Notes: The complex magneto-optical Kerr rotation spectra of Fe/Cu and FeCo/Cu bilayers and compositionally modulated films (CMF) were studied experimentally and theoretically. In the bilayers, an enhancement of Kerr ellipticity εk by a factor of 5 was observed at long wavelength side, while the Kerr rotation θk can only be enhanced by a factor of 2 around the plasma edge of Cu. In the CMFs, εk was enhanced by 60% but no θk enhancement was observed. Theoretical analyses showed that both the magnitude of effective ε˜xye and the magnitude and signs of effective Ae and Be are important for magneto-optical enhancement.

Notes: Bilayers Nd-Fe/Cu and Nd-Fe/Al made by vacuum evaporation were studied. The magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) and reflectivity spectra were measured. For Nd-Fe/Cu with low Nd content and small thickness of Nd-Fe layer there is a peak in the MOKE spectrum and a broad MOKE enhancement. The position is located near the plasma edge of Cu. When the content of Nd exceeds 37 at. %, there is no Kerr peak in the MOKE spectrum of Nd-Fe/Cu. When the thickness of the magnetic layer is larger but still less than the light penetration depth, the position of the peak moves towards the long-wavelength side. For Nd-Fe/Al there is a broad enhancement in the short-wavelength region, but no Kerr peak occurs no matter how the magnetic layer changes. The results presented show that the necessary conditions for MOKE enhancement in bilayers are suitable values of n and k of the reflector, whether the reflector has a plasma edge or not, and the enhancement also depends on the properties of the magnetic layer.

Notes: Dislocation distribution near the crack tip of I and II modes in bulk aluminum single crystal has been decorated by using the etching pit technique and then was observed by scanning electron microscopy. It has been shown that two kinds of distribution of dislocations, i.e., shielding and antishielding dislocations are found to exist near the crack tip. In addition to these, the dislocation-free zone is still observed to be between the crack tip and the plastic zone. According to Rice and Thomson [Philos. Mag. 29, 73 (1974)], the dislocation mode of the elastic-plastic crack is extended to include the antishielding dislocations as part of a crack-tip equilibrium configuration, which may be described as follows: (μb/2π) (∫−e−a+∫−c−s +∫sc+∫ae)[ f(x')/(x−x')]dx'+σa=0, when ||x||〈C, or σf, when c〈||x||〈s and e〈||x||〈a. The factors affecting the dislocation distribution are discussed in detail.

Notes: Bilayers Fe/Au-Cu and Fe/Ag-Au made by vacuum evaporation were studied. The magneto-optical polar Kerr rotation and reflectivity spectra were measured in the region from 400 to 700 nm. In the magneto-optical Kerr rotation spectra of bilayers Fe/Au-Cu and Fe/Ag-Au with the thickness of Fe layer less than the light penetration depth, there is a broad enhancement of the magneto-optical polar Kerr rotation with a Kerr peak near the plasma edge in the reflectivity spectra of Au-Cu and Ag-Au alloys. The peak shifts toward the long wavelength side with increasing Cu and Au content in Au-Cu and Ag-Au alloys, respectively. Our results show that the composition of the reflector in our bilayer structures can shift the wavelength range of the magneto-optical Kerr rotation enhancement. Interpretation and discussions are given.

Notes: Compositionally modulated films (CMFs) of Fe/Cu and Fe/Ag, made by RF sputtering, were investigated with ferromagnetic resonance (FMR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and magneto-optical (MO) spectroscopy. Evidence of spin polarization of the nonmagnetic layers, related to the interlayer coupling, was obtained. Direct evidence of the penetration of an exchange field and the spin polarization of the conduction electrons in the nonmagnetic Cu layers was obtained in Fe/Cu CMFs by NMR. Spin-wave resonances were observed in Fe/Cu CMFs in FMR experiments, and the spin wave was found to be sustained by both the Fe and Cu sublayers. The MO spectra of Fe/Ag CMFs indicated that the conduction electrons of Ag are spin polarized and give an additional MO activity.

Notes: Summary The genetics of tiller number at different development stages in rice was studied in a 6 x 6 diallel cross set involving six indica rice varieties in which a large difference of phenotypes existed. Estimates of genetic parameters following Hayman's method showed significant additive and nonadditive gene action, and the latter appeared to be solely due to dominance. High tillering ability was inherited as a partial dominant character conditioned by two or more blocks of genes, and var ‘H1459’ had more dominant genes, whereas ‘Zhu-Yun-Luo’ had more recessive ones. Combining ability analysis by Griffing's method also indicated significance of both additive and nonadditive effects, but the former was more important than the latter. ‘H1459’ and ‘Bi-Yu-Zao-Luo’ were good general combiners, and their hybrids ‘H1459’ x ‘Le-Yi’ and ‘Zhu-Yun-Luo’ x ‘Bi-Yu-Zao-Luo’ were better crosses for combining an optimum tiller number with high percentage of productive tiller. An identical polygenic system appeared to be responsible for the genetic control of both tiller number at the different growth stages and the terminal character, productive tiller number. However, with growth of the plant, relative contributions of nonadditive gene action and environmental factors to the variation decreased, while those of additive gene action increased. Selection for high tillering ability, therefore, should be exercised at peak tillering or later stages.

Notes: Abstract The investigation into the microstructural characteristics of the segregation found occasionally in Ti-6Al-4V alloy showed that the segregated region was enriched in titanium but impoverished in aluminium and vanadium. It was also found that the interstitial content of oxygen and nitrogen was higher in the segregated region. The effect of the segregation on the mechanical properties of the alloy was also studied. The tensile strength, ductility and toughness of specimens with segregation were reduced to compare with values for as-received specimen. The micro-fracture mechanism associated with this segregation was analysed. The results revealed that the plastic deformation is mainly of shear mode in slip band. Microcracks were nucleated preferentially within the segregated region and this is believed to be the cause of brittle fracture on the basal plane (0001) and prismatic plane (10−10) in the hexagonal close packed lattice.
