Notes: The genes coding for the binding-protein-dependent lactose transport system and β-galactosidase in Agrobacterium radiobacter strain AR50 were cloned and partially sequenced. A novel lac operon was identified which contains genes coding for a lactose-binding protein (lacE), two integral membrane proteins (lacF and lacG), an ATP-binding protein (lacK) and β-galactosidase (lacZ). The operon is transcribed in the order lacEFGZK, The operon is controlled by an upstream regulatory region containing putative -35 and -10 promoter sites, an operator site, a CRP-binding site probably mediating catabolite repression by glucose and galactose, and a regulatory gene (lacl) encoding a repressor protein which mediates induction by lactose and other galactosides in wild-type A. radiobacter (but not in strain AR50, thus allowing constitutive expression of the lac operon). The derived amino acid sequences of the gene products indicate marked similarities with other binding-protein-dependent transport systems in bacteria.

Notes: A simple rapid method for determining total coliforms and Escherichia coli in drinking water was evaluated in a preliminary pilot-scale study at three independent laboratories by comparison with the standard membrane filtration technique. No significant difference was found between the two methods. The method is based on defined substrate technology. It gives confirmed results within 24 h and requires only limited equipment. It was considered particularly suitable for weekend and emergency use and for on-site testing at remote sampling points.

Notes: Among the works of Aelius Aristides is preserved one entitled the Rhodian ('Pοδιακ⋯ς, sc. λ⋯γος, no. 25) It concerns an earthquake which has recently struck the city of Rhodes, and since Keil's edition of 1898 it has usually been considered spurious. The work reproduces a true speech, not something like an open letter: the clearest sign is when the author uses the deictic pronoun τοετ⋯, ‘this here’, of the place in which he is speaking (53). One question is best discussed at the outset, since later it will prove vital to the question of authenticity: does the speaker claim to have been in Rhodes at the moment of the earthquake? Keil assumed without argument that he does. He had clearly visited the city before the disaster as well as after it (4, 32), but despite the vividness of his descriptions he nowhere says that he was present, and this reticence surely implies that he was not; and if he had been it is odd that he should talk of ‘the actual climax of the thing that befell you’ (τ⋯ν ⋯κμ⋯ν αὐτ⋯ν το comflex περιστ⋯ντος πρ⋯γματος, 19), using the second person plural. I infer that the speaker had not been present, but gave the speech several months after the event (εἰςμ⋯νας, 28); in the last part of this paper I will argue that he is Aristides, stopping at Rhodes on his wayback from Egypt to Smyrna in or about 142.

Notes: Abstract A partial mouth experimental gingivitis model was employed to establish the effect of a dentifrice containing 0.2% Triclosan and 0.5% zinc citrate on the development of chronic gingivitis. In addition, changes in the plaque flora associated with the developing gingivitis have been monitored. Following a period of stringent oral hygiene, volunteers were allocated to 1 of 2 treatment groups. A toothshield was constructed to fit 4 posterior mandibular teeth. During the 21-day experimental period test or placebo dentifrice was applied to the experimental teeth via the tooth shield. The toothshield also prevented plaque removal from those teeth during habitual brushing of the remaining dentition. Supragingival plaque was collected at baseline and day 21 for analysis of the total bacterial flora. At the end of the experimental period, plaque and gingivitis had developed in both groups. However, the test group had significantly less plaque and gingivitis than the placebo group. The microbiological data demonstrated that plaque from the test group contained significantly lower numbers of anaerobes compared to plaque from the placebo group. This was considered particularly significant as these bacteria are generally associated with chronic inflammatory periodontal disease. There was also a trend for the numbers of actinomyces to decrease in plaque from the test group but not in the placebo group.

Notes: Commercial scale ceramic microfilters were used in plant tests to determine flux rate and operating parameters for waters from a poultry scalder, a poultry chiller, and brine from a delicatessen products chiller, under commercial conditions. Filtration produced clear permeate from all waters. Microorganism counts were essentially reduced to zero in scalder and chiller water permeates, with BOD reduced by about 70% in scalder water permeate and about 60% in chiller water permeate. Flux rates were in the range of 224-204 L/m2h for scalder water at 54°C and 114-81 L/m2h for chiller water at ambient temperature. Test results were used to project nonlabor operating savings and/or costs resulting from the use of microfiltration to recondition and reuse bath overflow. For a processing rate of 140 birds/min and bath size of 37,850 L (10,000 gal), an annual savings of $21,000-$26,000 were estimated for scalder water filtration, while annual costs of $65,000-$84,000 were estimated for chiller water filtration. For a deli brine bath size of 1,170 L (300 gal), annual costs of about $700 were estimated. Retentate heating and electrical usage associated with centrifugal filter pumps were projected as predominant cost factors. Besides costs, other factors such as nonchemical control of microbial growth, water savings, and reduced discharge levels may also be important reasons for considering microfiltration.

Notes: Abstract Triple pulses are constructed for systems of two coupled reaction-diffusion equations with an asymptotically oscillatory single pulse. In (Alexander and Jones [1993]) it has been shown that an infinite sequence of double pulses can be constructed near the single pulse. Under the condition that the wave speed of a stable double pulse coincides with that of the single pulse, it is shown here that an infinite sequence of triple pulses can be constructed. These pulses have the form of the double pulse concatenated with a further single pulse far behind, and cannot be constructed in the same way for the situations considered by previous authors. Moreover, the pulses are shown to be alternately stable and unstable.

Notes: Abstract Feeding preferences of xylophagous termites have been determined by comparing differences in wood biomass removed, percentage of wood consumed or degree of damage rated in arbitrary categories. When test woods differ in physical characteristics such as density, these measures are not comparable. We examined the response of the Formosan termite, Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae) to wood that differed in physical characteristics by compressing blocks to 40% greater than the natural density. Termites ate significantly greater percentages, but similar amounts of biomass, of uncompressed over compressed natural pine. In contrast, they ate significantly greater amounts of biomass, but similar percentages, of compressed over uncompressed mahogany. Whether percentage or amount of biomass removed should be used as a measure of preference depends on what regulates insect meal size. If termites consume meals of fixed biomass, then biomass consumed is the correct measure; percentage removed is appropriate if they consume meals of fixed volume.

Notes: Abstract Objective: To determine the prevalence and clinical significance of adrenal hemorrhage in infants undergoing ECMO therapy. Methods: Prospective US evaluation of the adrenal glands was performed in 50 consecutive infants undergoing ECMO. The infants were examined at least every other day while on bypass. Adrenal hemorrhage was diagnosed at US examination when a suprarenal mass or adrenal gland enlargement was identified. Results: Adrenal hemorrhage was identified in two infants (4%); one infant with septicemia, and one with primary pulmonary hypertension. Both hemorrhages were unilateral; one was right-sided, and one left-sided. One hemorrhage occurred on the first day following the onset of ECMO and the other on the third day. The adrenal hemorrhage was not associated with an acute drop in hematocrit nor with adrenal insufficiency in either infant. Conclusion: Adrenal hemorrhage is uncommon in infants undergoing ECMO. When hemorrhage did occur in this series, it did not result in clinical complications.
