Notes: Abstract Under microaerophilic conditions Salmonella typhimurium LT2 synthesizes cobalamin, during which 5,6-dimethylbenzimidazole is formed from riboflavin. We report here that in an anoxic environment S. typhimurium did not form cobalamin, but rather adenylcobamide, 2-methyladenylcobamide, and cobyric acid. This indicated that S. typhimurium, like other microorganisms that synthesize 5,6-dimethylbenzimidazole from riboflavin, requires oxygen for the formation of the cobalamin base.

Notes: Abstract T-21 silica, a commonly used encapsulation material in neutron activation analysis of small samples, was analyzed by INAA to determine trace levels of the following impurities: Na, Sc, Cr, Fe, Co, Ni, Zn, Br, Sb, La, Ce, Sm, Tb, Hf and Au. In the unprocessed form supplied by the manufacturer, pieces of T-21 weighing 50 mg contain ∼6·10−2 μg Na; ∼9·10−3 μg Fe; ∼3·10−7–7·10−6 μg light REE, Sc and Hf and ∼4·10−8 μg Tb and Au. In a series of glass-blowing steps, in which unfiltered gases were used for fuel, and cleaning steps, in which reagent grade aqua regia was used, irradiation vials were produced which contain higher average levels of Sc, La, Sm, Tb and Hf, by factors ranging from 1.3 for Sm to 11.5 for La, and lower average levels of Co, Na and Fe, by factors of 1.4, 2.0 and 4.0, respectively, than the unprocessed material. These contamination levels lead to blank corrections of 21% for La, 2.6% for Ce and 3.0% for Hf in 40 μg samples of refractory inclusions from carbonaceous chondrites, if counted in their irradiation vials.

Notes: [Auszug] About 1.5 g of the Allan Hills A77011 meteorite was ground (〈100??) and the magnetic fraction removed. Aliquots weighing 20 mg were then placed in high-purity quartz vials, evacuated to 105 atmospheres, filled to atmospheric pressure with nitrogen and heat sealed. They were then placed in a ...

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Aim of the study: Phlebectasia of the jugular veins is a rare finding. What is their clinical implication? Methods: Retrospective analysis of seven patients (age 3–16 years, 1 female, 6 males) with jugular phlebectasias with a mean follow-up of 4 1/2 years (range 1–11 years). Results: Presentation is usually an impressive jugular swelling, with elastic properties, a non-pulsatile character, and a unilateral localization. Findings in all patients showed marginal progression. No patient had clinical impairment because of the jugular swelling. The most accepted pathology is aneurysm formation in the venous wall. Conclusions: Indication for treatment in childhood is limited to severely symptomatic patients.

Notes: Abstract We describe results from in-beam Mössbauer implantation measurements for57Fe inn-type Si, inp-type Si, and in Ge. Ab initio calculations for the contact densities from density functional theory in the local-density approximation are presented and their results are employed to locate the type of position of Fe in the lattice of the host. Thus the different spectral features corresponding to interstitial and substitutional Fe in Si and Ge are unambiguously identified.

Notes: Abstract The method of In-Beam Mössbauer Spectroscopy combining recoil implantation and Coulomb excitation allows the production of interstitial sites for Fe atoms in metals which display little or vanishing solubility for the Fe atoms in thermal equilibrium. Strongly pronounced dynamical effects for the Fe-interstitial complex are observed: Localized diffusion (cage motion) in several metals and in one case, in Sc, we observe the onset of the anomalously fast diffusion of Fe starting from the interstitial site.

Notes: Abstract Fe has been studied in the semiconductors Si and Ge with the Coulomb excitation recoil implantation technique in a wide temperature range. In the case of Fe inSilicon it was found that one third of the implanted atoms land on interstitial sites. The long range diffusion of these atoms could be observed microscopically at temperatures around 600 K. The isomer shift of interstitial Fe in Si was determined. The remaining atoms exhibit a strong quadrupole splitting on disturbed sites. This component seems to relax into a state with higher symmetry above 700 K. InGermanium a similar situation is found. Whereas iron on disturbed sites dominates the spectra, the direct implantation into interstitial sites is also observed below 200 K. At higher temperatures the substitutional position is preferred. The isomer shifts for interstitial and substitutional Fe in Si and in Ge are in good agreement with calculated electron densities.

Notes: Abstract In-beam Mössbauer spectroscopy is applied to study implanted Fe atoms in the alkali metals Li, Na and K. From the Mössbauer parameters we infer that the Fe implants take up substitutional as well as interstitial sites. The strongly increased electron density at the interstitial position is qualitatively explained by the pressure resulting from the small interstitial volume. It is concluded that recently reported local moment formation in these systems cannot be due to substitutional Fe only.
