Notes: Abstract The effect of three body v.d. Waals forces on the elastic constants of solid argon, krypton and xenon is calculated. It is pointed out that three body forces and zero-point motion have the opposite effect on the violation of the Cauchy relationc 12=c 44. Due to three body forces the quantitityδ=c 44−c 12/c 12 is changed from about +4 to −4% for argon, while in the case of xenonδ is shifted from + 1 to −9%.

Notes: Summary The authors on a case of poisoning through inhalation of an organic mercury compound (trade name “Fusariol”) used for treating seeds. 18 years after the poisoning the patient died and an autopsy was performed when the authors found the rarely commented-on situation of a selective atrophy of the visual cortex in both hemispheres and came to think about the toxic effect organic mercury compounds might have in this respect. The authors in an animal experiment had the pathogenesis of poisoning by organic mercurial compounds investigated into. Acute, subacute and chronic states of poisoning were induced in rabbits injected varying doses of a solution of “Fusariol”, i.e. ethyl-mercury-acetone. Comparable lesions of the CNS could not be induced which may be due to a lesser sensitivity of the rabbit brain, yet in addition to the well-known typical alterations in the kidneys they found fatty degeneration and necroses of the heart muscle which up to the present time has hardly been recognized. The authors discuss why mercury would cause lesions in the CNS, the heart and the kidneys, but not in other organs. The authors assume that the organ-specific lesion is a function of the number of capillaries that particular organ has. Furthermore the strong cytotoxic effect of mercury on these organs may be due to their being rich in enzymes that may be inhibited by the SH-group-binding activity of mercury. For these reasons the CNS, the heart and the kidneys, and within these organs in particular the visual cortex, viz. the subendocardial region, viz. the proximal and distal convoluted tubules which all three have an abundant supply of capillaries and are especially rich in enzymes may be the sites of predilection for mercury-induced lesions. No evidence could be found for mercury-induced blood vessel spasms having lead to the described pathological alterations of the CNS.

Notes: Summary 23 patients, who had survived severe, closed head injuries for 8 to 275 days, were found to have alterations of the leptomeninges in the form of chronic nonpurulent leptomeningitis. This was in addition to primary or secondary traumatic brain lesions. It is suggested that, these leptomeningitides are not chronic sequelae of primary, traumatic leptomeningitides, but rather inflammatory, reabsorptive reactions caused by the traumatic lesions of the brain. Two cases of obturating, “adhesive arachnitis” were observed ocurring simultaneously with severe occlusion hydrocephalus. It is suggested that this so-called adhesive arachnitis maybe a complication of a primary traumatic leptomeningitis with an exudative inflammation and subsequent hyalinization and collagenization of proteinrich, inflammatory exudates.

Notes: Abstract Anthopleura stellula Ehrenberg 1834, a sea anemone from Eilat, Red Sea, is redescribed in detail and shown to be synonymous with Anthopleura elatensis England 1969. Asexual reproduction by autonomous transverse fission has been observed over a period of 8 months in A. stellula maintained in Mediterranean seawater (37.0 to 37.5‰ S). Fission always occurs at the same level, below the pharynx, and is followed by an asynchronous regenerative process beginning at the initial point of cleavage. The distal portion of a bisected anemone regenerates a new pedal disc, while pharyngeal formation is induced by the mesenteries of the first-budding directive tentacle in the proximal half; the original oral disc pattern is restored. After regeneration has been completed, the newly formed anemone can similarly engage in transverse fission. The fission process spreads infectionsly. If Bunodactis verrucosa, a Mediterranean anemone, is maintained in the same aquarium with A. stellula then the beginnings of fission followed by dedifferentiation are observed in the Mediterranean species, which does not ordinarily reproduce asexually. A. stellula still exhibits its induced ability to divide transversly if transferred into fresh Mediterranean seawater. When these specimens are exposed to low temperatures (12° to 13°C) for 2 months, fission activity still remains, but for only one division; there is no further fission, and no regeneration of a pedal disc. Abrupt increases in salinity to the salinity level of the Red Sea (40.0 to 41.0‰) interrupt the fission activity and pedal disc regeneration. A. stellula incised at the level where fission usually occurs promptly undergo transverse fission if cultured with other dividing anemones. However, the other anemones merely exhibit wound healing if the salinity is high. It is thought that fission and regeneration are induced by stimulating substances produced by the anemones during low salinity conditions and that the stimulating substances accumulate in the aquarium water.
