    Notes: A two-dimensional fluid model is developed to study the equilibrium flow of electrons in the vacuum gap between the cathode and the plasma of a plasma opening switch. The dynamics of electron flow in the vacuum gap region is illustrated by the distributions of the magnetic field, the electrostatic potential, and the electron density. The dependencies of the switch current and its interruption in the vacuum gap on the dimensions of the vacuum gap, the load impedance, and the electrostatic potential across the gap are investigated. The two-dimensional aspect of the electron flow in the vacuum gap and its effects on the performance of a plasma opening switch are emphasized.

    Notes: We report the use of a tunable diode laser locked to a molecular vibrational absorption line as a sensitive plasma etching endpoint detector. Measurements were made on multilayer silicon wafers etched in a SF6 plasma discharge. We show that polycrystalline silicon to silicon dioxide endpoint transitions on wafers with exposed area as small as 33 mm2 should be observable by detecting the etch end product SiF4. The method shows considerable potential as an endpoint detection technique for applications such as contact hole etching wherein very small areas are being etched.

    Notes: We demonstrate how force detection methods based on atomic force microscopy can be used to measure displacement in micromechanical devices. We show the operation of a simple microfabricated accelerometer, the proof mass of which incorporates a tip which can be moved towards an opposing surface. Both noncontact operation using long range electrostatic forces and tapping mode operation are demonstrated. The displacement sensitivity of the present device using feedback to control the tip-surface separation is approximately 1 nm. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Aims:  To analyse the lung pathology of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and correlate the findings with the time sequence of the disease.Methods and results:  Ten patients with a clinical diagnosis of SARS, and virological confirmation of SARS coronavirus infection were identified. Histology in most cases showed diffuse alveolar damage, from early to late phases, and the changes corresponded to the time sequence. Other variable features include multinucleated giant cells, pneumocytes with cytomegaly and variable amounts of inflammatory cells and foamy macrophages. One case showed superimposed bronchopneumonia. No viral inclusions were found. Coronavirus particles were identified in pneumocytes by electron microscopy.Conclusions:  The predominant pathological process of SARS is diffuse alveolar damage and, in patients who die from the disease, there is evidence of organization and fibrosis. There are apparently no histological features specific for this disease, and the aetiological diagnosis depends on virological and ultrastructural studies.

    Notes: Abstract We present a general second-order-correct frame transformation on spherical-harmonic coefficients of differential particle intensity. The transformation, valid for relativistic particles as well, provides a clear view of the Compton-Getting effect. It shows explicitly how each transformed harmonic coefficient depends on a subset of the original harmonic coefficients. The general expression for the first-order Compton-Getting vector anisotropy is derived and interpreted. In addition, we show how the new transformation allows one to simplify a current procedure for determining the directional intensity in a comoving frame. This involves the directional particle data measured on a spacecraft.

    Notes: Abstract Two new forms of a simplified Fokker-Planck equation are derived for the transport of low-energy solar energetic particles in an evolving interplanetary magnetic field, carried by a variable radial solar wind. An idealised solution suggests that the ‘invariant’ anisotropy direction reported by Allum et al. (1974) may be explained within the conventional theoretical framework. The equations may be used to relate studies of solar particle propagation to solar wind transients, and vice versa.

    Notes: Abstract The propagation of solar-flare cosmic rays along a corotating spiral mean interplanetary magnetic flux-tube is investigated under a variety of initial, inner and outer boundary conditions, by solving the transport equations numerically. The inner boundary condition is shown to have negligible effects on the redistribution of the cosmic rays in interplanetary space, apart from a proportionality constant. The diffusion coefficients have been classified into type I and type II: for type I the peakalong-spiral stays at a finite heliocentric distance, while for type II it travels to infinity. The time dependence of the anisotropy vector is characteristically different in each type and in the case of type I is a function of the observation point. The general propagation characteristics with a free-escape outer boundary are like those of type I. It is shown that closely exponential decay can be produced without a free-escape boundary. The concept of an ‘equilibrium shape’ at late time is introduced. With a source that decays slowly, a maximum and minimum pair appears in the spatial distribution; the maximum subsequently propagates outward and the minimum inward. The impulsive models given do not reproduce satisfactorily all the observed characteristics of solar burst events and a solar source extended in time appears to be indicated.

    Notes: Summary The electrophysiological effects of lorcainide 1.25 or 2.5 mg/kg given iv over 2 or 4 min, were studied in 21 patients with normal and diseased impulse formation and conduction, by means of intracardiac recording and stimulation. Sinus rate and the effective atrial refractory period rose following both doses of lorcainide. The corrected sinus node recovery time rose only after lorcainide 2.5 mg/kg and then most markedly in patients with sinus node dysfunction. The P-A interval remained unchanged following the drug. The A-H interval during sinus rhythm, and the pooled A-H intervals during atrial pacing, increased slightly, and the functional and effective A-V nodal refractory period changed variably. Wenckebach periods above the bundle of His occurred at lower atrial pacing rates following both doses of lorcainide in 7 patients, at the same atrial pacing rate in 9 and at higher rates in 3. H-V intervals, pooled H-V intervals and QRS-width lengthened in all patients, most markedly in cases with a conduction delay below the His bundle, who had received lorcainide 2.5 mg/kg. Thus, lorcainide shares some electrophysiological properties with procainamide and aprindine. Higher doses should be used with caution in patients with pre-existing conduction delay below the bundle His.
