Notes: Examination of the trap catches of barley mildew spores at Hatching Green (1971), Wellesbourne (1970 and 1971) and Paddington (1961–1970), and analysis with respect to meteorological data, indicate an increase of catch with wind strength in the vicinity of the sources; at greater distances strong winds will decrease the catch. Spore catches increase rapidly with day maximum temperatures above about 19°C (66°F) but reach a maximum in the vicinity of 24°C (75°F). The effect of an adjacent winter barley crop is discussed.

Notes: Since the season of summer hay fever may last only 4 weeks and rainfall may produce days with virtually no airborne pollen, the timing of clinical trials is important. To facilitate this a method of forecasting the first possible 100% symptom day, and the severity of the season in terms of light, moderate or severe, is presented. The forecast is based on temperature in April and May, and formulae tested by reference to records of grass pollen concentrations over Central London during 1961–70.

Notes: Abstract Starry flounder (Platichthys stellatus Pallas) were fitted with masks for measurements of ventilation volume and post-gill oxygen tensions, and with arterial and venous cannulae. They were then subjected to periods of low oxygen levels and high temperature. Pre- and post-gill oxygen tension, blood oxygen tension and content, oxygen uptake, and ventilation volume were measured. Effectiveness of gas exchange across the gills, cardiac output, and transfer factor were calculated. A series of blood-oxygen dissociation curves were also constructed at two pH's and temperatures. The data suggest that flounder are able to regulate oxygen uptake down to an environmental oxygen tension of at least 50 mm Hg by increasing ventilation volume and transfer factor while not changing blood flow rate or pattern. Also, the flounder's response to temperature increase is similar to the expected response to exercise, with the exception of an increase in gill diffusion resistance.
