Notes: We fabricated a scanning Hall-sensor microscope with an active area 50 μm×50 μm that can be served as a simple and conventional tool for nondestructive evaluation of magnetic materials. Using this, we succeeded in magnetic detection of small cracks (∼10 mm long and ∼0.1 mm wide) in mild steels with a yield point of 29 kgf/mm2, caused by a plane-bending fatigue test at a stress amplitude of 28 kgf/mm2 and a frequency of 29.2 Hz. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The results of a 13 °C, 9 GHz electron-paramagnetic resonance (EPR) investigation of the sulfate salts of the species formed by the base hydrolyses of solutions containing Mn2+ and Al3+, in the molar concentration range 1≤Mn/(Al+Mn)≤10% is reported. The EPR spectra of the microcrystalline samples consisted of the superposition of two overlapping axial, hyperfine structure (hfs) central transition Mn2+ resonances with g=1.9994(2) D=6.93(3) mT, A=8.56(3) mT, A=8.49(2), P=0.4(1)×10−4 mT, and gn=0.7(1)×10−3, and an unresolved resonance due to exchange coupled Mn2+ ions. The results are consistent with the interpretation that the resolved axial symmetry hfs central transition spectrum arises from Mn2+ ions replacing aluminum in either the tetrahedral or octahedral sites of the tridecameric Keggin-like cation [AlO4Al12(OH)24H2O)12]7+, which is known to form when Al3+ solutions are hydrolyzed under these conditions. The unresolved, exchange coupled spectrum must arise when two or more Mn2+ ions substitute into the same cation. The ratio of the intensities of the axial and exchange coupled Mn2+ centers had a maximum near the stoichiometric molar concentration 7.69% [i.e., Mn/(Al+Mn)=1:13]. The temperature dependence of the EPR spectral intensity and total hfs splitting for the resolved hfs central transition spectrum revealed that a first-order isomorphous phase transition occurred at 120 °C. .

Notes: The distribution of a magnetic field in single-phase polycrystalline bulk MgB2 has been measured using a magneto-optical (MO) technique for an external magnetic field applied perpendicular to the sample surface. The MO studies indicate that an intergranular current network is readily established in this material and the current is not limited by weak-linked grain boundaries. The grain boundaries are observed to resist preferential magnetic-field penetration and the persistent current has an intergranular character at temperatures up to 30 K. The results provide clear evidence that the intragranular current flow is isotropic. A critical current density of (approximate)104 Acm−2 was estimated at 30 K in a field of 150 mT from the magnetic-field gradient using the standard Bean model. These results provide further evidence of the considerable potential for MgB2 for engineering applications. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The effect of sun drying on trays for 48 hr and of oven drying in an air-forced oven at 60°C for 24 hr on the cyanide content of chips of ten cassava varieties was studied. Fresh cassava chips from whole roots of these varieties showed significantly different total cyanide contents among them with values in the range of 100–900 mg/kg on a dry matter basis; most of the varieties studied exhibited cyanide contents in the range of 200–600 mg/kg. The free cyanide proportion in the fresh chips was in the range of 30–40% of their total cyanide. Sun and oven drying reduced the cyanide content in the dried chips to approximately 15–30% of the initial cyanide content of fresh chips. In addition, the free cyanide content in dried chips accounted for approximately 60–80% of their total cyanide value.

Notes: Abstract. During the period from 1965 to 1980, 263 Vibrio anguillarum strains from ayu, Plecoglossiis altivelis (Temminck & Schlegel), two from rainbow trout. Salmo gairdneri Richardson, and two from eel, Anguilla japonica (Temminck & Schlegel), were collected from fish suffering from vibriosis in various parts of Japan. On the basis of cross-agglutination and cross-absorption tests with thermostable (O) antigens, six distinct serotypes (A, B, C, D, E and F) were established among 12 selected strains of V. anguillarum. 241 strains isolated from ayu and two strains from rainbow trout belonged to serotype A, six strains from ayu and one strain from eel to serotype B, 12 strains from ayu to serotype C, three strains from ayu to serotype D, one strain from ayu to serotype E, and one strain from eel to serotype F. V. anguillarum strains belonging to serotypes D, E and F have not been detected from ayu, rainbow trout and eel since 1973; these serotypes appear to be minor types. V. anguillarum strain NCMB 6 and 1669 belong to our serotype A and V. anguillarum 813 to our serotype C.

Notes: Abstract. Two-hundred-and-fifty-nine strains of Vibrio anguillarum isolated from diseased cultured ayu, Plecoglossus altivelis in various districts of Japan from 1974 to 1977 were studied for their sensitivity to 12 different chemotherapeutic agents: chloramphenicol (CM), tetracycline (TC), streptomycin (SM), kanamycin (KM), aminobenzyl penicillin (ABP), colistin (CL), nalidixic acid (NA), oxolinic acid (OA), piromidic acid (PA), furazolidone (NF), sulpharaonomethoxine (SA) and trimethoprim (TMP). One-hundred-and-thirty-four of the strains were additionally tested for sensitivity to O/129(2,4-diamino-6,7-diisopropyl pteridine) and ormethoprim (OMP). All strains were susceptible to SM, KM and ABP and also highly sensitive to CL. A correlation of resistance was found among the chemically-related drugs NA, OA and PA, and TMP, OMP and O/129, Nine strains were sensitive to all the drugs tested. The remaining 250 strains were resistant to various combinations of six drugs (CM, TC, NA, NF, SA and TMP). In particular, strains resistant to NA and NF (20.1%), to CM, TC, SA, NA and NF (29.7%) and to all six drugs (28.2%) were frequently detected. NA- or NF-resistant strains have increased since 1974 and TMP-resistant strains have increased since 1976. Transferable R plasmids were detected in 165 out of 250 resistant strains. The most common type of R plasmid determined resistance to CM, TC and SA. These multiple drug-resistant strains with transferable R plasmids were isolated from many different districts.

Notes: This study was carried out to investigate whether readily available paprika can replace astaxanthin as a source of carotenoids in soft-dry pellets for broodstock yellowtail Seriola quinqueradiata (Temminck & Schlegel). Five months prior to spawning, 120 fish of average body weight (BW) 6.2 ± 1.5 kg were divided into three groups and fed basal soft-dry pellets (SDP), SDP supplemented with 30 mg/kg astaxanthin (a-SDP), or SDP supplemented with 2% paprika (p-SDP). Feeding was carried out in floating net cages and two spawning trials were performed. Fish were selected (five male and five female per group per trial), injected with human chorionic gonadotropin (600 IU kg−1 fish) and transferred to 100 m3 indoor concrete tanks for spawning. In trial 1, egg production during the first day of spawning was highest for the p-SDP group, followed by the a-SDP and SDP groups. For the p-SDP, a-SDP and SDP groups, fertilization rates were 76.0%, 69.7% and 61.9% and hatching rates were 75.2%, 63.9% and 59.4%, respectively. In trial 2, fertilization rates were 80.9%, 78.0% and 86.8% and hatching rates followed the same trend as in trial 1, at 61.8%, 52.9% and 37.2%, respectively. Moreover, larvae of the p-SDP groups showed better survival at day 3 after hatching. Apart from the darker yellow colour of fertilized eggs of the astaxanthin or paprika supplemented diet groups, analysis showed that carotenoids from paprika were successfully incorporated into the eggs, mainly as zeaxanthin and lutein. Paprika supplementation did not affect the fatty acid and lipid class profiles of eggs and unfed larvae. These results indicate that paprika supplementation in soft-dry pellets is effective for good quality egg production in yellowtail.
