Notes: Abstract A partial mouth experimental gingivitis model was employed to establish the effect of a dentifrice containing 0.2% Triclosan and 0.5% zinc citrate on the development of chronic gingivitis. In addition, changes in the plaque flora associated with the developing gingivitis have been monitored. Following a period of stringent oral hygiene, volunteers were allocated to 1 of 2 treatment groups. A toothshield was constructed to fit 4 posterior mandibular teeth. During the 21-day experimental period test or placebo dentifrice was applied to the experimental teeth via the tooth shield. The toothshield also prevented plaque removal from those teeth during habitual brushing of the remaining dentition. Supragingival plaque was collected at baseline and day 21 for analysis of the total bacterial flora. At the end of the experimental period, plaque and gingivitis had developed in both groups. However, the test group had significantly less plaque and gingivitis than the placebo group. The microbiological data demonstrated that plaque from the test group contained significantly lower numbers of anaerobes compared to plaque from the placebo group. This was considered particularly significant as these bacteria are generally associated with chronic inflammatory periodontal disease. There was also a trend for the numbers of actinomyces to decrease in plaque from the test group but not in the placebo group.

Notes: Abstract The motion of a two-dimensional bubble which is moving between two parallel plates under the influence of a constant pressure has been investigated using the Boundary Element Method. A free surface location algorithm has been developed so that the profile of the bubble may be predicted over a large range of values of the surface tension. The numerically predicted results are compared with existing experimental data and the results are encouraging.

Notes: Conclusion In conclusion, it may be said that the propulsion of colonic contents can be effected either by systolic or progressive contractions of the bowel wall. The two modes of transportation can usually be identified in time-lapse cinefluorograms even at 1 frame/min from the regularity of the movement of opaque contents. Evidence is presented of a form of progressive propulsion which has all the characteristics of peristalsis that are recognizable by this method of study, and yet is capable of travelling adorally up the colon. It is not possible to say what the relationship of this kind of movement is to the strictly aboral mass peristalsis with which workers in this field are so much more familiar.

Notes: Abstract Three parameters of intraluminal pressure in the human rectum and pelvic colon have been recorded at different distances from the anal margin in the course of 56 observations in 25 normal subjects. These have been compared graphically with measurements taken from 183 observations in patients with the irritable colon syndrome. The 98 patients involved were divided into one group with painless diarrhea, another with spastic colon in whom colonic pain was the chief symptom, and a mixed group with both pain and diarrhea. The pattern of localized motor activity found in patients with painless diarrhea resembled that seen in the normal bowel. There were also similarities between the curves for the group with spastic colon and the group with mixed irritable colon, and these were significantly different from those obtained from normal subjects and patients with painless diarrhea. The findings tend to differentiate a consistently painless diarrhea from the remainder of the irritable colon syndrome.
