Notes: [Auszug] In this laboratory the alteration in the fatty acid composition of hen egg yolk lipid has now been definitely attributed to cyclopropenoid compounds as a result of feeding pure methyl sterculate to White Leghorn bantam hens. Table 1 shows the contents of stearic and oleic acids in the yolk lipid ...

Notes: Abstract Selection among the progeny of crosses between self-blanching and green varieties of celery has given high yielding, early maturing, self-blanching lines which are less stringy and of better flavour than existing early maturing self-blanching varieties. The crosses were made by using blow-flies to pollinate pairs of non-emasculated self-blanching and green plants enclosed in pollen proof bags. In the progenies from seed harvested only from the self-blanching parents in such crosses, the hybrid seedlings could be distinguished from the non-hybrids by their green colour. Since the self-blanching character was determined by a single recessive gene in the homozygous condition, it was possible to recover true breeding self-blanching plants in the F2 generation. From the F2 generation onwards, all selection for quality characters was made only on self-blanching plants. Trials have shown that in addition to the improvement in quality, two F4 lines derived from such material gave yields which were somewhat greater than those of the control varieties and had satisfactory blanching. More extensive trials are in progress to determine whether the lines show consistently superior quality, and whether they have sufficient merit to warrant their release as new varieties.

Notes: Steady state solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations for Reynolds numbers of 0.1, 1, 50, 100, and 200 have been obtained by using finite-difference methods. The effects of radial and angular step size and wall proximity have been investigated. Results were found in the form of stream function and vorticity distributions with pressure distributions and drag coefficients calculated from them. The results compare favorably with experimental data and show a steady trend from Hadamard-Rybczynski flow to boundary-layer flow after Levich-Chao-Moore. For a circulating sphere of low viscosity there is no flow separation indicated at Reynolds numbers equal to or less than 200.

Notes: Numerical solutions of the equations that describe steady state, forced-convection mass transfer around single circulating or noncirculating gas bubbles have been obtained for both first- and second-order chemical reaction conditions. For the noncirculating bubbles, solutions have been obtained up to Reynolds numbers of 200 with Kawaguti velocity profiles used to describe the flow. In the case of circulating gas bubbles, Kawaguti profiles have been utilized up to Reynolds numbers of 80, while the potential flow velocity profiles have been used for higher Reynolds numbers. The numerical results for circulating gas bubbles have been compared with penetration theory for both first- and second-order chemical reactions. For the case of noncirculating gas bubbles the solutions for physical mass transfer have been compared with the Ranz and Marshall correlation as well as with the results of Griffith and the more recent work of Tsubouchi and Masuda.

Notes: Abstract Twenty aluminum cylinders with internal, integral tee-stiffener rings were tested under combinations of axisymmetrical axial load and external lateral pressure to determine buckling characteristics. Seven geometric types were tested; the primary variables were the ratios of cylinder radius to shell thickness, stiffener spacing to shell thickness, and stiffener spacing to stiffener depth. An eighth type, which had variable stiffener spacing and depth, was tested under a lateral pressure varying linearly in the axial direction. Strain-gage data were obtained to aid in evaluation of results. The test results agree well with the theoretical work used for the design.
