    A nonlinear analysis of the moon's physical libration in longitude (1971)

    Notes: Abstract The Euler equations for the forced physical librations of the Moon have already been solved by using a digital computer to perform the semi-literal mathematical manipulations. Very near resonance, the computer solution for the physical libration in longitude is complemented by the solution of the appropriate Duffing equation with a dissipation term. Because of its apparent proximity to a resonant frequency, the term whose argument is 2ω - twice the mean angular distance of the Moon's perigee from the ascending node of its orbit - is especially important. Its phase, which soon should be measurable, is related to the Moon's anelasticity. The term's frequency, in units of the sidereal month, increases as the semi-major axis of the Moon's orbit about the Earth increases. Using the Moon's mechanical ellipticity of Koziel and the rate of increase of the semi-major axis of MacDonald, it is estimated that the 2ω term will cross the resonant frequency in 130 million years and, if the rate of energy dissipation is sufficiently low, a transient libration will be induced.

    Description / Table of Contents: Summary Sera of 500 pregnant women were screened for irregular complement fixing antibodies against blood platelets immediately before delivery. Screening studies were performed using the micro-complement fixation technique (MCFix) with platelets and the micro-lymphocytotoxicity test. In complement fixation with platelets 18 antisera (3,6%) were found compared to 43 sera with cytotoxic antibodies.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung 500 schwangere Frauen wurden kurz vor der Entbindung auf das Vorliegen irregulärer, C'-fixierender antithrombozytärer Antikörper im Serum untersucht. Mit Hilfe der Plättchen-Mikro-Komplement-Bindungs-Reaktion wurden 18 positive Seren (3,6%) gefunden. Die parallel durchgeführte Suchreaktion mit der Mikro-Lymphozyten-Toxizitäts-Reaktion ergab in 43 Fällen (8,6%) positive Reaktionen. Alle 18 C'-fixierenden Antiseren hatten auch cytotoxische Aktivität. Plättchenspezifische Alloantikörper wurden nicht nachgewiesen. Monospezifität wurde bei 13 von 18 C'-fixierenden Antiseren in der Mikro-Komplement-Bindungs-Reaktion festgestellt (achtmal Anti-HL-A 2, zweimal Anti-HL-A 5, einmal Anti-HL-A 7, einmal Anti-FJH und einmal Anti-HL-A 12). Die fünf polyspezifischen Seren enthielten zweimal Anti-HL-A 7 und einmal Anti-HL-A 1. In zwei polyspezifischen Seren konnte die Antikörperspezifität ohne Absorptions-und Elutionsuntersuchungen nicht ermittelt werden. Die Ergebnisse der Untersuchungen in der Mikro-Komplement-Bindungs-Reaktion mit Plättchen wurden mit den entsprechenden Ergebnissen der Mikro-Lymphozytotoxizität verglichen.

    Description / Table of Contents: Summary Absorption and elution studies with blood platelets were performed with 13 HL-A-specific sera from pregnant women. It was possible to isolate 8 monospecific and 4 cross-reacting HL-A-specific antibodies in the eluates, thus being able to type for 9 HL-A-antigens (1,2,5,7,13, Ba*, BB, LND and SL) in micro-complement fixation with platelets. It is emphasized that antibody concentration in eluates permits the production of strong, complement fixing sera even against HL-A-antigens with low frequency. Cross reactivity within the HL-A-system renders the elution of monospecific antisera difficult. In this study the following cross reactions between HL-A-antigens were found: HL-A2+Ba*, HL-A7+BB, HL-A7+BB+LND and HL-A13+BB. Based on these results the question of “monospecificity” of HL-A-antisera is discussed.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Eingehende Absorptions-und Elutionsuntersuchungen mit Thrombozyten wurden an 13 HL-A-spezifischen Seren von schwangeren Frauen durchgeführt. Es wurden auf diese Wiese 8 monospezifische und 4 kreuzreagierende HL-A-spezifische Eluate gewonnen, die die Typisierung von insgesamt 9 HL-A-Antigenen (1,2,5,7,13, Ba*, BB, LND und SL) in der Mikro-Komplement-Bindungs-Reaktion mit Plättchen erlaubten. Auf die Möglichkeit, durch Anreicherung HL-A-spezificher Antikörper in den Eluaten ausreichend starke, C'-fixierende Antiseren auch gegen seltene HL-A-Antigene zu gewinnen, wird hingewiesen. Das häufige Auftreten kreuzreagierender Antikörper erschwert die Hertstellung monospezifischer HL-A-spezifischer Eluate. In den vorliegenden Untersuchungen wurden folgende Kreuzreaktionen innerhalb des HL-A-Systems gefunden: HL-A2 +Ba*, HL-A7+BB, HL-A7+BB+LND und HL-A13+BB Die Frage der “Monospezifität” HL-A-spezifischer Antikörper wird diskutiert.

    Notes: Abstract The DNA of Rhynchosciara hollaenderi was examined using isopycnic centrifugation in neutral CsCl. Two low density minor bands (collectively termed satellite DNA) were detected in addition to the main band DNA. Main band DNA has a buoyant density of 1.695 g/cm3. The larger of the two minor bands has a buoyant density of 1.680 g/cm3 while the smaller of the two minor bands has a buoyant density of about 1.675 g/cm3. Thermal denaturation studies have confirmed the presence of the two minor classes of DNA.—The satellite and main band DNAs were isolated in relatively pure form and were transcribed in vitro using DNA-dependent RNA polymerase from Escherichia coli. Annealing of the two complementary RNAs (cRNAs) with main band and satellite DNA was examined using filter hybridization techniques.—The chromosomal distribution of the satellite DNA was determined by in situ molecular hybridization of satellite-cRNA with Rhynchosciara salivary gland chromosomes. Satellite-cRNA hybridized with the centromeric heterochromatin of each of the four chromosomes (A, B, C, and X) and with certain densely staining bands in the telomere regions of the A and C chromosomes. Main band-cRNA annealed with many loci scattered throughout the chromosomes including areas containing satellite DNA.
