    Notes: Abstract The room temperature tensile properites of a Zr-1.9 wt % Cr alloy have been examined in the beta quenched as well as in tempered conditions and the results have been rationalized in terms of possible hardening mechanisms. The appearance of the fracture surfaces has been correlated to the microstructures developed in the alloy after various heat-treatments.

    Notes: Summary For screening better types among 10 strains with the help of the D 2 statistic, an experiment was conducted in randomized block design with three replications. 10 plants in each plot were randomly selected and observations were recorded on final plant height, heading duration, effective tillers, number of grains per panicle, yield per plant and 100 grain weight. The observations were analyzed and found to be significant at 1% level. In the study of distance relations the contribution of grain number per panicle to D 2 values was found to be maximum. Again, this technique also helped in grouping the 10 strains into four clusters, viz. A, B, C and D, of which B possessed six strains out of 10; A possessed two and C and D one each. Group A comprised 2 selections from the same cross. Group D was composed of a selection from a cross involving Dular and Taichung Native-1 as parents. Group B possessed Dular, two selections from a cross involving Dular as one of the parents, Dharial and N.C.-1626. The constituents of A are expected to be transgressive segregates. Group A was maximally distantly related with D followed in order by C and B. The distance between B and C was small. Group D was found to be the best of all strains studied, followed by B, C and A.

    Notes: Summary Some of the hybrid seeds obtained by interspecific crosses show lack of proper development of seed parts like embryo or endosperm. If such seeds are sown, no plant is usually obtained. However, if the internal details of the seeds are known prior to sowing, embryo culture method may be resorted to for the under-developed seeds and the unfortunate loss of hybrid plants may probably be avoided. The use of X-ray photography was found to be very promising and was employed to assess the internal condition of the hybrid seeds obtained from the interspecific crossing programme, viz, 1. Oryza sativa × O. officinalis, 2. Abelmoschus esculentus × A. moschatus, 3. Lycopersicum esculentum × L. pimpinellifolium and 4. Solanum melongena × S. testiculatum. The special advantages of this technique are, that a. it is possible to know the internal development of F1 seeds without causing any damage to them; b. knowing the condition of the seed, adequate care could be provided to individual seeds as judged by the radiographs; c. it is a very quick and sure method which could be used by the geneticists and breeders in their distant crossing programmes.

    Notes: Abstract We present a study of the inclusive production ofK *(892) and ∑t+-(1385)+cc at 3.6 GeV/c from $$\bar p$$ p interactions. The sensitivity of the exposure is 35.4 events/μb. Longitudinal and transverse momentum distributions are presented. The indirect production ofK s 0 from parentK * and that of Λ's from parent Σ(1385) are studied. The shape of thex distribution of Λ's for $$p\xrightarrow{{\bar p}}\Lambda $$ are calculated from $$p\xrightarrow{p}\Lambda $$ and $$p\xrightarrow{{\pi ^ - }}\Lambda $$ and compared with the experimental distributions. The difference of antiparticle production cross-section ofK s 0 in the central region is compared with the expectation from Mueller-Regge formalism.

    Notes: Abstract The precipitation of ZrCr2, which is a Laves phase with the C15 structure, in a supersaturated, martensitic matrix has been studied in a Zr-1.9 wt % Cr alloy using transmission electron microscopy. The nucleation, morphology and distribution of the precipitates has been examined at different tempering temperatures. The crystallographic orientation relationship between the α-Zr(Cr) and the ZrCr2 phases has been established and the precipitate habit plane determined.

    Notes: The sulfur vulcanization of NR by a MBT-TMTD mixed accelerator system both in the presence and absence of ZnO and stearic acid with or without DCP has been studied. The rate of decomposition of DCP in the presence of both MBT and TMTD is quite similar to that in the MBT system alone. The reduction in crosslinking due to DCP is dependent mainly on MBT. The decomposition product of TMTD may contribute to it only at the later stage of vulcanization. Though TMTD has no influence on the decomposition rate, it reacts with MBT at least in the initial stage of vulcanization and suppresses the retardation caused by MBT on DCP vulcanization in accordance with the free sulfur decrease, the nature of crosslinking formation both in the presence and absence of DCP, and the methyl iodide treatment of the vulcanizates. The vulcanization process of the MBT-TMTD-S-NR system has been interpreted in terms of both free radical and polar mechanisms. The domination of either of these depends on the dominant amount of either MBT or TMTD in the acclerator ratio. According to the initial high rate of crosslink formation, free sulfur decrease and also the initial additiveness of crosslinking in stocks containing DCP, the vulcanization process of MBT-TMTD-ZnO-St. acid-S-NR system has been explained in terms of an ionic mechanism. The pronounced synergistic nature of such systems has been interpreted by the enhanced activation of MBT-S-ZnO-St. acid complex due to the dithiodicarbamate ion formed in the initial stages of vulcanization, and also by the activation of TMTD accelerated vulcanization due to the mercaptobenzothiazylion.

    Notes: Diphenylguanidine acceleration of sulfuration of natural rubber both in the presence and absence of dicumyl peroxide (DCP) has been studied. DPG enhances the rate of decomposition of DCP, and the crosslinking maxima due to DCP are lowered by DPG to some extent, which increases with the concentration up to a limiting value. The rate of sulfur decrease is very high and is dependent on DPG concentration but practically independent of the presence of ZnO and stearic acid. It is observed that with constant level of DCP and sulfur, crosslinking increases with the increase of DPG concentration and finally becomes additive when the molar proportion of DPG: S8 approximately equals 1:1. In presence of ZnO and stearic acid, with each increment of DCP concentration crosslinking is retarded for both systems. Mechanisms have been suggested in terms of polar and radical process.
