Notes: Summary Differences in time of wilting of chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) in response to Race 1 of Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. ciceris, are confirmed. C-104 wilts later than JG-62 and the difference in time of wilting appears to be inherited as a single gene with early wilting partially dominant to late wilting. Considered in relation to earlier studies, the observations indicate that at least two genes are involved in the inheritance of resistance in chickpea to Race 1 and offer an explanation for previous difficulties in interpreting the inheritance of resistance.

Notes: Summary Tests of parents and F1, F2 and F3 generations of crosses of JG-62 (early-rilting) and C-104 (late-wilting) with resistant cultivars provide further evidence that resistance in chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) to Race 1 of Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. ciceris is controlled by at least two genes, both of which must be present in homozygous recessive form for complete resistance. Singly, one of the genes delays wilting, as in C.104. The second has not yet been isolated but crosses of resistant parents with JG-62 suggest that it operates in similar fashion.

Notes: Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) film formation has been investigated for polymers in which non-linear optical (NLO) moieties are attached to the side chain of a polymethacrylate (PMA) backbone. Polymer monolayers were successfully transferred onto hydrophilic glass substrates using a moving-wall type LB trough. The LB films were characterized by pressure-area isotherms, polarized ultraviolet visible spectra, ellipsometry, and second harmonic generation measurements. The characterization shows that NLO moieties in the side chain are inclined at a shallow angle to the plane of the substrate. The second-order nonlinear optical coefficient and molecular hyperpolarizability were also calculated. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: A new class of all organic sol-gel second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) materials based on hexa(methoxymethyl) melamine (HMM) was developed. Two NLO active chromophores, 4 (4′-nitrophenylazo) aniline (DO3) and 4-amino-4′-nitrobiphenyl (ANB), were incorporated into the melamine matrices. The samples exhibited second-order optical nonlinearity after poling and curing at 220°C for 30 min. DO3/HMM and ANB/HMM samples showed a second harmonic coefficient, d33 of 10.7 and 1.8 pm/V at 1064 nm, respectively. The temporal stability of both systems was studied at room temperature as well as at 100°C. Waveguide optical losses of samples at 633 and 830 nm were found. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The synthesis and characterization of a novel epoxy-based photocrosslinkable nonlinear optical (NLO) polymer exhibiting enhanced thermal stability is reported. The synthesized polymers show spectroscopic properties (NMR, IR, UV) in accordance with the proposed structures. A glass transition temperature (Tg) of 112°C and a thermal degradation temperature (Td) of 310°C were recorded. The poled polymer film exhibits stable second-order nonlinear optical activity (d33 = 19.5 pm/V) over a period of 500 h as characterized by the temporal response of the second harmonic signal at room temperature. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Surface eruptions that are approximately 0.5 μm in diameter at the base and about 700 Å in height have been observed by atomic force microscopy on single crystals and films of polydiacetylenes of the alkylurethanes of 5,7-dodecadiyn-1,12-diol when the polymerization is performed using 60Co gamma radiation in the presence of air. The eruption process is associated with monomer polymerization and is anisotropic, as the eruptions are found only on the (100) face of single crystal specimens. Crystals having surface eruptions are irreversibly converted from blue to red at room temperature on exposure to a single pulse of 532 nm laser light while crystals lacking eruptions do not undergo this change.
