Notes: Gastric emptying of orange-flavoured glucose (group I), low-fat milk (group II) and breast milk (group III) was evaluated in 45 ASA grade I children of ≤ 5 years of age by using real-time ultrasonography and residual gastric volume and pH was then measured. In 15 more children, residual gastric volume and pH was measured after a midnight fast (group IV). Mean (SD) gastric emptying time in group I was 1.53 (0.25) h (range 1.00–1.75), group II 2.32 (0.31) h (range 1.75–2.75) and group III 2.43 (0.27) h (range 2.00–2.75). According to Robert and Shirley's criteria, no children of group I and II were found to be ‘at risk’ at 2 h and 3 h, respectively, but 13.3% of group III children were labelled as ‘at risk’ at 3 h. The incidence of ‘at risk’ children in group IV was 33.3%. It was concluded that 3% fat milk or 17.5% glucose in a volume of 10 ml.kg−1 (maximum volume of 100 ml) can be given in children safely 3 h and 2 h, respectively, before anaesthesia. More real-time studies are required on breast milk to establish guidelines for its potential use as a pre-operative feed 3 h before anaesthesia.

Notes: Summary This paper reports a rare malformation syndrome which is observed in two sibs (brother and sister) of a family. It consists of nearly symmetric reductive defects of the limbs, flexon contractures of various joints, cleft lip and cleft palate, multiple minor abnormalities including capillary hemangioma of the forehead, hypoplastic cartilages of ears and nose, micrognathia, intrauterine growth retardation, and possibly mental retardation. Chromosomes of both parents and propositi are normal. Genetic data suggest autosomal recessive inheritance.

Notes: Abstract In seven recently diagnosed and untreated patients with tobacco amblyopia the light and dark adapted electroretinograms were recorded together with visual acuity, central fields and the Farnsworth-Munsell 100-Hue test. After 3 months treatment with injections of hydroxocobalamin all these tests were repeated. An improvement in visual acuity resulted in all cases. A significant reduction in the Farnsworth-Munsell total error score of the seven patients was noted (p 〈 0.01). A significant increase in the amplitude of the light adapted b-wave of the ERG was found (0.01 〈 p 〈 0.02) following the course of hydroxocobalamin injections. No other significant changes in the ERG were demonstrated. It is suggested that the ERG changes demonstrated an improvement in an abnormal biochemical state in those bipolar and perhaps Müller cells of the inner nuclear layer of the retina which make electrophysiological connections chiefly with foveal cones.

Notes: Abstract For productive utilisation of effluent–contaminated agricultural land, mobilisation and statistical analysis of potentially toxic elements in soil and plants of fields irrigated with mixedindustrial effluent have been undertaken. Total Fe,Mn, Zn, Cu, Pb, Ni and Cr have been estimated in soiland plant species of contaminated and noncontaminatedsites. 18 plants species and 18 root adjacent soilsamples from contaminated Kalipur area and 11 plantsspecies and 11 root adjacent soil samples fromuncontaminated Madhabpur area comprising majorcrops, vegetables and weeds have been included in thestudy. It is revealed that Hibiscusesculentus, Lycopersicon esculentum and Luffa acutangula growing in effluent–contaminated field show mobilisation ratio 〈0.5 for most of the PTE (Potentially Toxic Elements) likeCu, Pb, Ni, Cr and Cd and normal morphology.Surprisingly, weeds in particular, show highmobilization ratio 〉0.5 and simultaneously exhibithealthy gigantic morphology at the early floweringstage. Coriandrum sativum, Raphhanussativus, Solanum melongena, Spinaceaoleracea, Oryza sativum, Brassica oleraceashowed mobilization ratio 〉0.5 butmaintained normal growth. Based on mobilization ratioand external morphology, we suggest the cultivation ofplants H. esculentus, L. acutangula, L. esculentum in land irrigated with industrial effluent. The highest andsecond highest enrichment factor (EFpp)was found for Cd and Pb, respectively. Pearson'scorrelation coefficient indicated that the metal levelin soil is not the main factor governing metaluptake. This study will help in selecting plantspecies for cultivation in contaminated fields.
