Notes: Abstract— We describe a method for the fluorometric determination of 5-hydroxyindoles in the physiological range of 0.010–1.30 μg/ml of whole blood by means of an autoanalytical procedure. Serotonin is dialysed free from haemolysed blood constituents and a complex between 5-HT and o-phthaldialdehyde is formed in the dialysand to provide a considerable increase over the native fluorescence of 5-HT in strong acid. The method has been evaluated and considered to be accurate for the continuous monitoring of levels of 5-HT in whole blood and for the determination of cerebral arteriovenous differences. The range of values for human patients with cerebrovascular disease was 0.09–0.34 μg/ml of whole blood. In experimental studies on the baboon the range was 0.538–1.28 μg/ml. A mean positive cerebral arteriovenous difference for 5-HT (and possibly other 5-hydroxyindoles) of 0.037 μg/ml was measured in 10 baboons. This finding suggests the possibility of physiological movement of 5-HT and 5-hydroxyindoles into brain across the blood-brain barrier.

Notes: Abstract Large quadrupole moments of 1-phonon states of sperical nuclei are shown to follow in a simple and direct way from time-dependent HF equations using the self-consistent perturbation expansion. Whereas the first order describes harmonic quadrupole oscillations, anharmonic terms arise in second order. The scattering of quasiparticles by quasi-particle pairs, which is neglected in RPA calculations, but included in this paper, leads to a second order response of the system and is shown to produce a strong enhancement of the quadrupole moments. Explicit results are obtained with a pairing-plus-quadrupole interaction and discussed within a schematic two level model.

Notes: Abstract The crystal growth of hydroxyapatite at 25° and at a constant pH of 7.4 has been studied with the aid of a scanning electron microscope. The reproducible technique of seeded growth from stable supersaturated solutions was used effectively to produce samples of the mineral at various distinct stages of growth. Phase changes were observed as the growth proceeded and these corresponded favorably in time with kinetic results reported earlier. An attempt was made to rationalize the observations in light of mechanisms proposed for the formation of hydroxyapatite under conditions foundin vivo.

Notes: Summary Regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF), hemispheric blood flow (HBF), extracranial blood flow, and regional cerebral blood volume (rCBV) have been measured in a series of patients using a gamma camera equipped with a magnetic tape system for storage and retrieval. This method eliminates the need for multiple probes in measuring these parameters. 133Xe and 99m Tc injected into the carotid arteries were used as radioactive indicators. These measurements were carried out in patients with cerebral infarction, intracerebral hematoma, brain tumor, arteriovenous malformation, and dementia. The HBF values obtained with this method were in excellent agreement with those using the hydrogen bolus method in the same patients. The effects of 5% CO2 inhalation, intravenous infusion of glycerol, and vasodilator drugs on rCBF and rCBV were evaluated and were found useful from diagnostic and therapeutic points of view. “Intracerebral steal” or “intracerebral squeeze” were demonstrated only in patients with space-occupying lesions such as intracerebral hematoma or brain tumor. Cerebral revascularization using a recently developed intracranial bypass procedure for the occluded internal carotid artery was found effective in increasing rCBF in selected cases where the procedure was successful.

Notes: Abstract A pilot study showed that single doses of imipramine (100 mg) produced a maximum reduction in salivation after 3 h which persisted for 72 h after drug. Effects after 3 h were reproducible in 3 subjects and differed from control levels on all 6 occasions of testing. A double-blind study in 6 subjects was then carried out to ascertain whether a dose response measured by salivary flow could be obtained for imipramine and dimethacrin, a developmental drug with fewer anticholinergic effects in animals. A further objective was to study the effects of both drugs on subjective feelings of mood, appetite, and dry mouth in order to make correlations between these effects and the anticholinergic activity. Results showed a linear log-dose response reduction in salivation for imipramine which differed significantly from placebo and dimethacrin. Significant changes on the Clyde Mood Scale in sleepiness and friendliness factors occurred only with imipramine, raising the question of whether there is a causal relationship between the central actions of imipramine and its anticholinergic activity. The significant decrease in friendliness with imipramine as compared to placebo suggests that anticholinergic activity is unlikely to be responsible for antidepressant effect, but may account for the drug's sedative action.

Notes: Summary A case of testicular feminization is described. The patient, brought up as a girl up to the age of three years, then as a boy, suffers from his predominantly female sex characteristics and requests sex reversal. Physical examination: male nuclear sex, inguinal testes with normally developed Leydig cells, predominantly female external genitalia without internal genitalia, hypertrophy of the clitoris, development of mammae at time of puberty, pubic hair of the female type, no facial or axillary hair. Endocrinologic findings: high normal gnoadotrophins, plasma testosterone in the upper normal range for males, slight increase of testosterone after injection of HCG, no increase after ACTH, low normal oestrogene. In cases of testicular feminization with hypertrophy of the clitoris and other signs of masculinization, psycho-sexual problems often arise. Transsexualism has not yet been described even in the incomplete syndrome. Our observation points to the importance of visible signs of intersexuality for the determination of the sex after birth and for the acceptance of the gender role in childhood and adolescence.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Es wird über 2 Fälle von „Trinksucht“ berichtet.
Notes: Summary 2 cases of compulsive drinking are described. Both showed a marked hysterical neurosis with typical conflict situations, which determined manifestation and course of the polydipsia. Apart from the abnormal thirst, from which the patients suffered most, there were numerous other psychosomatic complaints. Experimentally it was possible to reproduce the pathological drinking behavior, the main symptom through acute stress.
