Notes: A Tritrichomonas foetus-likt flagellate was found in the stomach, small intestine, and cecum as well as in the nasal cavity of pigs. Xo appreciable differences in morphology or response to cultivation could be found among the trichomonads from the different sites; therefore, it is considered that they.belong to a single species, Tritrichomonas suis (Gruby & Delafond). a description of which is given. This organism could be grown indefinitely in various media, and, after a short period of cultivation, it was the only species surviving in cultures that originated from cecal samples containing 2 or 3 species. T. suis was found in the nasal cavity in 55 of 100 pigs, in the stomach in 41 (8.0%) of 512, in the small intestine in 3 of 100. and in the cecum in 215 (43.370) of 496. A T. batrachorum-type trichomonad, herein described as Tritrichomonas rotunda n. sp., was found in the cecum in 52 (10.5%) of 496 pigs. This species is typically broadly pyriform or rotund (average length 8.95 ± 0.83 ii, range, 6.83-11.4), with 3 equal or subequal anterior flagella slightly longer than the body, a relatively low undulating membrane extending y2 to 2/1 of the length of the body, and a posterior free flagellum usually a little shorter than the body. The narrow axostyle, expanded anteriorly into a curved capitulum closely associated with the large, spherical, anteriorly located nucleus, projects from the posterior surface of the flagellate for a distance which equals about 2/3 half of the body length. The parabasal apparatus is biramus. This species could be maintained only temporarily in media not containing extracts of cecal contents. A Trichomonas pronazeki-typt flagellate, found in the cecum in 126 (25.4%) of 496 pigs and in the small intestine in 1 of 100. is described as Trichomonas buttreyi n. sp. This organism is relatively small (average length 5.92 ± 0.79 μ, range 4.55-7.49). ellipsoidal in shape, with 5 to 4 flagella up to twice as long as the body, a relatively high undulating membrane of body length, a narrow axostyle with an inconspicuous capitulum closely associated with the usually oval nucleus, a projecting part of the axostyle that equals about j; of the body length, and a disc-shaped parabasal body lying dorso-lateral to the nucleus. In media without cecal extract this species could not be subcultured.

Notes: The monumental works of Bertrand Russell and Louis Couturat have set a firm pattern of interpretation which many follow in their approach to the Philosophy of Leibniz. In the Preface to the second edition of The Philosophy of Leibniz, Russell reaffirms his contention that “Leibniz’s philosophy was almost entirely derived from his logic”. He welcomes the support provided in Couturat’s La Logique de Leibniz. Russell remarks “No candid reader—can doubt that Leibniz’s metaphysic was derived by him from the subject-predicate logic. This appears, for example, from the paper ‘Primae Veritates’ where all the main doctrines of the Monadology are deduced, with terse logical rigor from the premises; ‘Always therefore the predicate or consequent adheres in the subject or antecedent, and in this fact consists the nature of truth in general—But this is true in every affirmative truth, universal or singular, necessary or contingent’.” Referring further to Couturat, he points out that in his book the “Principle of Sufficient Reason” and “The Identity of Indiscernibles” are “expressly deduced—from the analytic character of all true propositions”. In short, Russell is contending that in formulating his metaphysics Leibniz (i) used the rigorous methods of deductive logic and (2) employed “models” drawn from logic to construct his “picture of reality”, i.e. his metaphysics.

Notes: [Auszug] CO2/P CH2 Me CH2 HO,i This duality of reaction path has some interesting consequences, in particular in considering the biogenesis of natural porphyrins which are derived by the polymerization of porphobilinogen (II). Most of the common porphyrins belong to the so-called III series, for example, ...

Notes: Abstract 1. Measurements were made of stem length, leaf number, leaf size, total yield and marketable yield on two varieties of Brussels sprout, on inbred lines derived from them, and on hybrids produced by crossing the inbred lines of the two varieties. 2. Three sets of such measurements were taken at different periods in the growing season. The standard errors of plot totals decreased with increasing plant maturity, but the standard errors of the within-plot variances were not affected. 3. Inbreeding depression varied considerably in degree, both between different inbred lines and between different characters in the same line, and ranged from a 5 per cent. reduction in number of leaves to a 58 per cent. reduction in marketable yield, as compared with the parent non-inbred varieties. 4. Hybrid vigour varied in a similar manner, but all hybrid families gave yields which exceeded that of the highest yielding parent variety. 5. In every hybrid family studied, the increase in the marketable yield, as compared with the mean of the parent varieties, was greater than the increase in any other character including total yield. It is suggested that this was the result of selection during inbreeding, for uniformity of desirable sprout quality. 6. Analysis of the within-plot variances of the characters measured suggested that uniformity for plant and leaf size characters had not been markedly changed by inbreeding. 7. The contrast between increased uniformity for sprout quality and lack of detectable change in uniformity for plant and leaf size characters is attributed to different rates of approach to homozygosis at different loci as a result of selection. 8. Inbred lines can combine to produce hybrid families with yields superior to those of the non-inbred parent varieties. Work is continuing on both the breeding and assessment of inbred lines, and on the technical problems involved in the production of hybrid seed in commercial quantities.

Notes: The transfer rates of n-butanol, cyclohexanol, and ethyl acetate into water drops have been measured for circulating and oscillating drops. Methods of allowing for the end-effect transfer have been extended and measured values compared with predictions of a model.Various mechanisms for transfer inside drops have been examined in terms of a correlation factor.
