    Notes: Summary The effects of maytansine, an antimitotic compound isolated from an African plant, were studied by light and electron microscopy in dissociated cell cultures of adult mouse dorsal root ganglia. Maytansine at 10–100 ng/ml concentration caused reversible, concentration-dependent, inhibition of microtubule assembly and induction of a large amount of 10 nm filaments in the cytoplasm of cultured neurons and Schwann cells.

    Notes: Summary In long-term organized cultures of newborn mouse cerebellum, granule cell neurons were studied with silver impregnation and electron microscopy. In silver impregnated cultures, small neurons are defined as granule cell neurons from their size, morphology and location. There are also occasional large nerve endings with the morphology typical of mossy fiber endings. In correlative electron micrographs, granule cell neurons revealed a faithful reproduction of characteristic structures seen in vivo. The fine structural details of cerebellar glomeruli and myelinated granule cell bodies developed in vitro were also described.

    Notes: Abstract Exogenous administration of gangliosides induced neuronal differentiation with prominent neuritogenesis in human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells in vitro. Neuritogenesis was characterized by ruffling of the cell membrane, the development of lamellipodia and filopodia, and the subsequent elongation and branching of the neurites ultrastructurally. Both axons and neurites were identified. Increased numbers of cell organelles in the neurites and cell bodies were noted. Nonsynaptic contacts and gap junctions formed between neurites or between each neurite and cell body. These findings could be implicated in histopathologic changes from neuroblastoma to ganglioneuroblastoma.
