Notizen: Reflectance of stoichiometric ZrN was investigated from 0.22 to 5.50 eV as a function of temperature between 20 and 700 °C. The complex dielectric function was calculated by a Kramers–Kronig analysis and split to find the interband and intraband contributions, using Drude's theory. This decomposition showed an interband maximum at 2.5 eV which became less pronounced with increasing temperature. Temperature increase had two main effects, first to increase the damping term of the conduction electrons without a significant change of the plasma frequency, second to shift the screened plasma frequency towards lower energies.

Notizen: Abstract A photoacoustic (PA) system for monitoring gaseous air pollutants absorbing in the CO-laser range is presented. The characteristics of the CO laser and the interference caused by water-vapor absorption demand a special design of the PA cell and experimental setup. The optimum cell design was found by numerical simulation of the acoustic properties of various cell geometries. For this purpose a model using infinitesimal analogue acoustic impedances was developed. Based on a matrix formalism for fourterminals, a computer program was applied that permits the calculation of the frequency response of the PA signal amplitude at any position within a one-dimensional PA cell. Excellent agreement with experimental data is obtained. As a result, a new design for an acoustically resonant spectrophone with improved properties is presented. The response of the cell with aQ-factor of 52, operated at 555 Hz, is 2000 Pa cm/W.

Notizen: Abstract The photoacoustic generation of plane acoustic waves in strongly absorbing or opaque liquids by pulsed laser radiation is discussed both experimentally and theoretically. The regimes of a confined and a free surface of the liquid are considered. The model which takes the temporal shape of the laser pulses applied in the experiments into account, implies that spectroscopic studies are feasible with direct photoacoustic generation and detection also for opaque liquids. The experiments are performed with a tunable hybrid CO2 laser and piezoelectric detection. For the first time liquid/liquid interfaces are studied by this technique. We demonstrate that the presence of an absorbing liquid film with a thickness of 〉1 μm on the surface of another liquid amplifies the acoustic signal which is detected in the bottom liquid. The enhancement depends on the thickness and the optical and thermal properties of the film medium. The surface layer can be analyzed on the basis of the photoacoustic spectrum. It is also shown that this non-contact method is surface-film selective and should thus prove useful for pollution analysis of liquid surfaces.

Notizen: Abstract The symmetry classification of possible singlet and also triplet states in the case of the 2-dim square lattice, and 3-dim tetragonal and orthorhombic lattices is examined. If particle-hole symmetry is present then an additional symmetry classification is possible. However in the lower symmetry crystal structures that actually occur, no distinction on symmetry grounds can be drawn between usuals-wave, extendeds-wave and some of thed-wave states.

Notizen: Abstract This paper summarizes experiments on the spectral properties of the terrestrial atmosphere in the infrared 8 to 14 μm spectral window performed with laser photoacoustic spectroscopy on the basis of results from previous airborne measurements on spectral emission. Following a description of the experimental arrangement, novel results on supersaturated water vapor, continuum and line absorption are presented and discussed in relation to actual models of the atmosphere. Besides the measurement of the absorption by supersaturated water vapor in a diffusion chamber, the experimental determination of the water-pressure dependence of the continuum absorption at −10°C and the identification of four weak and narrow absorption lines in the 8 to 14 μm window as pure high-J rotational transitions of the H2O molecule are of interest.
