Zusammenfassung Entsprechend der Zunahme der Reiter nimmt die Zahl der Reiterunfälle in den letzten Jahren stark zu. Verletzt werden vor allem die obere Extremität und der Kopf. Am häufigsten verunglücken junge Frauen und Mädchen. Jeder 4. tödlich verunglückte Sportler war ein Reiter. Das Krankengut von 758 Patienten wird nach Verletzungsart und -modus aufgeschlüsselt. In einer Fragebogenaktion werden Aufschlüsse über die näheren Umstände der Unfälle und die Ursachen gewonnen. Die wichtigste Ursache schwerer Reiterunfälle ist mangelnde Ausbildung und Erfahrung.

Summary Due to the growing numbers of riders, the number of riding accidents increases rapidly. In the majority of cases head and upper extremity are involved. 2/3 of all riding accidents occurred in girls and young women. Every fourth fatal sport accident in Germany was a rider. Interviews included 212 patients, who spoke about circumstances and causes of their accidents. It was found that in more than half of all accidents the reason was lack of experience and poor training.
