    Notes: Summary The distribution of the 72-kDa heat-shock protein (hsp72) in rat brain, 24 h following in vivo transient hyperthermia (41.5°C, 15 min), was studied using immunohistochemistry (n=22). Tissue sections were also stained with hematoxylin and eosin, and with an anti-glial fibrillary acidic protein to evaluate neuronal and astrocytic response to transient hyperthermia, respectively. hsp 72 was observed in glia and endothelial cells throughout brain. hsp 72 was also found in neurons located in the: dentate gyrus, habenula, and hypothalamus, granular layer of the cerebellum and the olfactory area. Our data indicate, that hyperthermia causes neuronal expression of hsp72, particularly in cerebral neuronal populations which control the neuroendocrine stress response.

    Notes: Summary Deficiency of α-d-mannosidase was found in two siblings with muscle weakness and spastic paraplegia. A biopsy of the vastus lateralis muscle was studied by light and electron microscopy. Cryostat sections showed mild fiber size variation but no necrosis. Semithin Epon sections revealed many vacuoles in the muscle cells and fibroblasts. Electron microscopy showed that the vacuoles, presumably lysosomal, had a single limiting membrane and contained finely granular or granulo-reticular material, membranous structures, and electron-dense ovoids. The vacuoles were identical with those in lymphocytes and other cells of patients with mannosidosis. Disorganization of sarcomere alignment and widening of intermyofibrillar spaces were also observed. Deficiency of α-d-mannosidase is considered to cause slowly progressing degeneration of muscle fibers.

    Notes: Summary We evaluated the relationship between the induction of the 72-kDa heat-shock protein (hsp 72) and the presence of necrotic neurons in the rat hippocampus, 48 h after an 8-min episode of forebrain ischemia in eight rates. Hsp 72 was detected using the monoclonal antibody C92 on vibratome brain tissue sections. Hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining on adjacent paraffinembedded sections was used to determine histopathological features. All morphologically intact CA1/2 neurons, 70% of which are destined to become necrotic 7 days after ischemia, exhibited intense hsp 72 staining, while necrotic or damaged neurons were devoid or low in hsp 72. Hsp 72 was also detected in CA3 neurons destined to survive 7 days after ischemia. Blood vessels positive for hsp 72 were detected in focal brain regions, in which severely damaged neurons were either devoid or low in hsp 72 staining. Occasional glial cells expressed hsp 72 in both normal and damaged brain regions. Hsp 72 response to a transient forebrain ischemia seemingly reflects differences in the selective ischemic vulnerability of CA1/2 and CA3 neurons. Further, the presence of hsp 72 within a neuron is likely only a marker of stress and is not necessarily indicative of eventual neuronal survival.

    Notes: Summary Glomeruloid blood vessels (GBVs), a characteristic histological feature of most human malignant gliomas, were recognized with high incidence in autochthonous rat gliomas induced by transplacental administration of ethylnitrosourea. To evaluate some of the biological properties of these GBVs, we carried out a study using histological methods and immunohistochemical staining for glial fibrillary acidic protein, factor VIII-related antigen (VIII Ag) and bromodeoxyuridine (BrdUrd). Of 22 animals with large, massively growing gliomas in the CNS, GBVs including conglomerate aggregations of small blood vessels with endothelial hyperplasia and strong VIII Ag expression were observed in 13 large gliomas histologically consisting of primitive neuroepithelial neoplasms (PNN; so called ependymoma) and mixed-type gliomas in combination with astrocytoma and PNN or anaplastic astrocytoma. The anaplastic gliomas in our series were devoid of GBVs. These findings indicate that GBV formation takes place in a histological variety of experimental gliomas. Furthermore, the GBVs were frequently associated with the vasculo-mesenchymal stroma in the parent gliomas, suggesting an intimate relationship with the morphogenesis of GBVs. In addition, it was shown that the GBVs had a higher BrdUrd-labelling index than that of other blood vessels in gliomas and also that of neoplastic cells in most parent gliomas, except for anaplastic gliomas. Based on these results, the possible mechanism of GBV morphogenesis is discussed with regard to the roles of macromolecules in the induction and regulation of GBVs.

    Notes: Abstract Two rare cases of small intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma with marked hypervascularity are reported. Dynamic computed tomographic and magnetic resonance images of the two cases revealed strong enhancement of the whole tumor on the early phase and prolonged enhancement on the late and delayed phases. In both cases, the tumors turned out to be well-differentiated tubular cholangiocarcinoma that contained a large number of tumor cells and few interstitial fibrous tissues. These results suggest that some intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma should be differentiated from other hypervascular hepatic tumors, especially hepatocelluar carcinoma, and that prolonged enhancement of the tumor on late and delayed phases of dynamic images could be of diagnostic value.

    Notes: Titania layer was fabricated on the titanium substrates with chemical treatment with 20ml or 40ml ofhydrogen peroxide solution and subsequent heat treatment at 400°C, coded as CHT20 and CHT40, respectively.CHT20 spontaneously deposited apatite on the surface in a simulated body fluid (SBF), while CHT40 did not.TF-XRD patterns showed that the diffraction intensity of anatase of CHT20 was higher than that of CHT40. Itwas suggested that the thicker titania layer indicated in vitro apatite forming ability. The cell proliferation ofCHT20 and CHT40 were lower than NT and HT. Since the surface of titania layers became hydrophobic afterautoclaving, we can suppose that the cell proliferation on CHT20 and CHT40 were lower than NT and HT dueto their surface hydrophobicity

    Notes: Summary  This paper presents two patients with chronic progressive hearing disturbance. Each patient had an intrameatal tumour, part of which extended to the cerebellopontine (CP) angle. In both cases, the patients were initially diagnosed with an acoustic neurinoma. A 63-year-old male experienced a hearing disturbance in the left ear for 1.5 years prior to visiting our hospital. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging revealed a mass which was surgically resected. The tumour originated from the intrameatal dura mater. Histologically, the tumour was a meningioma. Similarly, a 53-year-old male presented with systemic lymphoma diagnosed 10 months earlier, and a hearing disturbance in the right ear that began 3 months prior to visiting our hospital. MR imaging prior to chemotherapy revealed a mass which extended to the CP angle. Part of the tumour in the CP angle disappeared after chemotherapy, suggesting a secondary lymphoma. Another tumour appeared later in Meckel's cave on the left side; however, it decreased in size following repeated chemotherapy. The present results indicate that differential diagnosis of intrameatal tumours and acoustic neurinomas may be difficult due to the small tumour size. Recent progress in neuroradiology may allow distinction of intrameatal tumours as a separate tumour classification. Our second patient is the sixth reported case of a CP angle lymphoma in the literature.
