    Notizen: Low-field thermomagnetic analysis of sintered Nd(Dy)-Fe(Co)-B magnets provides new evidence that the high coercivity near room temperature is due to the pinning of residual domain walls in a ferromagnetic grain-boundary phase. The temperature where MHc drops to near zero appears to be the Curie point of that phase. It is 50–80 °C below the Tc of the 2-14-1 matrix.

    Notizen: Many alloying additions have been made into Nd-Fe-B-type magnets to alter their permanent magnet properties, in particular for applications above 100 °C. To this end, a common practice has been to add Dy, increasing Hci [M. Sagawa, S. Fujimura, H. Yamamoto, H. Matsuura, and K. Hiraga, IEEE Trans. Magn. 20, 1584 (1984); M. Tokunaga, M. Meguro, M. Endoh, S. Tanigawa, and H. Harada, ibid. 20, 1964 (1985)]. It is not unusual to find Hci 〉20 kOe in these substituted alloys. This approach has caused a dilemma. In some cases, increasing Hci above 20 kOe makes the alloy more difficult to magnetize and therefore less useful when the field available for magnetizing is 25 kOe or less. We have examined the effect of various alloying additions and heat treatment on the magnetizability of substituted Nd-Fe-B alloys. We show that high Hci at room temperature is not a necessary requirement to have Hci 〉6 kOe at 150 °C. We discuss the factors affecting the magnetizability of Nd-Fe-B-type magnets.

    Notizen: An interesting behavior of Si as an additive to Co alloys is expected, since Si is supposed to change the structure and the magnetic properties of Co alloys as a metalloid element. From the above reason, the relationship between the microstructures and the magnetic properties of the sputtered Co-Si alloy films was investigated in detail. As the Si content was increased to 35 at. % Si, such changes of magnetic properties were found that the coercive force of the sputtered Co-Si alloy films reached the peak of about 550 Oe at 6–10 at. % Si, below or above which the coercive force is relatively small. On the other hand, according to the transmission electron microscopic observation at relatively low magnification, the grain size of α-Co crystallites forming the films was found to decrease as the Si content increases. The results of Lorentz electron microscopy showed large magnetic domains in the films with a Si content below 6 at. %, very fine magnetic domains in the films with 6–10 at. % Si content, and the disappearance of magnetic domains in the films with greater than 25 at. % Si. From the above, it can be mentioned that the magnetic properties of the sputtered Co-Si alloy films are very closely related to the microstructures and/or the magnetic domain structures.

    Notizen: The hot working conditions were examined for Nd-Fe-B die-upset magnets. The Nd14Fe80B6 ternary composition has the best workability (die upsetting) from stress-strain curves for the initial stage of die upsetting at hot working temperature. The compression ratio defined as the inverse of reduction in height should be larger than 4 to have materials aligned. Alignment of c axis along the compressive stress direction is obtained, but grain coarsening occurs during die upsetting. Of several additional elements investigated, Ga is the best for enhancing the coercivity with a little sacrifice of remanence and no deterioration in hot workability. Typical magnetic properties for Nd14Fe79.25B6Ga0.75 die-upset magnets are Br =12.4 kG, iHc =19 kOe, and (BH)max =36 MGOe. The irreversible loss after exposure up to 160 °C is under 10% (Pc =2). The iHc of powder made by crushing the die-upset magnets is nearly independent of particle size. Decrease in iHc by pulverizing to several hundred micron is about 2 kOe. Anisotropic bonded magnets were developed using this powder. Best energy products of injection and compression molded magnets with Ga addition are 10 and 15 MGOe, respectively. The irreversible losses after exposure up to 120 °C is lower than 5% (Pc =2), which is enough thermal stability for polymer-bonded magnets.

    Notizen: In order to understand the variety of HTLV-1-associated cutaneous diseases, we studied the cytological profile of HTLV-1-infected T-cell lines established from patients with adult T-cell leukaemia (ATL). Among four CD4+ cell lines, termed 16T(−), 35T(−), MH-1, and KS-2, the 16T(−) cells secreted elevated quantities of IL-4, IL-b and IFN-7, and expressed mRNA for each cytokine in the absence of exogenous stimulation. The 3ST(−) cells secreted IL-6 and a small amount of IFN-7, but not IL-4. The MH-1 and KS-2 cells secreted only 1L-6 in the absence of stimulation, hi response to stimulation with phorbol-12-myristate-13 acetate (PMA), the 16T(−) cells produced more IL-4 and IFN-γ, whereas the 35T(−) and MH-1 cells exhibited increased secretion of IFN-γ, but still no IL-4 or IL-4 mRNA production. Although neither IL-4 nor IFN-γ were found in the culture supernatant of KS-2 cells, the production of IL-4 mRNA was detected by RT PCR. Culture supernatants from the 16T(−) and 35T(−) cells induced the expression of intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) and HLA-UR by cultured keratinocytes. This response was inhibited by pretreatment of the supernatant with anti-IFN-γ antibodies. These results indicate that some HTLV-1-infected T-cell lines constitutively secrete various cytokines, including biologically active IFN-γ. The diversity of immunobiological functions of the T-cell lines may be related to the variety of clinical features present in ATL patients.

    Notizen: Epidermal desmogleins with molecular weights of 130/140kDa (Dsg3 or PVA) and 150/160 kDa (Dsg1 or DGI) are recognized by autoantibodies from patients with pemphigus vulgaris (PV) and pemphigus foliaceus (PF), respectively. In order to understand the histogenesis of both types of pemphigus, we studied the expression patterns of Dsgl and Dsg3 during stratification of cultured keratinocytes. Monolayers of cultured normal human keratinocytes demonstrated uniform inter cellular staining with PV sera. The staining pattern was distinct from the focal staining with PF sera observed only in the stratified areas. Both Dsgl and Dsg3 proteins and their mRNA were expressed by the monolayers, whereas no production of Dsg2 (HDGC) mRNA was found. The relative ratio of Dsg3 to the total desmogleins, as determined by density on immunoblotting, decreased as the cultured keratinocytes stratified. In the completely stratified keratinocytes cultured on collagen membrane, Dsgl became predominant, with subsequent reduction of PV antigen expression. The relative decrease of Dsg3 (PVA) during epidermal differentiation might be responsible for the induction of suprabasal acantholysis in PV.
