Notes: This paper examines cognitive considerations in developing model management systems (MMSs). First, two approaches to MMS design are reviewed briefly: one based on database theory and one based on knowledge-representation techniques. Then three major cognitive issues—human limitations, information storage and retrieval, and problem-solving strategies—and their implications for MMS design are discussed. Evidence indicates that automatic modeling, which generates more complicated models by integrating existing models automatically, is a critical function of model management systems. In order to discuss issues pertinent to automatic modeling, a graph-based framework for integrating models is introduced. The framework captures some aspects of the processes by which human beings develop models as route selections on a network of all possible alternatives. Based on this framework, three issues are investigated: (1) What are proper criteria for evaluating a model formulated by an MMS? (2) If more than one criterion is chosen for evaluation, how can evaluations on each of the criteria be combined to get an overall evaluation of the model? (3) When should a model be evaluated? Finally, examples are presented to illustrate various modeling strategies.

The di- or poly-meric species [Mo{HB(Me2pyz)3}(NO)I(p-OC6H4-HgCl)]n is reported, and reaction of [Mo{HB(Me2pyz)3}-(NO)I(p-NHC6 H4I)] with [Pd(PPh3)4] and [Pt(C2H4)(PPh3)2] afforded [Mo{HB(Me2pyz)3}(NO)I{NHC6H4M′(PPh3)2X}] (M′=Pd, X=Br, I; M′=Pt, X=I).

Notes: Summary The complexes [MoL*(NO)Cl(YC6H4YH-m)] (Y = O or NH), [MoL*(NO)Cl(YC10H6YH-1,5)], (Y = O or NH), [MoL*(NO)Cl(OC10H6OH-2,7)], [{MoL*(NO)Cl}2(XC6H4Y-m)] (X=Y=O, NH or S; X=O, Y=NH), [{MoL*(NO)-C1}2(YC10H6Y-1,5)] (Y=O or NH) and [{MoL*(NO)Cl2-(OC10H6-2,7)] have been prepared and studied by cyclic voltammetry. The monometallic species undergo a reversible oneelectron reduction, whereas the bimetallics undergo two oneelectron reductions. A comparison of ΔE1/2 (E1/2(1)-E1/2(2)) values for those new species with those obtained frompara- substituted analogues and bimetallics containing extended bridges YC6H4ZC6H4Y (e.g. Z = S or CH2CH2) established that the interaction between the redox centres in these new species is intermediate (YC6H4Y-m; NHC10H6NH-1,5) or weak (OC10H6O). In earlier papers1,2 we have described the synthesis and electrochemical properties of a series of mono- and bi-metallic complexes of the type [MoL*(NO)X(YC6H4YH)], [MoL*(NO)X}2(YC6H4Y)] and [{MoL*(NO)X}2(YC6H4-ZC6H4Y)] [L*=tris(3,5-dimethylpyrazolyl)borate, HB(Me2C3HN2)3] where the arene ring ispara-substituted (X=Cl or I while Y=O, S or NH and Z = nothing, CH2, CH2CH2, S, SO2 or O). We have shown that the E1/2-values of these species are dependent on X and Y, and that the bimetallic species undergo two one-electron reduction processes. We have established that there is strong interaction between the redox centres in bimetallics bridged byp-YC6H4Y, but that weak-to-negligible interaction occurs in those species containing YC6H4ZC6H4Y bridges. In this paper we describe our investigations ofmete-substituted bridging systems,m-YC6H4Y, and comparable systems containing naphthalene bridges,e.g. 1,5- or 2,7-YC10H2Y. From these studies we hoped to establish the extent of interaction between the two redox centres and how this compared to thepara-substituted arene counterparts.

Notes: Summary Two series of complexes having the formula [M{HB(3,5-Me2C3N2H)3}(NO)Cl(NHC6H4Z-p)]; in which M=Mo and Z=F, Cl, Br, OMe, SMe, CN, CO2Me or NO2 and M=W and Z=Br, OMe, CN, CO2Me or NO2, have been prepared. The reduction potentials of these new complexes were measured by cyclic voltammetry and, in combination with previously reported data for related species and for [Mo{HB(3,5-Me2C3N2H)3} (NO)I-(NHC6H4Z-p], were used to determine reaction constants for the reduction of [M{HB(3,5-Me2C3N2H)3}(NO)X(NHC6H4Z)]M=Mo and X=I or Cl; M=W, X=Cl.

Notes: Summary The determinants of aortic pressure and flow are generally studied using impedance methods, the results of which indicate that reflected waves are important, particularly during aortic flow deceleration. An alternative analysis of measured aortic pressure and velocity, using the method of characteristics to calculate the energy flux per unit area of the waves, suggests a different conclusion. We suggest that aortic deceleration is caused by a discrete expansion wave propagating from the left ventricle, and that energy thus recovered by the ventricle may be coupled to early filling of the ventricle.

Notes: Summary A simple method for the rapid processing of small specimens following intracellular labelling with the fluorescent naphthalimide dye Lucifer Yellow CH is described which involves embedding in glycol methacrylate-based resin on cavity slides. The technique, which may be suitable for other intracellular and extracellular fluorescent markers, permits early fluorescence photomicrography of wholemounts and subsequent recovery of the specimens for serial sectioning and further analysis. In the present study on isolated human eccrine sweat glands, the procedure has facilitated both the identification of cells from which electrical records have been made and the determination of their dye-coupling status.

Notes: Abstract A series of cyclic polyethers, which incorporate the redox active {Mo(NO)}3+ moiety, have been prepared and characterised. The electrochemistry of these complexes has been investigated and their reduction potentials found to undergo anodic shifts upon the binding of alkali metal cations to the cyclic polyether moiety. The magnitude of the shift appears relatively insensitive to the size of the cyclic polyether ring, but is substantially reduced when K+ is used in place of Na+.
