Notes: Abstract Sixty-nine Kuwaiti patients with osteoarthritis (OA) were studied. Primary knee OA was seen in 65 (94.2%) patients. The mean age of this group was 53.18 years with a range of 39–97 years. The female to male ratio was 2.82∶1. OA was bilateral in 84.62% and predominantly involved the medial tibiofemoral joint. According to Kellgren's grading of knee OA, grade 1 changes were present in 40.0%, grade 2 in 32.5%, grade 3 in 22.5% and grade 4 in 5.0%. Grade I obesity was seen in 13%, grade II in 64% and grade III in 23% of patients. Generalised primary nodular OA was seen in only four patients, all of whom were women. Primary OA of the hip joint and chondrocalcinosis were conspicuous by their absence.

Notes: Abstract In seven recently diagnosed and untreated patients with tobacco amblyopia the light and dark adapted electroretinograms were recorded together with visual acuity, central fields and the Farnsworth-Munsell 100-Hue test. After 3 months treatment with injections of hydroxocobalamin all these tests were repeated. An improvement in visual acuity resulted in all cases. A significant reduction in the Farnsworth-Munsell total error score of the seven patients was noted (p 〈 0.01). A significant increase in the amplitude of the light adapted b-wave of the ERG was found (0.01 〈 p 〈 0.02) following the course of hydroxocobalamin injections. No other significant changes in the ERG were demonstrated. It is suggested that the ERG changes demonstrated an improvement in an abnormal biochemical state in those bipolar and perhaps Müller cells of the inner nuclear layer of the retina which make electrophysiological connections chiefly with foveal cones.
