Notes: It is suggested that the growth of a grass sward may be affected by heterogeneity of plant height. An initial test of this possibility was made by cutting a stand of Dactylis glomerata in such a way as to produce adjacent areas of tall and short herbage. This pattern was obtained by using three different cutting treatments, two of which gave yields which were greater than predicted from controls. The results are discussed in relation to alternative methods of harvesting grass.

Notes: [Auszug] We briefly report here the results of three crystal structure determinations in which protactinium has been found to show co-ordination numbers of six, seven and eight. Co-ordination numbers nine1 and ten2 for this element are also known. Protactinium pentabromide has been found to be dimorphic, ...

Notes: Abstract A series of basaltic and andesitic lavas from three centers in the Cascades (Lassen, Medicine Lake, Mt. Shasta) have been investigated. The lavas are weakly porphyritic, containing phenocrysts of plagioclase, augite, and olivine or orthopyroxene; these phases are also found in the groundmass. Titanomagnetite is a groundmass phase in most lavas but it appears to be absent in some. A sub-calcic augite is found in the groundmass in some of the basic lavas. Orthopyroxenes are present only in the salic lavas and show an increase in calcium with increasing iron. The range in composition shown by both phenocryst and groundmass plagioclase is very similar except that the phenocrysts extend to slightly more calcic compositions. The residual glasses in many of the lavas have a rhyolitic composition. However, only those from the Shasta andesites have normative salic constituents that plot near the ternary minimum in the Ab-Or-Qtz system at 500 bars. Both chemical and mineralogical data allow the lavas of the different centers to be distinguished from one another. The most likely origin for the orogenic lavas of the Cascades is by partial melting of the upper mantle.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary 1. The fatty acid composition of total phospholipids and of Jecithin, lysolecithin and phosphatidylethanolamine isolated from bovine chromaffin granules was determined. 2. Total phospholipids are relatively rich in plasmalogens. Phosphatidylethanolamine is also rich in plasmalogen whereas lecithin contains less. Unsaturated fatty acids comprise about 60% of the total fatty acids in both of the latter phospholipids. 3. The lysolecithin of chromaffin granules is characterised by a high content (77%) of saturated fatty acids and a very low content (4%) of polyunsaturated fatty acids. The major fatty acid is stearic acid. 4. The lysolecithin formed by the action of snake venom phospholipase A2 on lecithin isolated from chromaffin granules has a fatty acid composition very similar to that of the endogenous lysolecithin. 5. It is concluded that the lysolecithin in chromaffin granules is formed by the action of a phospholipase A2 on lecithin and is the 1-acyl isomer. Possible sub-cellular events involved in the formation of the lysolecithin are discussed.
Notes: Zusammenfassung 1.

Notes: Summary and conclusions Since the introduction of cortisone for clinical use in 1950, clinicians have become increasingly aware of the correlation between patients on corticosteroid therapy and the increased incidence of gastric ulceration. This observation has led several investigators to suggest that the ulceration was caused by a direct, local irritation of the gastric mucosa. Such a possibility has been evaluated by directly exposing the rat gastric mucosa in vivo to prednisone tablets for up to 30 min. Exposed areas were examined grossly and biopsy specimens were obtained for microscopic examination. In no instance was any sign of acute inflammation or ulceration observed. These findings indicate that oral corticosteroids do not have an immediate, direct irritant effect on the normal gastric mucosa of the rat. Any increased incidence of peptic ulceration seen in patients on long-term therapy of this type is probably best explained on the basis of a progressive increase in mucosal susceptibility to ulceration caused by factors as yet not completely determined.
