Notes: Abstract  When the viscosity of hyaluronic acid (HA) solution was measured with a rotational visco-meter, depolymerization occurred only by leaving the sample in the cup of the viscometer, while the solution in a glass test tube at the same temperature, 37 °C, was practically stable during the entire period of investigation. As the parts where the sample solution had contact with the viscometer are stainless steel, the participation of metal ions in the depolymerization was suspected. Therefore, experiments were carried out with stainless-steel beads in the HA solution. The results show that the molecular weight of HA decreased on exposure to the beads under aerobic conditions. The addition of 10 beads to 2 ml of a 0.1% HA solution prepared with 0.2 M NaCl reduced the molecular weight to about 75% of the initial value after 4 h. The degradation rate was proportional to the surface area of the beads. However, no dissolution of metal ion was detected, and therefore, this reaction was thought to proceed at the surface of the metal.

Notes: Abstract The viscometric constantsa andK in the Mark-Houwink equation were determined in 0.5 M acetic acid-0.5 M.sodium acetate solution for chitosan fractionated by gel filtration. The weight-average molecular weight of each fraction was measured by the light-scattering method. The values obtained area=0.59 andK=0.119 cm3 g−1. The molecular weightsMw andMn for fractionated chitosan were measured by GPC. The value ofMw by GPC was much different from that by light scattering and, therefore, a universal calibration procedure was applied to the data by GPC. It was concluded that, also in the case of a cationic polysaccharide such as chitosan, the universal calibration procedure is effective for obtaining the reliable molecular weight by GPC.

Notes: Adhesive resins with high adhesive strength and high heat resistance have been studied in developing a novel iron-core printed circuit board with high mechanical strength and high heat radiation capability. A reticular pattern formed on the surface of an adhesive resin composed of nitrile rubber, phenolic resin and epoxy resin. It caused blisters in the plating or reduced the heat resistance of the printed board. This pattern was formed as a result of phase separation of epoxy resin or phenolic resin from the nitrile rubber. Using a high-molecular-weight epoxy resin led to high adhesive strength and high heat resistance, without phase separation. The relationships between the composition of adhesive resins and their characteristics were discussed on the basis of the state of their surface after being roughened by chemical etching. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Nonlinear optical susceptibility χ(3) of polydiacetylenes has been evaluated by third harmonic generation. First, in order to obtain the χ(3) tensor component along the polymer main chain, thin single crystals of two representative polydiacetylenes, poly-PTS and poly-DCHD were made by utilization of sampling technique in microscopy, i.e., the microtome cutting of single crystal embedded in plastic resin. The THG intensity observed was proportional to cos8θ, where θ was the angle between the polymer main chain and the polarization of laser light. The χ(3) value of poly-DCHD was found to be rather higher than that of poly-PTS. At resonant wavelength of 1.97 μm, the χ(3) of poly-DCHD attained 8 x 10-10 esu. Furthermore, it was confirmed that when geometrical correction were properly made, the χ(3) obtained from polycrystalline thin film of poly-PTS agreed well with that from thin single crystals. Secondary, regarding poly-diphenyldiacetylene derivatives, it was found that the π-conjugation between the polymer main chain and aromatic substituents was effective on the improvement of χ(3) values. The χ(3) magnitudes of poly-BTFP and poly-DFMP reflect well the dihedral angles between polymer main chain and the phenyl substituents (58° for poly-BTFP and 67° for poly-DFMP) as a measure of π-conjugation. Especially, at nonresonant region of 2.1 μm the χ(3) of poly-BTFP is about 5 times greater than that of poly-PTS.
