Notizen: The Islamic poetic tradition as it came to the Turks through Persian is characterized by a rather limited catalog of basic themes expressed by an equally limited number of standard tropes. The basic themes are usually quite easily recognizable (e.g. the sâkî theme, the bahâr theme, etc.), even though more than one basic theme may be included in a single poem. The standard tropes — for example, the moon for the face of the beloved, rubies for wine, drunkenness for mystical love — are also used over and over again without any serious attempt to freshen poetic expression by discarding them for new metaphores. Nevertheless, within this atmosphere of apparent similarity, contemporary critics placed high value on creativity, uniqueness, and the invention of ‘new’ fancies. Modern scholarship has, in most cases, attempted to resolve this paradox by stating that ‘creativity’ for the Ottoman poet consisted of rearranging and recombining traditional themes and tropes to create new patterns and, thereby, a subtle and precious uniqueness. Moreover, any internal cohesion or organization other than that provided by rhyme and meter is generally seen as fortuitous and unrelated to any conscious effort to present a unified poetic message. The result of this view is the rather pervasive conclusion that the Ottoman poet is no more creative than the child is ‘creative’ who operates a kaleidoscope which produces infinitely varied patterns, even though the mirrors (themes?) and colored bits of glass (tropes?) remain ever the same.

Notizen: Summary The foraging ecology of two ant species inhabiting the same area in the Chihuahuan desert was investigated by study of conditions and magnitude of forager activity, estimation of forager population numbers, determination of critical maximum and minimum temperatures, and observation of foraging behavior. The foraging activity ofFormica perpilosa was relatively independent of soil temperature and saturation deficits probably because of their ability to lose water without detriment and the fact that they forage in plants. Foraging activity inTrachymyrmex smithi neomexicanus ceased at saturation deficits greater than 35 gms/m3 and soil surface temperatures greater than 50 °C. The mean critical thermal maxima and minima inF. perpilosa were 45.2 °C and 5.2 °C and inT. s. neomexicanus were 36.7 °C and 9.7 °C. The estimated forager population size inF. perpilosa ranged from 2,000 to 3,500 per colony. We estimated that the average forager population size inT. s. neomexicanus was about one half that ofF. perpilosa. F. perpilosa forage on both honey dew and insects.T. s. neomexicanus forage on leaf litter, and appear to exhibit a seasonal change in forage preference.

Notizen: Summary The influence of nitrite and nitrate on chlorophyll fluorescence, a very sensitive indicator for the redox state of the primary acceptor of photosystem II of photosynthesis, was studied in green algae (several species of Chlorella, and Ankistrodesmus braunii). In phosphate solution under an atmosphere of nitrogen (i.e., in the absence of O2 and CO2, and without nitrite or nitrate), fluorescence shows a pronounced induction and then rises to a high steady-state level. In the presence of nitrite, however, fluorescence decreases after a rather short induction peak to a much lower steady-state. Nitrate, on the other hand, does not have any influence on either induction or steady-state of fluorescence. These results clearly demonstrate that nitrite reduction in the light is very closely coupled to the photosynthetic electron transport system, whereas nitrate is not reduced photosynthetically in vivo.

Notizen: Summary By reinterpretation of the tooth formula ofOrnithorhynchus as dp/P M1–4 a synapomorphy with Marsupials has been discovered. Monotremes and Marsupials are sister groups, together derived from Theria of the Middle-Crelaceous.
