Notes: The performance of a continuous wave actively mode-locked Nd: phosphate glass laser longitudinally pumped by a multistripe diode laser is described. The laser operates at 1.054 μm; the pump threshold and the slope efficiency are found to be 120 mW and 11%, respectively. The shortest pulse duration is 7 ps, which appears to be approximately twice as short as predicted by the theory of amplitude modulation mode locking. We explain the improved performance by additional frequency modulation due to the nonlinear index of the active material.

Notes: Fourteen adult subjects with stable asthma were treated using a double-blind crossover, randomised protocol, with either nedocromil sodium (4 mg or 2 mg) or placebo. The agents were administered from matched pressurised aerosol inhalers 30 min before exposure to an exercise regimen which, on a previous screening day, resulted in a 24–53% (mean: 33.9%) decrease in peak expiratory flow (PEF). Both doses of nedocromil sodium were significantly superior to placebo in preventing the exercise-induced decrease in PEF and were without side effects. This study confirms and extends the results of earlier trials with nedocromil sodium and further supports the contention that this new agent may be of benefit in the treatment of reversible obstructive airways disease in the adult patient.

Notes: Abstract The property of potential homogeneity conduces in the hadron semi-classical model proposed to scalings of angular momentum-mass compatible with the behaviour expected by the Regge law. The scaling of the fundamental quantities (length and time) leads in the gravitational case through the same property (potential homogeneity) to scalings of some observable physical quantities (mass, density, intrinsic angular momentum) which in turn together with the imposition of covariance of the Lagrangian give a Regge-like condition.

Notes: Abstract We calculate the principal inertia moments of a three-dimensional mass distribution rotating with angular velocity ω in a self-gravitating homogeneous field with axial symmetry. We show that the angular momentumJ may, under certain conditions, be of the Regge-like type. These results are used to evaluate the mass and average density of the Universe.

Notes: Summary Pharmacokinetics of the antiarrhythmic agent mexiletine were found to be highly variable. Ineffective or toxic doses can be avoided by monitoring mexiletine concentrations in patients plasma. However, the success of antiarrhythmic therapy is mainly determined by the severety of the underlying disease. Therefore, the efficacy of treatment with mexiletine should be controlled by Holter monitoring.

Notes: Summary Left ventricular function was assessed by means of radionuclide ventriculography in 42 patients with long-standing (13±5 yrs) insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus and in eleven healthy age matched control subjects. Only diabetics were included in the study without diabetes related cardiac risk factors such as hypertension and CAD in order to evaluate diabetes specific changes of cardiac function. No differences were seen between diabetics and controls concerning heart rate and functional parameters of left ventricle in systole and diastole. The rapid filling period was not prolonged. According to our radionuclide data there is no evidence of diabetes related impairment of ventricular function in young patients with long-standing type-1-diabetes mellitus.

Notes: Summary Simultaneous right heart catheterization and radionuclide ventriculography were performed in 27 patients with a wide range of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Central hemodynamics and radionuclide studies were done at rest and during exercise. In the resting state the right ventricular ejection fraction (RVEF) was in the normal range (43.3±6%). During exercise a significant (p〈0.001) decrease of RVEF to 38.8±6.7% occurred. The pumonary artery mean pressures were 19.9±3.8 at rest. During exercise a significant (p〈0.001) increase to 41±9.8 mm Hg occurred. There was a linear relationship between pulmonary pressures and RVEF during exercise in patients with pulmonary artery pressures not exceeding 35 mm Hg. In patients with right ventricular end-diastolic wall thickness ≧6 mm a curvilinear relationship between these parameters could be observed with a flattening of the curve at higher pressures (〉35 mm Hg) and lower ejection fractions (〈35% RVEF). Radionuclide venticulography cannot substitute for right heart catheterization. Echocardiography is useful for interpretation of right ventricular ejection fractions in advanced chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Notes: Summary In January 1986, a cooperative study was started at the Katharinenhospital in Stuttgart, FRG (modified Dornier HM-3) and Kreiskrankenhaus in Kempten, FRG (Wolf Piezolith 2200) to evaluate the range of indications, efficacy and required anesthesia of both lithotriptors. Stone classification and general indications for interventional therapy were similar in both centers. The Dornier HM-3 operates with a modified generator and a new ellipsoid which provide low pressure lithotripsy. With the Piezolith 2200, 99% of ESWL-treatments were performed without any anesthesia, whereas with the modified Dornier HM-3 lithotriptor, minor analgesia using tramadol was necessary in 92%, epidural anesthesia in 8%. The overall success rate was similar in both centers (Piezolith 2200: 94.5% vs Dornier HM-3: 98%). Only 46% of the patients were treated successfully in one session with the Wolf lithotriptor compared to 88% with the Dornier HM-3. Ultrasound localization with the Piezolith 2200 failed in 58% of ureteral calculi, whereas fluoroscopic stone localization (Dornier HM-3) was insufficient in the majority of slightly or nonopaque calculi.

Notes: Summary In our present study we tried to inflate and stabilize isolated immature lungs of fetal minipigs in gestation age of 95 days (= 85% of total normal gestation period) with different fluorocarbons. Based on our previous experiences, the immature lungs at day 95 are almost non inflatable with air [25–27, 29–31]. For our experiments we used fluorocarbon 43 (FC-43) with a surface tension of 16 mN/m and fluorocarbon 72 (FC-72) with a surface tension of 12 mN/m. Eighteen fetal immature lungs were used. In group 1 the lungs were rinsed with FC-43; in group 2 the rinse solution was FC-72, and in group 3 the lungs were untreated. After removing the fluorocarbon, in the case of groups 1 and 2, the lungs were artificially ventilated. Pressurevolume (p–v) curves were registered in the beginning (immediately after FC lavage), after 10 and 20 min of artificial ventilation. Airway opening pressure (pi) and weight-specific end-inspiratory lung compliance (ci) were investigated. Statistically significant differences in weight-specific end-inspiratory compliance were found between FCgroups and untreated group 3, but no stabilization could be seen during the investigation period of 20 min. No statistically significant improvement in weightspecific end-inspiratory compliance was observed between group 1 and 2, although the compliances of group 2 with FC-72 were better than those of group 1 with FC-43 in three p-v diagrams registered in the beginning and after 10 and 20 min of artificial ventilation (Table 2). In airway opening pressure there were no statistically significant differences to be observed between the investigated groups, but the opening pressures of group 2 with FC-72 at 0, 10, and 20 min were always better than those of other groups (Table 1). No significant differences were also seen in wet/dry weight ratio, in content of lipid phosphorus and of phospholipids (dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine, sphingomyelin, and lysophosphatidylcholine) (Table 3). The data presented here suggest that fluorocarbons facilitate transient the inflation of immature lungs. However, for further permanent stabilization the additional replacement of surfactant phospholipids seems to be necessary.

Notes: Abstract Growth on ethanesulfonic acid as the only sulfur source was found to occur in ten of the 14 green algae tested and in three of the ten cyanobacteria analyzed. Similar growth could not be demonstrated in the higher plant Lemna minor, or in tissue cultures of anise, sunflower and tobacco. Organisms growing on sulfonic acids as the only sulfur source developed an uptake system for ethanesulfonate found neither in algae growing on sulfate nor in algae unable to utilize sulfonic acids for growth. The development of sulfonate transport was not caused by substrate induction, but by conditions of sulfate starvation. The presence of this uptake system was always correlated with an increased sulfate-uptake capacity. Enhanced sulfate uptake was found in all S-deficient and sulfonate-grown cultures tested, indicating sulfate limitation as the regulatory signal. A lag period of 2–2.5 h after transfer to sulfate deprivation was needed for expression of both enhanced sulfate uptake and ethanesulfonate uptake in case of the green alga Chlorella fusca. It is speculated that the availability of sulfate (pool size) or a metabolic product in equilibrium with oxidized sulfur compounds (sulfate ester? sulfolipids?) controls sulfate and sulfonate uptake systems. The principle of (coordinated) derepression by starvation is discussed as a general strategy in photosynthetic organisms.
