Zusammenfassung Nach Darstellung der heute für operative Kliniken wesentlichen Hospitalismusursachen wird die Problematik dos mikrobiellen Hospitalismus am Beispiel einer 1972 an der Chirurgischen Universitätsklinik Tübingen aufgetretenen Serie von 14 tödlichen post-operativen Klebsiellenpneumonien dargestellt. Die möglichen Ursachen der Infektionsserie werden diskutiert und die ergriffenen Bekämpfungstnaßnahmen dargelegt. Mit Nachdruck wird eine rigorose Einschränkung der Antibioticagaben gefordert. Dar Berufung hauptamtlicher Krankenhaushygieniker wird entscheidende Bedeutung beigemessen.

Summary Following presentation of the reasons for hospital infections in surgical clinics the problems of microbial hospital infection are illustrated with reference to a series o f 14 fatal cases of postoperative pneumonia caused by Klebsiella pneumoniae. All these infections occurred in severely ill patients following major operations. The possible reasons for the infections are discussed and the countermeasures adopted are reported. A rigorous restriction of prophylactic treatment with antibiotics is emphasized. The employment of full-time clinical hygiene officers seems to be very important.
