    Notes: Abstract The rates of release of salivary amylase and esterase from normal and polyoma virus infected mouse submandibular glands were measured in a continuous flow perifusion system. Following stimulation by epinephrine, the rate of release of esterase by the infected glands was significantly greater than that from control glands. The rate of amylase release, while greater from infected glands, was not significantly different. The total enzyme contents from infected and control tissues were similar. Cyclic GMP was found to be higher in the infected glands than the control glands, suggesting one possible mechanism for the higher rates of enzyme release by infected tissues.

    Notes: Phytic acid and nine elements (potassium, magnesium, calcium, sodium, iron, zinc, manganese, phosphorus, and copper) were determined in 12 commercially available cultivars of hexaploid triticales, one octaploid triticale, one wheat and one rye. The amount of phytate phosphorus varied from 1.4–5.3 mg/g in the whole grain, from 0.5–1.9 mg/g in flours and from 0.6–2.2 mg/g in bran of triticales. There were significant variations in the amount of calcium, phosphorus, iron and zinc but not in potassium, magnesium, sodium, manganese or copper due to cultivars. The location had more pronounced effect on micro-elements (manganese, iron, copper and zinc) than on the macro-elements (potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, calcium and sodium). The predominant minerals of triticales were phosphorus, potassium, magnesium and calcium. Phytic acid does not seem to have an apparent correlation with either iron or phosphorus in triticales.

    Notes: Summary In urethane-anaesthetised adult albino rats ventral surface of the brainstem was stimulated chemically by increasing the local CO2 concentration and electrically. Two areas were demarcated on the ventral surface of the brainstem, one which showed an increase in pulmonary ventilation on chemical and electrical stimulation, and another which showed a decrease in pulmonary ventilation and sometimes even respiratory arrest. EEG activity recorded from the area from where increased pulmonary ventilation was obtained showed a synchronous slow wave activity during chemical stimulation and inhalation of a CO2-air mixture. This area is situated 0.5–1 mm lateral to the mid-line extending up to the rootlets of the VIIth to IXth cranial nerves. The response increased proportionately on increasing the strength of the chemical stimulus, till it reached a plateau. In carotid body denervated and chronic hypoxic animals, the magnitude of the responses was shown to be increased, probably due to increased sensitivity of the central chemosensitive mechanisms.

    Notes: Abstract Blood flow to the testis, measured by the133-Xenon isotope clearance technique, initially increased after rams were exposed to elevated (32°C) temperature. However, after 5 and 7 days continuous exposure, blood flow decreased significantly. Similar changes in blood flow to the testis were found during whole body exposure to elevated temperature, or when the temperature of the testis was increased by scrotal heating. After one week of heating the wall of the spermatic artery in the middle region of the pampiniform plexus had thickened, and the arterial lumen had decreased significantly. The PGF 2α content in the testis of rams exposed to elevated temperature increased significantly. It is tentatively postulated that the higher levels of PGF 2α in the testis of rams exposed to elevated temperature may be responsible for impaired spermatogenic function by constricting the spermatic artery in the pampiniform plexus region and thereby reducing blood flow to the testis.

    Notes: Abstract A study was conducted to determine the influence of temperature on solubility and subsequent availability of P to plants. Phosphorus sorption curves were used to fertilize the soil with six P rates corresponding to initial sorption equilibrium solution P levels in the range of 0.03 to 0.72 ppm. Yield response to P measured for temperatures was in controlled environment chambers. Growth temperatures ranged 12.7°C to 29.4°C. Sorption of added P and desorption of sorbed P increased with increase in temperature. Yields of lettuce increased with the increased sorption equilibrium solution P levels at all the temperatures. Initial sorption-equilibrium solution P levels necessary for 95% yield had to be increased from 0.20 to 0.64 ppm when temperature was lowered from 29.4° C to 12.7°C. Desorption-equilibrium solution P levels for 95% yield were nearly constant at all temperatures. The log of initial sorption equilibrium solution P as a function of temperature for 95% yield was linear between 17.2°C and 29.4°C. Comparison of the data for 95% yield in solution cultures showed that critical nutrient solution P levels were very close to the desorption equilibrium P levels for 95% yield of plants grown in soil at similar temperatures. Relative yields of lettuce and desorption equilibrium solution P levels showed the same trend to changes in temperature. The study suggests that the major role of temperature on P uptake between 17.2°C and 29.4°C is due to desorption of P from the soil. Physiological influences of temperature on plant growth and consequent P requirement play a minor role.

    Notes: Summary While monitoring the changes in mineral N status during incubation, it was observed that the magnitude and rate of N mineralization directly depended on organic C and total N contents in the alkaline soils. Nitrogen mineralization started since the beginning of incubation in all except the Hansi and Karnal soils which showed a lag of seven days. Since these two soils were of high electrical conductivity (EC) and gypsum requirement (GR), and N mineralization in them started immediately after the amendment with gypsum, it was concluded that the lag was due to the depressive effects of high amount of toxic salts on microorganisms involved in N mineralization. The gypsum-amended soil samples released more NH4-N and NO3-N than the unamended ones. Beneficial effects of gypsum on N mineralization in the soils was thought to be due to stimulation of microorganisms and/or neutralization of toxic salts thereby creation of a favourable habitat for them.
