Notes: Summary Cytochemistry and electron microscopy permitted to demonstrate that the so called Gaucher cells in chronic myelogenous leukaemia are phagocytosing reticular cells which contain stored glucolipides in spindle-shaped cytoplasmic sacs. The stored lipids derive from ingested granulocytes destructed in the reticular cells by lysosomal enzymes. Furthermore, Prussian blue staining indicates that the presence of a phagocytosis of erythrocytes or erythroblasts by these cells has to be supposed. High resolution electron microscopy reveals that the stored material differs from that found in storage cells of Gaucher's disease. It does not consist of tubuli but of a lamellar system of dark (40 Å) and light (30 Å) layers, which are curved in the longitudinal as well as in the cross-sectional view.

Notes: Summary Cell lines established from advanced mammary and ovarian carcinomas were assayed for the inhibition of in vitro proliferation by various antineoplastic drugs. The assays were performed with multiple experimental cultures derived from stock cultures of the tumor cell lines in early passages of the cultivation. As determined by comparison of the 50% inhibition of in vitro growth, differential sensitivity of the individual cell lines was observed. Based on the 2-h plasma level of the drugs as discriminatory threshold between resistance and sensitivity, the in vitro effectiveness of each, drug on the individual cell lines was compared with the clinical results of chemotherapy applied to the corresponding patients. In total, positive in vitro/in vivo correlations were observed in 39 of 42 cases. The 17 cell lines evaluated retrospectively were resistant to those drugs which had been tried unsuccessfully during chemotherapy. Among the 25 cases tried prospectively 11 cases showed sensitivity in vitro and in vivo, and furthermore 11 prospective cases were resistant in vitro and in vivo.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary A 10-year old boy developed an arteriocavernosal fistula with a permanent penile erection (high-flow priapism) after a blunt perineal trauma. The diagnosis was established by Doppler ultrasound, blood gas analysis and angiography. A conservative treatment attempt with penile cooling and puncture of the cavernosal corpera with blood aspiration and etilefrine instillation failed to resolve the priapism. An embolization of both bulbocavernosal arteries was followed by an immediate detumescence. Normal functional erection was preserved. No recurrence was observed during a follow-up of 6 months.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Vom 1.1.1976–1.10.1978 wurden 8 Frauen, die jahrelang Kontrazeptiva eingenommen hatten, mit gutartigen Lebertumoren behandelt, in allen Fällen lautete die histologische Diagnose: fokale noduläre Hyperplasie.
Notes: Summary From 1.1. 1976-1.10.1978 8 women taking oral contraceptives for many years were admitted with benign hepatic tumors. The histological diagnosis in all cases was focal nodular hyperplasia. In 6 women the tumor was single, in 2 women multicentric. Diagnosis by computer tomography, sonography, liver scanning and angiography. A specific diagnosis is only possible by laparoscopy with biopsy of the tumour and the normal liver tissue. Because of the danger of rupture and intra-abdominal hemorrhage and a rare trend to malignancy, enucleation or resection of these tumours was performed; two of the multicentric hepatomas localized at the hepatic veins remained in place. Mortality was 0 %. After cessation of oral contraceptives the remaining tumors did not change in size during one to two years. Enucleation or resection is recommended treatment of choice for benign hepatic tumors.
