Notes: Recent studies have indicated that males make more egotistical attributions than females, that is, males make more internal attributions for success and more external attributions for failure than females do. These sex differences in attributions were examined in terms of male/female differences in expectancies for success and ego-involvement in the tasks. Male and female subjects succeeded or failed on a masculine or a feminine task. It was found that males made more egotistical attributions than females on the masculine task, but females made more egotistical attributions than males on the feminine task. A covariance analysis revealed that these sex differences in attributions could be explained in terms of the differences between the males and females in expectancy for success and in ego-involvement. Finally, it was found that ego-involvement was a more important determinant of egotisical attributions in the present study than was expectancy.

Notes: Summary In a desert area with abundant annual plants the largest feeding guild was gramnivores (nine species). In an area with few annual plants, the largest feeding guild was omnivores (eight species). Within a guild there is little overlap in body length of workers. Species in which there was overlap in body length of workers exhibited marked differences in diel and seasonal activity. Variation in precipitation and productivity between years resulted in differences in seasonal activity, hence considerable variation in the structure of the ant community through time.

Notes: Abstract Previous research has shown that rats develop a conditioned taste aversion after a single pairing of a distinct taste and subsequent toxicosis. The experiments reported here test the hypothesis that the expression of a taste aversion may reflect classically conditioned nausea mediated by activation of brainstem emetic centers by taste stimuli. Rats were allowed to drink a saccharin solution (1 g/l) and 10 min later were intubated with LiCl (180 mg/kg) to produce nausea. When control rats were posttested for saccharin preference they consumed less than 50% of their pretest intake. Experimental rats were injected with one of four pharmacologically distinct antiemetic drugs 30 min prior to their posttest with saccharin. Each drug significantly attenuated the aversion to saccharin at one dose level. The antiemetic drugs we used were scopolamine HBr, cyclizine, prochlorperazine dimaleate, and trimethobenzamide. These drugs had no effect on the conditioned fear of a noise that signaled foot shock or on a natural aversion to a bitter fluid (quinine monohydrochloride, 100 mg/l). Our data suggest that pharmacological suppression of the neural mechanisms of emesis selectively disrupts conditioned taste aversions, and that moderate dose levels are critical for obtaining this effect.

Notes: Waste water purification at BASF, Ludwigshafen/Rh. The manifold problems encountered in the field of waste water treatment in the chemical industry are considered, together with the tasks involved, possible solutions, and costs incurred, for the example of BASF AG in Ludwigshafen. This example is particularly interesting because it shows how the waste water problems of a chemical factory that has been in existence for over a centurvey could be solved in the course of a ten-year plan. Twenty years after the inception of this plan, costs and success can now be quantified.

Notes: 17O-NMR spectroscopy has found limited application as a structural probe due to the experimental problems associated with a quadrupolar nucleus having low natural abundance. A survey of data obtained from systematic studies of structurally related compounds shows, however, that large chemical shift differences are usually obtained for structurally nonequivalent nuclei, and that characteristic chemical shift values are observed for specific chemical environments. The present day availability of 17O enriched materials and Fourier transform NMR instrumentation should allow extensive application of the 17O-NMR technique to structural problems in the immediate future.
