Notes: Abstract The kinetics of aqueous polymerization of acrylamide and methacrylamide initiated by potassium peroxydiphosphate has been investigated. The kinetic orders with respect to peroxydiphosphate and monomer were close to 0.5 and 1 respectively. Overall activation energies were computed and a suitable kinetic scheme suggested. Comparison with kinetic studies of the analogous acrylamide polymerization by peroxydisulphate shed doubt on the cage effect interpretation of the complex order with respect to monomer.

Notes: Abstract Polymerization of acrylonitrile was investigated using ceric ion-organic sulfur compounds reducing agent systems. The organic sulphur compounds used as the reductants are, thiourea, thioacetamide, 2-amino ethanethiol, cysteine, and thioglycolic acid. The rates of polymerization were measured within the temperature range of 25 to 40 °C. The initiation was by the radical produced from Ce4+-sulphur compounds reaction. The rate of monomer disappearance was proportional to [M]1.5, [S]0.5 and the rate of ceric disappearance was directly proportional to [S] and [Ce4+]. A kinetic scheme involving the initiation by the primary radical and termination of the growing polymer radicals by the mutual type has been suggested and the kinetic percentage have been evaluated.

Notes: Abstract Intrinsic viscosity measurements were carried out on poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) and poly(vinyl alcohol) in various solvents and solvent mixtures. The values ofφ, [η] andk, the latter two being the fundamental terms in the equationC/η sp =1/ηkC, were utilized for the determination of the unperturbed dimensions in solution. The values of (¯r o 2 /M w )1/2 were calculated.

Notes: Abstract The kinetics of the aqueous polymerization of acrylonitrile and methyl methacrylate initiated by the peroxydiphosphate-thioglycollic acid redox system was investigated at 40, 45, 50, 55, and 60 °C. The rates of polymerization were measured at different concentrations of oxidant, activator and monomer. From the results, it was concluded that the polymerization reaction is initiated by an organic free radical arising from the peroxydiphosphate-thioglycollic acid system and termination by mutual type. On the basis of experimental observations of the dependence of the rate of polymerization,R p on various variables, a suitable kinetic scheme has been proposed.

Notes: A large number of resins have been synthesized by reacting cardanol, a constituent of cashewnut shell liquid, with formaldehyde and substituted aromatic compounds in the presence of acidic and basic catalysts. The resins have been characterized by IR spectra. They were shown to be selective ion exchangers for certain metal ions. A batch equilibrium method was used for studying the selectivity of the metal ions. The thermal behaviour of the resins has been studied and a plausible degradation mechanism has been suggested.

Notes: The radiation-induced graft copolymerization of methyl methacrylate onto nylon fibers was investigated at room temperature. The homopolymer was separated by soxhlet extraction. The graft yield increases with increase of dose rate from 0.1768 to 0.7072 Mrad. The percentage of grafting increase with increasing monomer concentration. Addition of copper sulphate and a non-ionic surfactant, sodium lauryl sulphate, supresses the formation of homopolymer. The value of Gb, the number of branches per 100 eV of energy absorbed in the substrate polymer, and the value of α, the fraction of substrate polymer grafted, have been computed. A kinetic scheme has been suggested.

Notes: Kinetics of vinyl polymerization of acrylonitrile initiated by the redox system tartaric acid-V5+ have been investigated in aqueous sulfuric acid in the temperature range 30-40°C. The rates of polymerization and V5+ disappearance and the chain lengths of polyacrylonitrile were measured. From the results it is concluded that the polymerization reaction is initiated by an organic free radical arising from the V5+-tartaric acid reaction with termination by V5+ ions. A suitable kinetic scheme has been proposed, and the various rate and energy parameters were evaluated.
