy and precision of the microrheometer.
