Notes: Summary New-born mice were X-rayed under extreme hypothermia in order to estimate the radioprotective effect of hypothermia on body weight, brain weight, development of cerebellum and the hematopoietic system. A protective effect was found in the rate of survival, in body and brain weight, in the cerebellum and in the number of erythrocytes. After hypothermia, the repair of damage in the cerebellum and the erythropoietic system starts earlier. The protected mature cerebellum shows an approximately normal status. Hypothermia does not prevent the initial decrease of lymphocytes caused by X-rays, and it produces a severe disturbance of hemoglobin content.

Notes: Summary In a clinical study we tested the following parameters: free fatty acids, beta-hydroxybutyrate, acid-base-balance, lactate, bilirubin, uric-acid, fructose, xylitole, glucose in blood and urine. The tests were executed in 9 patients who were undergoing stomac operations. The cardio pulmonary system of all patients was normal, and there was a homeostasis in water and electrolytes preoperatively. In combination with the amino-acids we received a ratio of 1/3n1/3n1 for glucose, levulose and xylitole. Totally, the patients received 0,36 g per kg body weight and per hour of carbohydrates. Beta-hydroxybutyrate, aceto-acetat, and free fatty acids show normal values under conditions of parenteral nutrition as well as lactate, uric acid, and acid-base-balance. The ratio of the different carbohydrates in serum and urine prove that the infusion time and volume were extremely favourable. The loss of carbohydrates in urine was very low.

Notes: Abstract There is an empirical function of the heights of tides on the Sun produced by Venus, Earth, and Jupiter whose period is nearly equal to that of the 11-yr sunspot cycle (Wood, 1972). This period match has been used in suggestions that planetary tides cause sunspots and, indirectly, terrestrial climate changes and earthquakes. We derive the period of the tidal function in terms of the planetary orbital periods and show that it is artificially lengthened by aliasing. Furthermore, there exists a class of functions whose measure in frequency space is so great that, in the absence of a physical justification for preferring one member, no statistically significant period match can possibly be made with current sunspot data.

Notes: Summary The effect of LSD 25 (i. v. injection) on the spontaneous and evoked activity of the visual system was investigated in cats. 50 γ/kg did not change significantly the ERG and the visual cortical evoked potential. The spontaneous discharge rate of 14 out of 21 retinal ganglion cells showed an increase which reached its maximum within 20–30 min and which could still be present 1 hour following the injection. One third of the retinal units showed a slight depression of their spontaneous dischaRge rate with about the same time course. Single units of the LGN showed about the same behaviour. The response to light stimulation was slightly increased in some units and light induced inhibition was slightly shortened. The possible mechanism of the LSD-effect on retinal ganglion cell activity is discussed.

Notes: Summary Various brands of digoxin tablets, and even different batches of one brand, may differ greatly in bioavailability. Digoxin-Sandoz® tablets have been compared with Lanoxin® manufactured between 1969 and 1972 and after May 1972. Comparisons were also made between and within batches of Digoxin-Sandoz tablets. Three separate cross-over studies were conducted involving a total of 20 volunteers. Digoxin-Sandoz tablets were shown to have a constant bioavailability and to produce plasma concentrations very similar to “new” Lanoxin. Storage for 2 years of one batch of Digoxin-Sandoz did not alter the bioavailability. Particle size was shown to influence bioavailability. Care should be exercised when plasma data alone are interpreted as an index of bioavailability. Measures of bioavailability based on plasma data obtained up to 6 h after administration differed from those based on cumulative urinary excretion data (in this study by a factor of about 2), which can lead to the belief that a difference in bioavailability is much greater than is actually the case. Data from cumulative urinary excretion, collected over a sufficiently long period of time, are likely to be the most reliable method for determining the bioavailability of a substance such as digoxin.

Notes: Summary 4 patients with non-homogeneous neurological and psychiatric symptoms, displaying evidence of essential cryptogenetic paraproteinosis are described. The distinct nature of this metabolic anomaly or derangement is pointed out and its pathophysiological implications are interpreted. In addition mention is made of a solid plasmacytoma of the cerebellopontile angle (case 5), which was verified by histology.

Notes: A method is described for the micro-identification of both mono- and diesters of 12-deoxyphorbol based upon a combination of thin-layer chromatography and mass spectrometry. The technique may be used on as little as 5 ml of fresh plant latex. Nine thin-layer systems are described, six of which are adsorption systems based on silica gel or alumina as adsorbent, and three are partition systems using diethyleneglycol as stationary phase. The migration by means of thin-layer chromatography is dependent upon the chain length of the C-13 esterifying acid and on the presence or absence of a free primary hydroxyl group at C-20. By means of mass spectrometry it was possible to confirm the identity of the esterifying moiety at both the C-13 and C-20 positions of 12-deoxy-4βOH-phorbol.
