Description / Table of Contents:
On the Rearrangement of Bromocyclopropyl Carbinols to Homoallylic Derivatives and to CyclobutanonesThe cyclopropyl carbinols 1-6 rearrange to the vinyl bromides 7-15 and the enol tosylate 16, respectively, upon acid treatment. At least formally, these reactions occur through intermediate homoallylic cations 18. The structures of the products are mainly deduced from NMR data. Under appropriate conditions (Table 1 ) these conversions occur in good to high yields and increase the usefulness of the coupling process between dibromocyclopropanes and carbonyl compounds to bromohydrins of type 20. - The stereochemical course of another reaction of these bromohydrines, their previously described ring enlargement to cyclobutanones 22, is studied. It turns out that, as in the cycloadditions of ketenes to olefinic double bonds, the cyclobutanones 23, 24, 27, and 28b with the larger substituents at C-2 and C--3 in the cis-position are formed in excess. A mechanistic proposal accounting for this stereoselectivity is made (29a → 31 → 32 → 23b, 24b, 25 or a corresponding concerted process).
Notes:
