Notes: An analytical method to calculate invariants is developed, based on the theory of complete systems of simultaneous linear first order partial differential equations. The application of this algorithm to the general case, in which the invariants are not polynomials is included. For the case of Lie algebras with one invariant the procedure of finding the invariant can be computerized. As an example of this procedure, the algorithm is applied in the calculation of the invariants of the group SA(n,R). The explicit construction of its invariants for n=2, 3, 4 is given. A theorem determining the order of a polynomial invariant of a Lie group is proven allowing us to show that the invariant of SA(n,R) is a homogeneous polynomial of order 1/2n(n+1) in the generators. From this fact an immediate consequence is that the order in the generators of translations is n. The method is also applied in the calculation of invariants of the dimension six solvable Lie algebras, and dimension seven nilpotent.

Notes: An investigation of the seismicity of the area in which the high magnitude earthquakes of 1931 May 20, 1941 November 25 and 1975 May 26 were generated was carried out in 1988 August by the Institute of Oceanology of the Academy of Sciences of USSR in collaboration with the National Institute for Meteorology and Geophysics of Portugal. Five seismographs were installed by the R/V Akademic Kurchatov on the sea bottom in that area for 13 days at depths ranging from 3400 m to 5100 m. A total of 99 earthquakes was registered, the magnitudes ML of the events ranging from -0.5 to 3.0. Most of the epicentres located in this investigation are probably situated along the Azores-Gibraltar fault or along the fault associated with it, trending NW-SE, which is considered to be responsible for the 1975 earthquake. An alignment of epicentres, trending approximately NE-SW, probably connected with a fault, is also proposed.

Notes: Summary From a data set of sea-breeze observations corresponding to cases of no synoptic-scale flow in Barcelona during the period 1970–89, some features of this wind have been deduced. Maximum velocities of between 6–14 m/s generally occur during 12–16 SLT. Diurnal evolution gives a clockwise rotation of sea breeze so that this wind blows roughly parallel to the shoreline in late afternoon. The rate of the change of direction is in agreement with numerical results from a simple nonlinear sea breeze model.

Notes: Abstract The term cast syndrome is used to denote duodenal obstruction occurring after application of a corrective plaster cast to patients with scoliosis. We report a classical case in a 14-year-old female who required surgical intervention after conservative treatment failed. Six months later the patient had no further gastrointestinal symptoms. Clinical, radiological, and pathological details as well as the surgical treatment are described and discussed.

Notes: Summary Purpose To evaluate the effect of Brain Tomour (BT) and Neurosurgery (NS) on the renal handling of H2O and Na, and the clinical importance of SIADH in this setting. Methods Fourteen patients with BT pre-op for NS and 6 controls (C) pre-op for general surgery, were assessed in a controlled prospective trial. All patients were normovolaemic, with normal renal function. They received 400 mg of lithium carbonate (Li) 8 hours before each of two test periods (I and II) and a standard water load only before period II. Clearances studies were performed pre-op (period I) and 24 hours post-op (period II). Results Serum Na was normal at all times. Despite normovolaemia, a 1% decrement in serum osmolality and the water load, ADH dramaticaly increased from time I to II mainly in the BT group (36.2±9.4 vs 7.1±0.6 pmol/L, p=0.02). FENa, FELi and FEUricA were significantly more elevated in the BT group pre and post-op (at time II respectively 4.6±1.6 vs 1.1±0.3%; 29.3±4.9 vs 22.6±5.5; 26.0±8.1 vs 11.3±2.2, p=0.03). Proximal and distal H2O re-absorption and distal fractional Na re-absorption were identical in both groups pre and post-operatively. Conclusions 1-BT and NS always induce a SIADH. 2-There was a primary Na loss at the proximal tubule level not explained by ADH increment, that did not significantly changed H2O handling. 3-To prevent hyponatraemia, hypotonic I.V. fluids should be avoided, but more importantly saline must be provided to this potentially salt-wasting condition.

Notes: Abstract Puncture of a femoral artery for left heart catheterization is considered a relative contraindication for thrombolytic therapy for some days. We treated 9 patients with systemic thrombolysis who had undergone left heart catheterization in the previous hours. Four patients developed a large hematoma, but only 1 required transfusion. We suggest that thrombolytic therapy can be administered soon after left heart catheterization by the femoral approach, provided that continuous care can be taken over the puncture site.

Notes: Abstract Pulmonary lymphoproliferative disorders include plasma cell granuloma, Castleman's disease, pseudolymphoma, lymphocytic interstitial pneumonia, angioimmunoblastic lymphadenopathy and lymphomatoid granulomatosis. We carried out a retrospective study for the purpose of analysing the clinical and radiological findings of 16 cases of pulmonary lymphoproliferative disorders seen during the decade 1980–1990. The cases comprised 8 lymphocytic interstitial pneumonia, 5 lymphomatoid granulomatosis, 2 plasma cell granuloma and 1 angioimmunoblastic lymphadenopathy. Owing to the overlap and low specificity of the radiological patterns in these processes, histopathological examination is required. In view of the frequent evolution of pulmonary lymphoproliferative disorders to malignant lymphoma (4 cases, 1 of lymphocytic interstitial pneumonia and 3 of lymphomatoid granulomatosis, in our series) we provide a description of the radiological changes that occur during this process.

Notes: Summary The antiproteinuric effect of the antiplatelet agent dipyridamole has been assessed after inhibiton of thromboxane B2 (TxB2) synthesis in 8 patients with confirmed membranous glomerulonephritis. There were three study periods, each of 30 days, and 45 days apart, namely a washout period, treatment with dipyridamole 300 mg/d, and dipyridamole 225 mg/d plus aspirin 150 mg/d. On Days 1 and 30 of each study period serum and urine creatinine, 24-h excretion of protein, creatinine clearance, platelet aggregometry on whole blood and serum TxB2 were measured. Treatment with dipyridamole alone or with aspirin produced significant inhibition of platelet aggregation and a fall in 24-h protein excretion; the latter amounted to 54% with dipyridamole alone and 56 % with dipyridamole plus aspirin (NS). Dipyridamole plus aspirin caused an 82 % reduction in serum TxB2.

Notes: Abstract The purpose of this review is to establish the incidence and the clinical and radiological characteristics of the massive lupus-induced pulmonary haemorrhage in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). In 104 cases of SLE, 4 patients were diagnosed with pulmonary haemorrhage and they all fulfilled the following criteria: (1) rapidly progressing bilateral airspace consolidation; (2) a sudden decrease in the haemotocrit with a cough that produced bloody sputum and/or histiocytes with haemosiderin-laden macrophages in sputum or in the material from the bronchoalveorar washing.
