Conjugation in Macrocyclic Systems, XXVIII. Benzo-anellated [14] AnnulenesIntramolecular oxidative coupling of trans, trans-di-1-hexen-5-ynylbenzene (1), the preparation of which is reported, yielded the 14-membered ring system 2. Prototropic isomerisation of 2 led to benzo[14]annulene for which structure 5 is derived from 1H NMR data. - Along a similar route, starting from 8 via 11, 12 and 13, phenanthro[9,10 a][14]annulene (6) has been synthesized. 1 H NMR spectra of 5 and 6 are discussed with regard to the perturbation of the [14]annulene system by benzo-anellation. Whereas For 5 the annulene ring was proven to be diatropic, this is not the case for 6 although for a coplanar 6, due to the high π-bond order of the 9,10-bond of phenanthrene, a stronger diatropicity of the annulene system was expected than for 5. This result is explained on the basis of steric hindrance of coplanarity in the 14-membered, ring of 6 which is also suggested by the temperature-dependent 1H NMR spectrum of 6.
Notes:
