Notes: Abstract  Velocity statistics along the stagnation line of an axi-symmetric wall stagnating turbulent flow are studied experimentally. A low turbulence, uniform air flow from a nozzle type air supply with an exit diameter of 50 mm stagnates at a wall located 50 mm downstream. A flow velocity is set to 3 m/s, 10 mm downstream from the exit of the air supply. Instantaneous values of streamwise and radial velocities are measured by laser-Doppler velocimetry. The turbulence level in the air flow is changed by use of turbulence generator. When the turbulence generator is not installed in the air supply, the mean velocity profile in the streamwise direction fits well with that of a laminar viscous flow with the rms value of velocity fluctuations low near the wall. With the turbulence generator installed, a significant turbulence structure appears near the wall. When the wall is approached, the rms value of velocity fluctuations in the streamwise direction decreases monotonically while the profile of the rms value in the radial direction reaches a maximum near the wall. The increase in the rms value of velocity fluctuations in the radial direction near the wall is attributed to the bi-modal histogram of the fluctuating velocity in the radial direction. Near the wall, the instantaneous stagnation streamline fluctuates and the probability of the mean location of the stagnation point reaches a maximum not at the stagnation line but on a circle around the stagnation line, resulting in the bi-modal histogram. Turbulence statistics, the rms value of velocity fluctuation and the turbulent kinetic energy, can be normalized successfully by similarity parameters based on the strain rate and the reference turbulent kinetic energy introduced by Champion and Libby.

Notes: This study was carried out to investigate whether readily available paprika can replace astaxanthin as a source of carotenoids in soft-dry pellets for broodstock yellowtail Seriola quinqueradiata (Temminck & Schlegel). Five months prior to spawning, 120 fish of average body weight (BW) 6.2 ± 1.5 kg were divided into three groups and fed basal soft-dry pellets (SDP), SDP supplemented with 30 mg/kg astaxanthin (a-SDP), or SDP supplemented with 2% paprika (p-SDP). Feeding was carried out in floating net cages and two spawning trials were performed. Fish were selected (five male and five female per group per trial), injected with human chorionic gonadotropin (600 IU kg−1 fish) and transferred to 100 m3 indoor concrete tanks for spawning. In trial 1, egg production during the first day of spawning was highest for the p-SDP group, followed by the a-SDP and SDP groups. For the p-SDP, a-SDP and SDP groups, fertilization rates were 76.0%, 69.7% and 61.9% and hatching rates were 75.2%, 63.9% and 59.4%, respectively. In trial 2, fertilization rates were 80.9%, 78.0% and 86.8% and hatching rates followed the same trend as in trial 1, at 61.8%, 52.9% and 37.2%, respectively. Moreover, larvae of the p-SDP groups showed better survival at day 3 after hatching. Apart from the darker yellow colour of fertilized eggs of the astaxanthin or paprika supplemented diet groups, analysis showed that carotenoids from paprika were successfully incorporated into the eggs, mainly as zeaxanthin and lutein. Paprika supplementation did not affect the fatty acid and lipid class profiles of eggs and unfed larvae. These results indicate that paprika supplementation in soft-dry pellets is effective for good quality egg production in yellowtail.

Notes: Abstract Intracranial abnormalities by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in acute carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning have been described in two cases. Edematous bilateral lesions have been demonstrated in the globus pallidus. Findings correspond with the pathological changes described in literature. In our experience MIR is a more sensitive examination compared to serial computed tomography (CT) in acute CO poisoning.

Notes: Abstract The arrangement of cortical microtubules (MTs) in differentiating tracheids of Abies sachalinensis Masters was examined by confocal laser scanning microscopy after immunofluorescent staining. The arrays of MTs in the tracheids during formation of the primary wall were not well ordered and the predominant orientation changed from longitudinal to transverse. During formation of the secondary wall, the arrays of MTs were well ordered and their orientation changed progressively from a flat S-helix to a steep Z-helix and then to a flat S-helix as the differentiation of tracheids proceeded. The orientation of cellulose microfibrils (MFs) on the innermost surface of cell walls changed in a similar manner to that of the MTs. These results provide strong evidence for the co-alignment of MTs and MFs during the formation of the semi-helicoidal texture of the cell wall in conifer tracheids.

Notes: Abstract In order to reveal the behavior of the hydrogen atoms in an ammonium salt, the hydrogen-isotope exchange reaction between each of the three ammonium halides and tritiated water vapor was followed at 50–80°C. Analyzing the data obtained by theA″-McKay plot method, the following has been quantitatively clarified: both the reactivity of an ammonium halide and the temperature dependence of its reactivity increase when the electronegativity of the halogen element in the ammonium halide is larger.

Notes: Abstract In order to reveal the reactivity of monosubstituted thiophenols, the hydrogen-isotope exchange reaction between T-labeled poly(vinyl alcohol) and each monosubstituted thiophenol (unlabeled) was studied in a liquid-solid system. Using both the data obtained and theA″-McKay plot method, the reaction was analyzed, and the rate constant (k) for the monosubstituted thiophenol has been obtained. Consequently, it has been found that (1) the higher the temperature is, the larger is the reactivity of monosubstituted thiophenols, (2) the temperature dependence of the effect of the substituent (in a monosubstituted thiophenol) on the reactivity of the monosubstituted thiophenol is weak, (3) the reactivity of monosubstituted thiophenols follows the Hammett rule, (4) the reactivity of monosubstituted thiophenols can be enhanced with one of the electron-attractive substituents.

Notes: Abstract In order to reveal the reactivity of toluenethiols, the hydrogen isotope exchange reaction between one of three toluenethiols (o −,m −, andp −) and poly (vinyl alcohol) labeled with tritium was observed at 50 ≈ 90°C. The reaction was analyzed with both the data obtained and theA″-McKay plot method, and the following has been quantitatively clarified: (1) the reactivity order of toluenethiols is (o −〉(m −)〉(p −); (2) the temperature dependences of the reactivity of toluenethiols are nearly equal; (3) the reactivity of benzenethiol is considerably decreased by the CH3 group bonded to the ortho position.

Notes: Abstract In order to reveal to what extent tritium (3H or T) can be incorporated into hydroxides, the isotope exchange reaction (OT-for-OH exchange reaction) between each alkaline earth metal hydroxide (M(OH)2), where M means alkaline earth metal (M=Ca, Sr or Ba) and HTO water was observed homogeneously at 30 °C under equilibrium after mixing. Consequently, the followings were obtained: (1) a quantitative relation between the electronegativity of each M ion and the ability (of the M ion) incorporating OT− into the M hydroxide can be found and the ability is small when the temperature is high, (2) the exchange rate for the OT-for-OH exchange reaction is small when the electronegativity of the M ion in the M hydroxide in great, (3) as for the dissociation of HTO water, it seems that fomula (HTO⇆T++OH−) is more predominant than the fomula (HTO⇆H++OT−) when the temperature is high and (4) the method used in this work is useful to estimate the reactivity of a certain alkaline material.

Notes: Abstract Observing the OT-for-OH exchange reaction between iron(II or III) hydroxide and tritiated water (HTO) leads to the following results: (1) isotope exchange as “atomic group” occurred between the OH group in each iron hydroxide (i.e., Fe(OH)2 or Fe(OH)3) and OT− resulted from the dissociation of HTO; (2) the ratio of the reactivity of the hydroxides is roughly [iron(III) hydroxide]: [iron(II) hydroxide]=1.2∶1.0 and the result is related to a difference in electronegativity between Fe2+ and Fe3+. (In other words, if the reactivity depends on the number of the charge, the ratio should be 1.5∶1.0).
