Notes: A case of tinea nigra occurring in a Caucasoid girl aged 10 is described. The infection was probably contracted in Malaya where she had lived between the ages of 2 and 4½. The course of the infection was chronic and protracted, with a tendency to recur after apparent cure. The mycological features are described and the aetiology is discussed.

Notes: The problem of suffering is essentially a problem in philosophical theology. For many philosophical systems the phenomena of suffering set no special problem at all. The most influential philosophies of the present age, for example, have almost nothing to say on the subject—and there is no reason why, on their metaphysical; principles, they should say anything. The problem is a relevant one only for those philosophies which claim to be in at least general accord with the “religious interpretation of the universe.” But for them it is crucial. Given a Weltanschauung like that of Absolute Idealism, for which the ultimate principle from which all things derive their being is an Infinite and Perfect Spirit, and it becomes at once a clear obligation to offer some explanation of how we are to reconcile the Goodness of God with the existence in the world of so much suffering which is prima facie just bad. As we all know, the problem is an extraordinarily hard one to solve. But, inasmuch as the religious interpretation of the universe demands its solution as a condition of its own possibility, its importance is proportionate to its difficulty.

Notes: Summary The mechanism of resistance to foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) which occurs 2 days after divinyl ether-maleic only anhydride (pyran copolymer) treatment but diminishes by the 7th day was investigated. Adsorption of virus by minced infant mouse spleen, muscle, kidney, heart or liver was not affected either at 2 days or 7 days after treatment of the mice with pyran. However,in vitro multiplication of FMDV in minced kidney was affected by pyran at both times. The resistance of mice 2 days after treatment was related to absence of virus in muscle, kidney, and spleen tissues. Seven days after pyran administration, however, FMDV was recovered from muscle and spleen but not kidney. Interferon was recovered from various tissues 2 days but not 7 days after mice were injected with pyran. Other unknown polymer-induced antiviral factors as well as interferon may have been related to the resistance mechanism.
