Notes: Abstract In the system (poly-(N-vinyl carbazole) (PVK): trinitrofluorenone (TNF) a photoconductive complex is formed. Thin metal films are sputtered on BK7 glass substrates, forming two electrodes with 1 mm separation. The photoconductive complex is deposited from a solution in chlorobenzene/tetrahydrofurane on the glass substrate between the electrodes, forming a photoconductive detector. Photoconductivity of these planar detectors is studied using He-Ne laser light (λ=633 nm) as a function of electric field and for different TNF concentrations. An increase of photosensitivity is found for high TNF concentrations. Time resolution of the photoconductive PVK:TNF detector is investigated using a ruby pulse laser (λ=694 nm). The possible use of such detectors in combination with other polymer lightguides is demonstrated. Compared to most polymer waveguide materials PVK exhibits a rather high refractive index ofn=1.7. Thus the coupling of light into the photoconductive film is achieved directly. The planar structure allows further integration of polymeric components for optoelectronics.

Notes: Abstract Planar waveguides of the allyl polymer poly-(terephthal acid diallyl ester) (PDATP) exhibiting a particular high stress optical coefficient are investigated. Internal mechanical stress may be introduced in the wave-guides by the in-diffusion of small vapour molecules or by the activation of a piezoelectric transducer in the substrate. Based on the induced stress the feasibility of gas sensors or electro acousto optic phase shifters (V π=180 V) with these waveguides is discussed.

Notes: Abstract Leaky-mode spectroscopy enhanced with semitransparent metal films may be effectively used for optical gas detection. Most of the optical sensors show a large temperature drift which is detrimental for application purposes. In this paper a model for the compensation of a particular line shift in the leaky-mode spectrum is given and it is confirmed experimentally.

Notes: Abstract Attenuated total reflection leaky-mode spectroscopy is used for a thermo-optical investigation of a clamped film of the ferroelectric vinylidene fluoridetrifluoroethylene copolymer. A hysteresis loop for the optical parameters refractive index and film thickness is found for a full temperature cycle between 25° C and 60° C. In the vicinity of the ferroelectric/paraelectric phase transition increased optical losses are found.

Notes: The simple combination of thin-layer chromatography on polyamide with subsequent mass spectrometry of the separated compounds together with the carrier material has been employed for unambiguous identification of individual dipeptides in a mixture. The dipeptides were analysed in the form of their dansyl methyl ester derivatives. The appearance of molecular ions in the electron impact mass spectra simultaneously with the ions dans-NH=CHR⌝+ indicating the corresponding N-terminal amino acid residue enables a rapid and sensitive structure elucidation of the dipeptides. The chromatography and mass spectrometry can be performed with 0.2-0.3 nmol dipeptide.

Notes: Liquid - liquid extraction with N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, combined with solid-phase extraction on silica gel using n-pentane and dichloromethane as solvents, has been used for the isolation and concentration of the aromatic fraction from lubricating oil.The identification of individual compounds in this aromatic fraction was performed by capillary gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (CGC-MS) and by determination of retention indices. Quantitative results were obtained by flame ionization detection (CGC-FID). Eighty four compounds, predominantly naphthalenes, phenanthrenes, biphenyls, fluorenes, dibenzo-thiophenes, and their alkylated derivatives, have been identified in a commercial lubricating oil. The total amount of the aromatic fraction did not exceed 0.04 % of the oil.

Notes: A mathematical method for the calculation of the dead time (tm) in HPLC was evaluated using a computer simulation approach, in which artificial perturbations were introduced to Simulated homolog retention times. The calculation was based on a modified and extended Grobler and Bálisz (GB) method. Investigated wav how the precision of the calculated tM is affected by: statistical fluctuations in retention times and which, and how many homolog retention times are used. Based on these simulations a two-step procedure for the tM calculation is proposed: In the first step the linearity of log tR, n vs carbon number n is checked using as many homolog retention times as possible. The slope value bo of the first linear regression in the GB method is used for the selection of homolog retention times in the final tM calculation. In the second step the optimal selection of homologs is made and the final tM calculation is carried out. Guidelines for homolog selection are given.

Notes: A simple and effective solid phase extraction (SPE) method using silica gel micro glass columns has been developed for the separation of diesel fuel into groups of aliphatic, and mono-, di- and polyaromatic hydrocarbons. It is based on a stepwise gradient of dichloromethane in n-pentane. The resulting fractions were analyzed by capillary gas chromatography with a flame ionization detector and coupled gas chromatography-mass spectrometry.Commercially available standards, and retention indices and mass spectra were used for identification of individual aromatic compounds. The principal polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in diesel fuel are naphthalene, biphenyl, fluorene, phen-anthrene and their alkylated derivatives. Sulfur-containing PAHs are mainly represented by methyl-substituted dibenzo-thiophenes.

Notes: Theoretical equations are given to relate resolution with development distance. Comparative experiments undertaken with quaternary ammonium compounds as test substances and using a selection of basic drugs are presented. As expected, resolution decreases with shorter development distance. However, this effect is less pronounced for compounds with small Rf values and when the spot size at the starting point is kept small. It was also shown that, for correctly assessing resolution in relation to development distance, the amounts of material spotted have to be decreased for shorter development distances.
