Notes: In the first part of this study, the microstructures and the mechanical properties of precious, semi-precious, and nonprecious dental casting alloys for the porcelainbaked- to-metal technique have been determined. The semi-precious alloys contained only 50 % gold, and palladium, silver, and some base metals. The nonprecious alloys were of the nickel-chromium type. Discs and miniaturized tensile bars have been cast and tested either in the as cast condition, or after a simulation of the various porcelain bakes. Proof stress, ultimate tensile strength, elongation, and plastic stiffness have been measured and results compared by use of analyses of variance. The microstructure examination shows that the simulation of the porcelain bakes improves the homogeneity of the precious and semi-precious alloys. Simultaneously, the mechanical properties of the same alloys are also improved. One semi-precious alloy, still under development at the time of these tests, has its mechanical characteristics markedly dovv'ngraded by the thermal treatments. The nickel-chromium alloys exhibit the best range of mechanical properties for the porcelain-baked-to-metal technique, when considering the three most relevant properties: proof stress, plastic stiffness, and modulus of elasticity.

Notes: Abstract Superconducting simple cubic Te100−x Au x films (10〈x〈90) were produced by He+-irradiation at low temperatures as well as at room temperature. After low temperature irradiation the as-irradiated disordered samples forx〈60 at % Au are in a semiconducting state which becomes unstable at about 230 K, and then transform into the s.c. superconducting phase. The resistivity of the s.c. phase displays a negative temperature coefficient for residual resistivity values larger than 100 μΩ cm. In comparison to “splat cooled” foils, the s.c. Te—Au phase in the He+-irradiated films is more homogeneous. The observed variation of the transition temperature to the superconducting state with Au content is explained as an interaction of the Fermi-surface with several Bragg-planes.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung In einer 12-monatigen Periode wurden 110 Patienten (102 Männer, 8 Frauen) mit einer Frühmortalität von 4,5 % operiert. Zusatzeingriffe: 3 mal Klappenersatz, 7 mal Aneurysmektomie.
Notes: Summary During a twelve-month period, 110 consecutive patients (102 men, 8 woman) with chronic stable angina were operated upon. Early mortality was 4.5 % in this specific series. Concomitant valve replacement and left-ventricular aneurysmectomy were performed in three (2 AVR, 1 MVR) and seven patients respectively. Of all survivors, 88 % were free of angina within a 4-month follow-up period. Bypass occlusion, congestive heart failure, and diffuse sclerosis were primarily responsible for unsuccessful operative results.

Notes: Abstract We have investigated the current-induced step-like structure in theV−T andV−I characteristics of tin whiskers with a mean free pathl for the electrons which is reduced by indium impurities (up to 3.6 at %). The extrapolation of theV−I characteristics beyond the first voltage step shows a zero-voltage interceptI 0≈0.5I c (I c=critical current). From the differential resistance beyond the first voltage step a lengthL An1 can be obtained which is proportional tol 1/2. These results can be understood by assuming phase-slip centers in the whisker which carry a time-averaged supercurrent of approximately 0.5I c above the critical current, and at which a voltage is developed by the “healing” of nonequilibrium quasiparticles.

Notes: Summary An improved and short method is described for the isolation of intact eosinophilic leukocytes from horse blood with high yield (1–1.5 g/20 1). Viability and purity of the preparations were verified by light and electron microscopy and by the trypan blue exclusion test. Isolated eosinophils were 98–100% pure, intact and viable, and they could be shown to phagocytise immune-complexes.

Notes: Summary A thermodynamic analysis has been made of the secondary transition stage in the spontaneous precipitation of calcium phosphate following the amorphous-crystalline transformation. The first formed crystalline material has a solubility similar to that of octacalcium phosphate (OCP) and the computed thermodynamic solubility product remains invariant in the pH range 7.00–8.60. The duration of the secondary stage is sensitive to pH and the transition appears to occur by hydrolysis of the first formed OCP-like phase to a more basic apatitic phase with a tricalcium phosphate (TCP) stoichiometry. The crystalline material at the end of this transition has an invariant solubility product, in the pH range 7.00 to 8.60, when the TCP-like molecular formula is assumed. Changes in the solution chemistry which accompany the solid-tosolid transitions are consistent with the above conclusions. The results of this study are also consistent with those of a previous study which suggest that the stability of the amorphous calcium phosphate phase is dependent upon the instability of the solution phase with respect to OCP formation.

Notes: Summary A thermodynamic analysis of the precipitation of amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) and its transformation to crystalline apatite has been made. A nearly constant ion product, over a wide variety of conditions, was obtained for a tricalcium phosphate (TCP)-like phase suggesting that the molecular unit which governs the solubility of ACP may be similar in composition to TCP. The introduction of 10% acid phosphate into the formula for the TCP ion product improves the fit of experimental data and results in an invariant ion product. The stability of ACP in solution was found to be dependent upon its thermodynamic instability with respect to an octacalcium phosphate (OCP)-like phase. The dependence of the induction period for the amorphous to crystalline transformation upon the pH and the Ca/P ratio of the solution is best explained by the assumption that an OCP-like phase is initially nucleated on the surfaces of the ACP particles. The events that occur in the immediate post-transition period suggest the hydrolysis of this OCP-like material to an apatitic phase.

Notes: Summary A method is described for determination of the titratable hydroxide ion in calcium phosphate precipitates. The procedure requires accurate analysis of the other titratable species in the crystal lattice but is unaffected by the presence of other lattice constituents or impurities. The method was applied to precipitates that had been previously analyzed by solution thermodynamic techniques, and the results were consistent with the earlier observations. The hydroxide content of the precipitates increased with crystal maturity and with increasing pH of the precipitation medium. The hydroxide content of the amorphous phase and the immediate post-amorphous-crystalline transformation phase was shown to be nearly zero. After 3 to 4 days' maturation, the hydroxide content of precipitates prepared at pH values of 7, 8, and 9 was shown to increase to approximately 23, 40, 56% of that required for pure hydroxyapatite.
