    Notes: A number of different matrices have been tested and compared for ultraviolet and ubfrared (UV and IR) matrix-assisted lasedr desorption/ionization (MALDI) of oligodeoxyribonucleotides and mixtures thereof, as well as ribonucleic acids (tRNA from yeast and rRNA from Ecoli). A new technique for removing alkali cations from nucleic acid samples during sample preparation on the sample support is demonstrated. The amount of oligonucleotide sample consumed during a typical measurement in IR-MALDI-MS was determined.

    Notes: The chimaeroid holocephalian fishes are distinguished among extant chondrichthyans by the possession of three pairs of tooth plates, evergrowing and partially hypermineralized, that are not shed and replaced like the teeth of living elasmobranchs. Although derivation of the chimaeroid tooth plate from the fusion of members of a plesiomorphic chondrichthyan tooth family has been proposed, evidence for this hypothesis has been lacking. A new analysis of the development and structure of the tooth plates in Callorhinchus milii (Holocephali, Chimaeriformes) reveals the compound nature of the tooth plates in a chimaeroid fish. Each tooth plate consists of an oral and aboral territory that form independently in the embryo and maintain separate growth surfaces through life. The descending lamina on the aboral surface of the tooth plate demarcates the growth surface of the aboral territory. Comparison with the tooth plates of Chimaera monstrosa indicates that compound tooth plates may be a feature of all chimaeroids in which a descending lamina is present. The tooth plates in these fishes represent the fusion of two members of a reduced tooth family. The condition of the tooth plates in C. milii is plesiomorphic for chimaeroids and is of evolutionary significance in that it provides further evidence to support a lyodont dentition in chimaeroid fishes similar to that found in other chondrichthyans. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

    Notes: Abstract Fe has been studied in the semiconductors Si and Ge with the Coulomb excitation recoil implantation technique in a wide temperature range. In the case of Fe inSilicon it was found that one third of the implanted atoms land on interstitial sites. The long range diffusion of these atoms could be observed microscopically at temperatures around 600 K. The isomer shift of interstitial Fe in Si was determined. The remaining atoms exhibit a strong quadrupole splitting on disturbed sites. This component seems to relax into a state with higher symmetry above 700 K. InGermanium a similar situation is found. Whereas iron on disturbed sites dominates the spectra, the direct implantation into interstitial sites is also observed below 200 K. At higher temperatures the substitutional position is preferred. The isomer shifts for interstitial and substitutional Fe in Si and in Ge are in good agreement with calculated electron densities.

    Notes: Abstract Depth Selective Conversion Electron Mössbauer (MB) Spectroscopy measurements usually are done in backscattering geometry under bad geometrical conditions due to low resonant count rates. Furthermore in the case of iron these investigations are often done on samples enriched with57Fe, partially polarized. Because of these conditions the spectra are modified more or less strongly by the cosine smearing effect and/or saturation effects due to high enrichment of57Fe. We have investigated these effects in the case of an α-Fe-metal sample using a high transmission orange spectrometer.

    Notes: Abstract This work represents an attempt to assess the relative contribution of the factors limiting productivity ofSpirulina platensis in open raceways throughout the year. Temperature of the culture during daylight exerted the predominant effect on productivity and elevating the temperature resulted in a significant rise in productivity even in summer. Photoinhibition had a decisive role in summer in determining productivity ofSpirulina in open raceways in that growth almost ceased after mid-day. Contamination by other microorganisms, particularlyS. minor andChlorella sp. was estimated to reduce the net biomass yield by at least 15 to 20%, but measures to curtail the establishment of these species in the raceway have been devised. The effect of harvest time during the day on the yield of dry mass was examined: no conclusion could be drawn except in mid-summer, when evening harvesting resulted in a significant increase in the output rate of dry weight over morning harvesting. It was estimated that in a subtropical climate with little cloudiness, it should be readily possible to obtain an annual output rate of dry mass of ca. 60 to 70 t ha−1. Such output, however, which would reduce very substantially the cost of production to-date, is possible only if the optimal temperature forSpirulina can be maintained throughout daylight, photoinhibition essentially controlled, harvesting in summer performed in the evening, and night-loss of dry mass as well as the extent of contamination by other cyanobacteria or microalgae can be kept low. The pronounced daily fluctuations in the output rate at peak productivity in summer suggest that when environmental limitations of growth are minimal, other limitations become dominant. These should be identified to facilitate an even greater increase in the productivity ofSpirulina in outdoor cultures.

    Notes: Abstract Very low energy electrons (LEE) (E e ≤15 eV) are produced with high intensity directly by Mössbauerabsorption and conversion in the case of57Fe [1, 4, 5]. These electrons should be very surface sensitive due to their very low attenuation length compared to the 7.3 keV K-Conversion electrons of57Fe [5, 11]. We have examined the surface sensitivity of these resonant LEE, using nonresonant56Fe metal and56Fe stainless steel foils coated with about 20 Å and 50 Å57Fe, respectively. They were exposed to air after evaporation: The 20 Å samples are found to be fully oxidized [5]. Depth Selective Conversion Electron Mössbauer Spectroscopy (DCEMS), performed with a high transmission orange type magnetic spectrometer [5, 6, 13] reveals a two layer structure of the 50 Å samples. Low Energy Electron Mössbauer Spectroscopy (LEEMS) [5] is found to be significantly more surface sensitive than conventional DCEMS, but not as surface sensitive as Auger Electron Mössbauer Spectroscopy (AEMS) using LMM-Auger electrons of 500–600 eV, as expected due to the different mean free path. But because of the very low intensity of these Auger electrons this mode appears to be not very useful for practical application.
