Notizen: Summary We used isolated lateral semicircular canals from the bull frog, Rana catesbeiana. The cupula was removed from the crista and a glass micropipette was used to depress the sensory cilia on the crista toward the utricular side. Five points on the crista were selected for stimulation. Decremental time constants of the lateral ampullary nerve action potentials were measured. The longest time constant was obtained from stimulation to the wide portion of the crista. The time constant progressively decreased as the narrow side of the crista was approached. These results indicate that the lateral semicircular canal crista is equivalent to the halved posterior semicircular canal crista in terms of both morphology and physiology.

Notizen: Summary We used electron microscopy to investigate Mycobacterium fortuitum -induced changes in the inner ears of mice. We found that the inner and outer hair cells had degenerated and disappeared in the organ of Corti. Changes in the lower turn of the cochlea were more severe than those of the upper turn while the changes of the outer hair cells were more severe than those of the inner hair cells. Disappearance, fusion and ballooning of the sensory hairs were observed in the vestibular organs. The bacterial extract also induced inner ear damage which was similar to that caused by live M. fortuitum.

Notizen: Summary Carbonic anhydrase activity was demonstrated cytochemically on an ultrastructural level in the vestibular end organs of the guinea pig. Reaction product was found in the dark cells, transitional cells, cells of the planum semilunatum and supporting cells. In the dark cells, reaction product was observed in the cytoplasm as well as in the basal infoldings. Reaction product was also observed in the basal infoldings of the transitional cells and the cells of the planum semilunatum. The globular structures inside the supporting cells, transitional cells and the cells of the planum semilunatum were also surrounded by the reaction product. These findings suggest that carbonic anhydrase may have different functions, such as water and ion transport, respiration, nutrition and calcium carbonate deposition in the vestibular end organs.

Notizen: Summary The subcellular structures of the epithelial cells of the guinea pig endolymphatic sac were studied. By using a newly developed scanning electron microscopy technique, the intracellular organelles could be studied three-dimensionally and the topographic relationships analyzed. The light epithelial cell has an extensive network of endoplasmic reticulum which is characteristically arranged in a basoapical direction. The connections between the inner surface of the plasmalemma and the endoplasmic reticulum were observed, as were connections between the Golgi complex and the endoplasmic reticulum. Our findings support the hypothesis that the endoplasmic reticulum might form transcellular channels through which the cell can transport water and ions from the lumen of the endolymphatic sac out into the subepithelial tissue. The dark epithelial cells seen in particular contained the smooth type of endoplasmic reticulum. Lysosomes were also observed in the dark cells, indicating that these cells probably have more of a secretory function.

Notizen: Summary The frog Rana nigromaculata was used as an experimental model. The utricle and its nerve were isolated with the anterior and the lateral semicircular canal ampullae in frog Ringer's solution. The utricular otoconia and the otoconial membrane were then carefully removed. The halved anterior canal cupula was next placed in the tip of a glass microelectrode, which was mounted on a micromanipulator. The cupula was placed in the center of either the medial or the lateral part of the macula and was moved toward or away from the striola along the axis vertical to the striola. When the medial part of the macula was stimulated, 5 μm of striolapetal cupular movement elicited an excitatory nerve discharge. When the lateral part of the macula was stimulated, the striolapetal stimulus likewise induced an excitatory response. These results indicate the existence of physiological polarity on the utricular macula.

Notizen: Abstract Two ways of rate control for diaphragm pacing are proposed. One is rate control using only the patients' body temperature (method I). The other is rate control by both the patients' heart rate and body temperature (method II). To test the effectiveness of these methods, a diaphragm pacemaker which can be controlled by both heart rate and body temperature has been developed. It was applied to nine mongrel dogs. The pacing rate is controlled by atrial blood temperature (method I) or by both heart rate and temperature (method II). The animal's metabolism was elevated by the administration of a pyrogenic drug. It was found that method I is not suited to rapid changes in metabolism; however, it is useful in extreme metabolic elevation. An animal's metabolism was supported by using method II in all ranges of metabolism. This method proved more effective than method I for rate-responsive diaphragm pacing.
